In 1980, around the time our national debt crossed the one-trillion line, the von Mises-influenced economist, Jerome Smith, published his revelatory book, "The Coming Currency Collapse". Smith's work was accessible, sensible, and direct: we were ruining ourselves via deficits, money printing, and inflation. Our doom was at hand. I started prepping, buying silver, stocking up, becoming (more) cynical, "inflation-proofing" myself, and started believing in my own intellectual and moral superiority. Meanwhile, life happened, and Godot STILL hasn't shown up. The inflationary depression we've been promised, like the 2nd Coming, is imminent, we're told. That which is unsustainable won't continue! Either that's wrong, or what's going on IS sustainable. Pardon me, but I've lost interest, or at least, I tell myself that. After a while, it's easier to believe the whole thing, all of it, is a crock. Best always. PJM

Yep. I'm on another whiny forum where people complain about everything, and some even take to the courts, and sometimes "win." Rest assured, the US, and the world, is heading for an economic collapse of Biblical proportions, and then some. But afterwards, the world will end for the vast majority. And who wants to hear that? Till then, life goes on, I guess.

There simply is only one explanation for taking a path that simply doesn't make sense and cannot work i.e. more debt has always failed, in all cases. Why can't we take a logical route that is virtually guaranteed to succeed, but would be difficult for the leaders.

The explanation is in my opinion psychopaths.

The reason we're in the pickle that Bill so masterfully described is because our failure was baked in at the get-go

When our Constitution omitted the requirement the Congress balance the Federal budget without resort to borrowed funds, we began electing to office Congressmen who would not govern wisely, but those who promised to give us access to the Federal trough

Once they get in office, they put foremost their reelection ahead of the needs of the nation. And they won't leave unless defeated (hard to do given the power of incumbency) or die in office (most recently, Senator Feinstein)

If you really really need access to this trough full of OPM, then offer to become a member of the fund raising committee of a Congressional campaign. In my day, I was raised funds for a batch of Congressmen. It was fun too until cash donations and gifts were prohibited

There's still hope we might get the Ship of State back on course but not with any candidates being proffered by our current two dominant political parties. Worrisome

She had a wonderful career. She didn't want to quit, a commendable spirit. But her final year in office revealed for all to see that she was far from the woman she once was. She was grievously ill, mentally unstable and very aged in appearance. She died with her boots on even if her constituents and colleagues deserved better during her decline. Pity she didn't retire, an event that would have allowed the entire Senate to applaud her long service to their Chamber and to the nation.

I'm intrigued to understand investor perspectives on the market implications of extraterrestrial contact. Given the recent congressional hearings, we seem to be approaching a significant disclosure. Dr. Steven Greer claims to have evidence of advanced energy and power technologies presently held in classified programs. Some insiders suggest gold as a prudent investment in this context. What are your thoughts, or have you considered the potential economic ramifications?

The recent "mainstreaming" of UFOs and "Aliens" is purposeful. The Days are short and the evil in charge will use these fantasies to scapegoat when they can't explain how MILLIONS of people, all around the world, disappear at the same instant - "in the twinkling of an eye."

There's a prevailing rumor about a staged alien invasion, which can be traced back to Werner Von Braun's final words, suggesting potential deception. However, it's an overreach to assert that no extraterrestrial entities with benevolent intentions would visit Earth. Numerous testimonies hint that they might already be among us.

On a related note, you haven't addressed my inquiry regarding the potential impact of such an event on the financial markets. I'd appreciate your insights on this.

Hi: Bill

This is Joe Wagner , I have a question about this post , I was wondering if you could explain what you mean by a Inflationary depression ?

Thanks Joe

Expand full comment
Gordon's avatar

Joe,

I'm not Bill, but I'll take a stab at your question. A depression is a prolonged period of below average economic activity - producing, investing, trading, saving, etc. A deflationary depression can result when everyone wants to hold onto the money they have, and as a consequence of greatly reduced spending across the economy, economic activity goes down.

An inflationary depression occurs when no one wants to work or invest because they have no way of saving the value of their labor - money ceases to be a reliable store of value. The entire focus of the populace is on getting by today, rather than preparing and working for a better future. If you have read anything about the Weimar inflation, this describes an inflationary depression.

If anyone wants to expand on, clarify, or correct what I have written, please feel free.

One can look toward either Argentina, or Venezuela, as examples of an inflationary depression, although the politicos, and the controled media might try to convince you otherwise.

Paul Murray's avatar

I like your answer very much. Another way of looking at it is "the money goes broke". In a deflationary depression, WE go broke, because no one can afford expensive, hi-value money. In an inflationary depression, anyone can have as much money as he wants. Trouble is, having all the money is still not enough. The money goes broke. Best always. PM
