I write to correct you, Joel. Not about GDP; after all the G is for Gross and I'm averse to grossness. The correction, if I'm right is for crediting Perry Como with bringing "Some Enchanted Evening" to us in 1949. I was alive and kicking then and I believe it was the great Italian bass Ezio Pinza who made it a hit in "South Pacific" by Rogers and Hammerstein. No doubt Perry jumped on the bandwagon pretty soon after.

It is rare to find error in your writings, Joel. You are just a little too kind to "Brandon" for my money but that's just me.

You are indeed correct, Mr. Harrison. Pinza sang the original on Broadway in April of '49. Como took it to #1 on the Billboard charts later that same year. The Sinatra - Clooney duet is a worthwhile mention, too. Thanks for the refresher... and for sending me down a Rogers and Hammerstein youtube rabbit hole. Always a welcome distraction.

Thanks for the comments and kind words, folks. The Asado, by the way, was fantastic... as was the bonarda! If you happen to find yourself in Argentina sometime, you can pick up a perfectly acceptable bottle at any local store for ~US$10. As for meat, prices are rising here (even adjusted for the favorable, unofficial dollar-peso exchange rate) but they're still a fraction of what one pays in the US, Oz, Europe and the rest of the developed world. Today's lunch for two (father and daughter) ran us about $12 - empanadas, milanesa, asado de tira, sides, two sparkling waters, one coffee, inc. taxes and grateful tip. Cheers!

Great piece Joel! Reference to the Mises Institute and quotes from Frank Shostak and the late great Murray Rothbard!!! I'm a long time contributor and supporter of the Mises Institute so this is music to my ears. Rothbard was truly a remarkable individual. World Class Economist, Historian, Philosopher, prolific writer and lecturer. Rothbard was an Enemy of the State long before it became fashionable. "Man, Economy, and State, with Power and Market," "Conceived in Liberty," "For a New Liberty: The Libertarian Manifesto," "What Has Government Done to Our Money" are just a few examples of this man's brilliance. The Statists had absolutely no answers for Rothbard. Intellectually they couldn't carry his water. It was so much fun watching them try :-) Needless to say, I'm a card carrying Anarcho-Capitalist and Murray Rothbard is front and center on my personal Mount Rushmore.

"Humans are hardwired to be selfish, jealous, carnivorous, covetous and violent." Agree. So with this axiom in place, let's give a government run by Humans a monopoly on coercion and violence. What could possible go wrong :-) We've witnessed the abysmal failure of centralized government and their planning fiascos yet we never question the underlying theory. We can thank Statolatry for creating a nation/world of unquestioning Statist dolts. We should never lose sight of the most important of all axioms; bad theory produces bad results. You hire a serial child molester to watch your kids you shouldn't be surprised when your kids are molested, right? Neither one of us is going to fix anything. This f**ked up government will outlive us and wreak havoc on future generations. I don't want to be roped into Einstein's theory of insanity so I'm calling Bullshit on this charade. I can live with a Night-Watchman State, but this Fascist Oligarchy masquerading as Western Liberal Democracy needs a good old fashioned hanging :-)

No need to worry, us Liberty Loving, Rugged Individualist, Libertarians won't be shutting down the Statist party anytime soon. Sturgill Simpson already penned your victory song; You can Have the Crown. "Well, they call me King Turd up here on shit mountain, if you want it you can have the Crown." :-)

We can identify all the miss use of terms, however, to no avail, the media is controlled by the

left commies, democats, socialists, etc., following what Lenin, long before T.V., the German

WILL BELIEVE." We have been there for several years.

Brilliant Article and love the Stories about life in Buenos Aires. I used to love Bill Bonner's stories about life on the Ranch near Salta, especially during LockDown .

Thanks for another educational lesson Joel!

I thought the R word was for Republican, or another word used for Retard, because both are very similar in meaning today.

It amazes me how weak the so called right leaders are, and how they either fear the communist in charge, or agree with them. Either way we the people have been sold out and I am just waiting for the happy ending they have devised for us.

I believe we still have a couple of point upswing in the market before the total collapse occurs. I love your energy and oil promotions, as we will keep on making money on oil until depression hits, but energy will be needed to keep our compromised Apple products in good working form so the powers that are can continue to follow our righteous paths.

I also believe Water will be so valuable in our futures, that an investment in property with pure underground springs will save your lives and long term investment in water purification companies will save your money, as we know you can't drink oil nor gold....

Generally an excellent comment and sage advice Mr. Steve.

However, can you show us on the doll where the Bad Orange Man touched you?

Yes my friend…look at the doll (America) and he touched me in my private area (life) when the moron took advice from all the communist around him and shut down our nation 😊….any other questions my brother?

Now I know that your premise is all people make mistakes but that does not make them bad people. Can I assume that Biden has made a few mistakes, but he’s basically a good man???? I I have to ask, do you feel that this country should have a central bank? Thomas Jefferson set a central bank is more dangerous than a standing army. But how to your knowledge you understand central banking better than Jefferson? Jerome Powell is a piece of garbage the same as Biden. They have one job when they wake up in the morning, destroy the country. End the FED.

Your commentary on the the quote from "the Old Grey Lady" evoked an echo from my early childhood...a cartoon television campaign circa 1956, I believe...it involved a hot dog stand owner who heard from one of his customers that dangerous economic conditions were on the horizon which could result in reduced "frivolous spending for such things as hot dogs on the town" and causing the vendor to reduce his ordering which - of course - resulted in fewer sales.

Same message, same propaganda machine, different century...hmmm

Yes, great writing Joel. Just wishing this was a work of fiction. And if you're ever "vacationing" in Geneva...Illinois, let me know. I'll buy you dinner. Even though we are governed by the dumb, incompetent, and corrupt in this state, it's still a mighty fine place to live...for now.

I often get annoyed when they quote an increase in GDP as proof that the "economy" is doing fine, whereas in reality the (printed)money injected in the econopmy is actually destyroying it.

Your satire is appreciated and needed as satyre is now probably the only thing that will demonstrate to the public size of the intelectual pygmies we are dealing with.

If you want to measure production of goods and services, then the first GDP formula is fine

If you want to measure the creation of wealth, then it's not a good formula.

Governments don't make wealth; they consume it to provide the things and services its citizens demand (or presume they demand)
