Problem solving – by government -- is a problem in itself. It adds costs and complexity... creating more problems to solve... and ultimately dooming a society to failure.
Completely agree that “problem solving” is the problem. Ronald Reagan referenced the problem in his derogatory quip “we’re here from the government and we’re here to help”. He went on to add that government can’t solve problems, rather government is the problem. He understood “the problem” perhaps better than any other US President. I am amazed(shouldn’t be) and aghast at how dyed in the wool this idea of government problem solving is, has been for a long time now. I think of the 1980s meme “How to deprogram your Valley Girl”. All of society needs to be deprogrammed from this notion that government, especially modern government, can actually improve anything. Government has one and only one core competency, that is making everything it touches worse, often to the point of destruction.
A fundamental problem with government is that the people who make bad decisions do not suffer the consequences of those decisions, and thus have no motive to improve their decisions. I don't know how to fix this problem, but at least we should recognize it.
Sadly, I believe that the current "governments" of the West have zero interest in solving ANY problem in their Societies. Sure there ais the occasional righteous Public Servant employed and working to help the world, but the vast majority of government "workers" are all about personal enrichment and being tyrannical as they sit atop their individual little ant hill. Even if it's just a tiny cubicle with a slow, underpowered desktop computer - they be the Chief of their everyday world.
Customer Service and Intelligent Solutions are dead concepts with regard to government agencies. NOBODY gets rewarded for trying to implement better processes, improve the end product or save a single penny. Indeed, this mentality will quickly get you a stack of crap Performance Reviews and a likely termination. Ever been to the DMV? SS Administration? VA? Post Office? IRS Facility?? I only have experience in these places in the US, but it'd be a pretty good guess to assume the "government" services are similar in other parts of the world...
Nailed that one Starboard - in my limited experience it is the same the whole world over. It reminds me of something Russians apparently joked about during the time of the USSR "we pretended to work and they pretended to pay us". Actually there's an awful lot that reminds me of the USSR about where we're heading these days. Governments solving problems?? Don't make me laugh
I thought Dr. Nomi Prins had a good take on government vs. the private sector when it comes to doing business. She pointed out that when government supplies the jobs, either actual government jobs; or, private sector jobs depending heavily on government money (e.g., defense, health care, education, new energy, etc.), government bureaucrats are very reluctant to pull the plug on a failing enterprise because most of the employees are voters. And they are also very slow to discipline or get rid of poor-performing employees, most of whom are voters. And when they do, the separation packages are usually quite generous. Obviously they fear the wrath of their bosses in Congress and the Executive Branch. This is not the case with investment bankers, regular bankers, small investors, owners who own their businesses outright, etc., who don’t care about elections. So they are much more likely to pull the plug on a failing enterprise; and, much more willing to discipline or get rid of poor-performing employees. And the separation packages are usually not remotely as generous as what govt.’s provide. And it’s their money on the line, not taxpayers’ money, so they are much more likely to produce something of value to further enrich themselves. Dr. Prins also mentioned that the Fed has complicated the private sector profit motive since 2008 by propping up jobs in the private sector via trillions of dollars created out of thin air.
So very true. Lest we forget DJT's EO called "Schedule F" that made it MUCH EASIER to FIRE "government" employees for poor performance, malfeasance, moral turpitude, etc. That last one was what had the degenerate dim "employees" shitting bricks.
Ah - it was a BEAUTIFUL thing...while it lasted.
Obviously, it was rescinded by the Traitor in Chief on Day 01 of his installation...
Being in the current process of figuring out lots of Tax-issues - mostly cross border I gained some insight into the systems of german speaking countries (other is Austria and parts of Switzerland) and realised the Germans are the winners:
Number one in the variety of taxes (over 200) and the most expanded tax literature in the world.
Governments can't solve problems correctly, because there is a collective arrogance among their membership. Because of the involvement of too many inputs (voices), they make too many short steps, trying to solve just one part of the problem at a time, without knowing the follow-on effects of not solving the entire problem at once. They don't know the reactions of their small steps to other parts of the systemic problem.
I believe that problem solving was at one time a legitimate and even honest(almost) endeavor of western governments. Examples would be the US Interstate system created by Eisenhower, the national 911 emergency medical response system(Including the worlds best EMTs and aid car response times that spread nationwide), rural electrification in the 1920s, modern water and waste management systems, etc. These were real problems that required large resources and expertise to solve.
Fast forward to the 21st century and this model of problem solving is not only gone(witness the performance and modus operendi of modern DOTs nationwide as just one example), it has been replaced by a totally corrupt system that now serves itself rather than the people.
Put succinctly: There is no longer even the intent to solve problems. The intent is to monetize them for graft and wealth transfer. Full stop
Remember the story (related to interstate development) that in the 1940s through part of the 50s GM bought up the majority of municipal cable cars to destroy this form of public transport. Of course in order to cement the priority of gas guzzling cars. (Which I own myself btw)
If one looks at the net of overland Train lines the US seem to be the lowest developed of all "developed" countries worldwide
Yes there has always been plenty of self-interest where government(and big business) problem solving is concerned. To me honest dealing by the government would mean no subsidies, no bribery and no money laundering, plus transparency(which is the safety valve). If I removed “self-interest” from the equation very little on my list above would have gotten done. GM can buy those cable cars as long as they do it with their own money and, via transparency, the public as well as GM shareholders can weigh in. GM bought those cable cars from the government. That kind of transaction should always be transparent. But this is perhaps the worst part of what occurred - transparency was nowhere in sight.
Unfortunately I’m not smart enough to explain anything, but I do observe patterns.
The “Tainter curve” (general systems dynamics) is an upside down bowl. Complexity grows, tapers, plateaus and then descends to simplicity. Interestingly this is not a people “problem” per se.
It appears to be universal, indeed, is a model of the history of the universe (cosmos) itself. Or at least our ability to describe the cosmos (an epistemological problem perhaps rather than an ontological one…thus the “people” part of the problem even with the universe we observe.) The beginning is one “singularity”. Then there is rapid differentiation (“stratification”) that over short periods of time appear stable (fixed) but continue to change. Oddly at the beginning entropy resembles the initial complexity curve (both are growing) except that as far as we know entropy never stops, so the curves which used to appear conjoined separate and leave us wondering why what seemed true no longer is or doesn’t seem so easy.
Also it appears that what we call time in this plot, and ironically called “entropy” as a measure by Claude Shannon, is increasing information. Again this suggests these “observations” are more the “quality” of knowing than being. We first benefit from information and then perhaps will drown in it.
Agreed. Oh, these crossdresser guys are just funny... On PBS and Johnny Carson in the 60s and 70s. Oh, these poor training people are just confused. We need to help them.... It's o k that guy's light in the foot. He's very nice. I like him. I'm not so much on that gay side.... But the real wack jobs are attempting to take things over. It looks like an upside down bowl curve. Entropy. System failure.....? When did the Aztec overboards start gutting their citizens literally? I guarantee it wasn't all at once. Pretty sure it was that whole curve. We see all that stuff ends. Disappointing that they let it come to that. Any lessons here?
Don't you get tired of continuously exposing our rancid government and never seeing any improvement? In fact, it only gets worse. So what are we doing anyway? Oh, don't forget to vote.
Never had heard that story, of Cortez, but government solving problems seems pretty damn likely given what we are seeing with climate change, covid, debt creation as the comprehensive solution for too much debt. defund the police, etc. Never would have believed government would try all this imbecilic stuff had I not seen it happen with my own eyes.
Neil Gorsuch’s new book: “Overruled: The Human Toll of Too Much Law” directly highlights the same theme in present day US government. Highly recommended read.
