Well, the decoupling of the paper money from its anchor created the ponzi scam. Then the drop in the birthrate exacerbated the effects of ponzi scheme, and the result has been the rise in socialism in our young, primarily the young college educated population who are well versed in pronouns but confused by protons and proteins. To this cauldron of toxic spirits add the immigrant ingredient who are less interested in assimilation and more interested in taking advantage of governmental programs designed to be safety nets but in reality are used as lifestyle enhancements. Take the Somali population in Minnesota 80% of whom are on welfare and are second generation, and where the local and state government trade fraud for votes with impunity. Yup American politics, over time, has set the stage for socialism and it is coming hard and fast.

And to think a few tweaks way back when -- foremost balanced budgets, term limits, letting the flag follow trade -- would have led to a far better outcome than what appears to be an array of impending financial collapses and all the chaos they will entail.

It's not as if smart people didn't propose solutions, and even implement some.

Reagan's 1981 commission on social security made several improvements but not enough to overcome the demographic phenomenon of ever fewer workers paying FICA tax to support an ever growing number of retired beneficiaries.

And Obama's Simpson-Bowls Commission proposed in 2010 a number of ways to reduce the federal budget deficit and to stabilize the national debt, but none were adopted by Congress.

Reminds me of Pogo's revelation: "We have met the enemy; it is us."
