In addition to cutting spending or going deeper in debt, there's a third way; to wit: create more wealth. After all, wealth is made, and without it, there's nothing to tax. And more wealth gives the government (at all levels) more revenue to tax and, therefore, to fund government programs and even to pay its debt.
To enable more wealth-creation, our elected representatives should be able to agree on a list of regulatory impediments that stymie the risk-taking entrepreneurs, whether solo individuals or large corporations and every enterprise between, from making more wealth.
The ingredients to make more wealth are readily available of which the most important is capital. What's impeding these wealth-makers is not fear; it's government regulations of which there are gazillions.
So, to bring down the curtain on this latest Debt Crisis Theater, instead of one side seeking to ravage spending plans and the other side vigorously defending these plans, then both will appreciate the benefit of removing an array of regulations inhibiting wealth-making.
The dims and domestic enemies (but again, I repeat myself) in our "government" will NEVER agree to any reduction in regulations in any area of our Society or Economy.
