I can't completely blame the US for expanding their overseas empire. After all, they learned it from the worst: The Brits and the Latinos (oops ... Romans).

Britain built the global sea lanes, trading system, financial networks, naval infrastructure and spread of English. After 1945, America inherited that architecture and improved the model: fewer colonies, more bases, alliances, military guarantees, dollars and cultural influence.
Britain had to govern India. America got much of the same strategic benefit through sovereign allies, without the administration headache.
America didn’t invent an unprecedented empire. It inherited Britain’s dominant Western system, removed most territorial ownership and scaled it up.
