What kills empires? Overwhelmingly, it's the abuse of citizenship status. Governments extend/bestow "citizenship" or facsimile thereof, as a means of expanding the tax base. Soon, there is no exclusivity of the benefit of the citizenship, and it becomes meaningless. We have experienced this same phenomenon in this "it can't happen here" place we call a "country" over the past 50 years. As societies get more and more prosperous and affluent, they get too "good" to do their own dirty work, and they also stop reproducing and birthrates fall. With falling birthrates come falling government revenues. Government is at the root of all problems of organized societies. Best always. PM

Your assessment is spot on. That is exactly what happened in Rome. And now that we have 20 some odd million "invited newcomers" our society will collapse under the weight of educating, medicating, feeding, clothing and housing them.

Exactly Kevin, but Bill keeps up his "blah blah blah" about Trump, but forgets the consequence of the option. The enormous disaster of a President Harris, and the difference of a man who loves America as much as himself, who works 100+ hours a week trying to fix a dying nation, and a man who can handle the pressure that 99% of men would crumble under. Compare to Bills candidate Kamala, who could smoke more pot in a day then Cheech & Chong combined, sleeps 100+ hours a week, and knows less about running a country, a business or even a head shop then Obama(both DEI hires from start to finish). Yes Kevin, 3rd world get 3rd world, and the party of mental illness gets sicker and sicker...

Full agree, Mike. Unfortunately, first and foremost, the focus needs to be on America. Not punishing the rest of the World with sanctions (aka - tariffs) or bombings. But we aren't seeing the focus back on America. And, to turn around America it would seem building friendship and trust would be paramount but we don't seem to be doing that either. Making the US$ strong again can only happen by unweaponizing the SWIFT system, getting America's debt under control by stopping accumulating it (so far over 1.7T this year), and significantly pairing down the Government and the Military Industrial Complex. From viewing the first 100 days, it certainly doesn't seem the path that has been chosen. I have hope but, frankly, don't see it happening. An ol' man's opinion.

In fairness to DJT, 'Crimea will stay with Russia' might reasonably be interpreted as "We won't stick around to pay for endless (and hopeless) war with Russia over Crimea (or the Donbas region). I know. I'm a sunny optimist.

We don't get to tell the Crimeans what to do or how things will end up for them, but Russia (or Zelensky) does? Evidently, the Crimeans are used to doing what they're told. I don't ever recall reading of Crimean independence in my history lessons. I'm with Bill (partially) in this one: we should not be involved in Crimea, but others are and will be. If we send the signal we don't care, or are laissez-faire, what happens? The recent Crimea upset came in 2014, when the State was the other "Big Guy", Obama. You see the results. Best always. PM

Actially Khrushchev transferred Crimea to Ukraine in 1954 without the vote of the Crimeans. Plus the Crimeans voted to return to Russia in 2014. It's interesting that any US politician would have a problem with this. After all we've annexed Puerto Rico and Hawaii and maintain bases all other the world. We even conducted 67 nuclear tests in the Marshall Islands. Seems like we become a bunch of crybabies when another nation follows our game plan.

"Actually Khrushchev transferred Crimea to Ukraine in 1954 without the vote of the Crimeans." Right you are. I am sure the Crimeans didn't have a say-so, then, either. LOL. I was 2 years old at the time, and I probably was less worked up about it then than I am now, although that would be a wash as to degrees of difference.

All I know is that we never had Crimea, and we seem to have done well without it. I'm not all that broken up either way. The problem is that Putin is not honoring his buddy, Nikita, and the precedent set with Crimea. I think he, Putin, saw an opportunity and took it. Now, is that unusual? In my experience, no. Is it coincidental this annexation took place while Obama was president? Again, I say, "no", since I believe that surely weighed in his decision making. As I have often stated, some objectives, even worthy ones, sometimes carry too high a price to be feasible. We have other fish to fry. For the sake of a settlement in Ukraine, I think the two issues, the "minor incursion" war, and secondarily, Crimea, which preceded the "minor incursion", must be compartmentalized and kept separate. Conflation of the issues is a stall tactic on the part of Zelensky. Best always. PM

It doesn’t matter. It’s not the method or the messaging; it is the intention. Like the “messaging” of the democrats, Trump’s policy hopes, and our’s, are unrealizable in this phase of a dying empire. I wish it weren’t so. The bloated bureaucracy is a giant boulder rolling with mass and velocity down a steep incline. Too many people have too much to lose by working with Trump and co to reduce the size of government, replant the ideals of the Founders, and rebuild our Republic. We’ve allowed our education system to poison the fields of endeavor and plant weeds that thrive in noxious earth. Despite hopeful signs around the world, the course correction is too arduous for my feeble mind to comprehend.

