Well to be sure I know, and have known, many, many students, as former university professor. To be sure there are many students who fit your description. They do their jobs well. But that demographic has lost traction to the new vociferous and morally outraged student for which the main goal of their educatiion is to enact social change in their own image. Now the social media algorithms are driven by these extreme positions that are useful to them because they drive engagement- often using outrage for politics. I wonder if social media has done more damage. When TV was the main media everyone was focussed on the same programs and so had a similar consensus. With social media the consensus fragments into millions of different channels with competing ideas and people's attention is focussed by content designed to be emotionally triggering click-bait/rage-bait.

I think multiculturalism can either be virtuous or deleterious. I've noticed that past immigration policies, when formalized, would arrive at numbers of allowable immigration from identifiable nations and ethnicities. Fair enough, the outgrowth of any admission policy should be supportive of assimilation. Does anyone really think that what we saw under Biden was that? I guess previously a newsletter would be a sort of outsider media that had to be extreme to get attention. Now the social media algorithms are driven by these extreme positions that are useful to them because they drive engagement- often using outrage for politics. Social media adds to this by amplifying it and pushing users into increasingly extreme views. There’s a book called ‘Chaos Machine’ that describes it.
Outrage means clicks and is good for business.
Yes a lot of BPR is social media in microcosm- content meant to appeal to the emotions and press people’s buttons so they can vent at their perceived enemies. Of course, this pushes aside truth and balancing difficult trade offs which is of course far more boring, but what one wants from a macroeconomics newsletter.

Sticking to economic argument, one of the better ways to halt the slide of affordable living is to fight inflation and grow the economy. To grow we need productivity growth. To get this we must invest in our labor pool. With regard to immigration policy, this points to admission based on merit. Merit as defined by critical shortages wherever they crop up. Could be agricultural labor or data engineers. Regardless, it is revenue generating jobs growth.
But we need to have control over our immigration policy and overly emotional hand-wringing over some poor, yet uneducated and perhaps hostile stranger, isn't that at all.
Trump bashing is all the rage on the Left, but simply juxtaposing the unrestricted hordes that Biden allowed to pour into the nation, versus Trumps efforts at planning to reshore and develop vital industry, is the real tell.

One mother, in dealing with her grief at having lost her child resorted to attempting the theft of another woman's child. Solomon saw through her scheme.
