Completely agree that “problem solving” is the problem. Ronald Reagan referenced the problem in his derogatory quip “we’re here from the government and we’re here to help”. He went on to add that government can’t solve problems, rather government is the problem. He understood “the problem” perhaps better than any other US President. I am amazed(shouldn’t be) and aghast at how dyed in the wool this idea of government problem solving is, has been for a long time now. I think of the 1980s meme “How to deprogram your Valley Girl”. All of society needs to be deprogrammed from this notion that government, especially modern government, can actually improve anything. Government has one and only one core competency, that is making everything it touches worse, often to the point of destruction.

A fundamental problem with government is that the people who make bad decisions do not suffer the consequences of those decisions, and thus have no motive to improve their decisions. I don't know how to fix this problem, but at least we should recognize it.
