I awakened today to hear that there are rumblings that the US is going to eliminate the nickel, just like I (among others) predicted was going to happen soon after eliminating the production of the penny. The stated reason is that it costs more to make than the 5 cents it is supposedly worth.
My complaint when the GENIUS Act was passed was that it was a fast step toward digital currency. Not digital money; there's no such thing. Digital currency is what can be programmed, with no direct input of the user.

You are right on the money. We all need to pay attention. I deposited a 6 figure check to my bank. They said the funds will not be available for 9 days, fairly standard. But as often it happens the funds are available sooner. In this case they were made available the next day. So I went into the bank and drew a 6 figure cashiers check and a substantial amount of cash. Mind you, they gave me the check and the cash. In essence they were saying yup, the money is in your account and we are meeting your bank needs. The next day they overdrew my account by 60k. I complained with the logic of their own behavior (hey you gave me the money so it must have been in my account) and upon complaint they were silent. They didn't know anything. I went to corporate and they knew nothing. I have been doing business with the bank for 50 plus years; BTW it is the largest bank in the country. There was no explanation given leading me to believe it was an AI attack. The situation resolved itself in 9 days but what mess. So be aware that these issues are coming to a town near you.

Thank you for raising the inhumane treatment meted out on Francesca Albanese. This was simply on a whim without trial. This treatment for speaking out on Israeli atrocities in Gaza. It has apparently been for her anti-semitic hate speech which is not tolerated in the US. It is likened to racism and criticism of the LGBTQ people. But six figure checks blitz through the clearing process, so it was puzzling and a bit troubling. What can one do? The idea that I can be told what legal goods and services I can spend my money on is beyond troubling...
Well, through personal experience I believe the AI issue in the banking system is a real threat and here now. But I also have great faith in America ingenuity to find one alternative after another to circumvent government interventions into our banking system. And if you wonder why there are continuous attacks on are second amendment, well wonder no more.