I apologize for my negativity, can’t help it. Our goal is to live out our days in peace. Let the new generation figure it out. Kicking the can further down the road is a well-played game. I’m not a player; I tried for many years without apparent success, except for a couple of tired and sore feet.

The Bible as history is an excellent source for the rise and fall of empires. If you are a non-believer it remains an excellent historical source that is confirmed by extra biblical sources such as Herodotus, Pliny the Younger, Josephus, Tacitus and others as well as much archaeological evidence that aligns with Biblical accounts. What does the Bible have to say on this topic? A great deal, however as to the decline and fall much of it can be distilled into the terse “exceeding depravity and wickedness”. As to things such as money and militaries, those would be included as symptom but not as cause. The crux of the matter perhaps falls into the realm of the believer, but it is that we live in a moral universe and we have a jealous God. Violate those two precepts and you will have an empire that lasts, well, maybe 250 years or so.

The Romans had the circus to distract the public; we have rights to vote for benefits, rights to government money and the public trough, more good stuff for us. Congressman (or woman or whatever) can either vote for benefits or suffer a short public career. A number of the founding fathers pointed this out, but not enough legislators have the character to resist the temptation.

Bill:

FYI, Russian is the main language in Crimea. It is the language that is used in the schools and the most used in the country in addition to Ukrainian and a Crimean language. Trump was not in office when Crimea was taken over by Russia; it was Obama. It is difficult to predict the future on our money problems. In the beginning of an administration in order to balance the budget you begin by cutting the fraud and fraudulent spending. Then you proceed to cut expenses that is less priority for the American people. In the future more cutting will cause some/or much pain on the population when more cuts are made. This is the result of MANY years of previous administrations spending more than was earned (mostly frivolous to get votes). I truly believe that the Trump administration has a good chance of balancing the budget; time will tell. It all depends on the Congress doing the right thing even if it goes against their constituents. Bill, for once, be optimistic as you were with Obama and Biden. AP

Just for the heck of it, I asked Chat GPT why the US wouldn't die like every other empire:

That's a thought-provoking question! History has certainly shown that no empire lasts forever—whether through internal decline, external pressures, or shifts in global power. The USA, like any nation, isn't immune to change. However, it's also unique in that it’s not a traditional empire in the way past dominant powers like Rome or the British Empire were. Its strength comes not just from territorial expansion but from economic influence, cultural power, and technological leadership.

That being said, the future of any nation depends on how it adapts to challenges—economic shifts, political divisions, global competition, and even societal transformation. While some argue that the USA could experience decline similar to past empires, others believe it has the ability to reinvent itself and maintain influence in different ways.

So let me get this straight. Trump states the obvious, specifically the Rooskies are going to get to keep Crimea, which they are and somehow he's become a "Tool of History"? Inherent in Trump's observation is we will quit bleeding money providing the Ukes with guns for free and will thus be (hopefully) able to eschew military spending by that much. Then there's ther attendant Rare Earth mineral deal to partially pay us back for the treasure we've dumped in Ukraine.

“…including means-testing social welfare/pension/medical care benefits,…”

In other words, punish those who’ve actually been productive and successful by reducing/eliminating their benefits, which they were forced by the government to pay into all of their working lives; yet reward the losers, moochers, and leeches who caused themselves to end up with minimal, or no, “means.” Yeah. Please Sluggo, it's much more important to take from those who produce, and give to those who don't, as per the party of mental illness. Why else would a corrupt government allow 20 million illegals in so they could control the vote for the next 200 years? Very much like one of the old leaders of the party of mental illness succeded at many decades ago. LBJ said "I'll have those "N"""Rs" voting Democratic for the next 200 years" as he read the final copy of the Civil Rights Act.

Out of the 20 million illegals, only 25% are currently on our social security dole, making only $2000 each a month...as our American public become homeless and the SS system goes bankrupt...thanks to the party of mental illness...

Many of us have indirect lines to him through prayer and feel blessed, when and if he answers our prayers. However, I'm sure Bill thanks the Lord for his family and success in life.

I remember reading a book about Rome. According to the author ehen Rome was a Republic the rich people would always choose Rome over money. But in later years of the Empire money was the priority. Sounds like what happened here when our overlords transferred the manufacturing base overseas in order to make more money. There are plenty of YouTube videos now illustrating how the large manufacturers make huge profits producing in China. Even Trump's $59.99 Bible was printed in China at $3 a pop.

Good ol' they are rippin' us off except if it effects the Big Boys and then he runs away with his tail between his legs. And, not mentioned today - why are we still in the Middle East?
