“49% favor increasing government spending”. That’s the 49% who don’t pay any income tax but receive government benefits. Any surprise here?

Expand full comment

To be perfectly fair, we should note that many of the 49% do pay other taxes (payroll taxes and state and local taxes). These taxes do take a significant chunk of their income. However, I have seen government data that show most receive government benefits in excess of the amount of taxes that they pay.

TF: Not sure where you got your 49% number, but everyone I have spoken to does not want more spending by the government. It just increases our taxes as you know. Wish they would get more from the ultra rich (esp., if they don't pay any taxes now). I know... dream on.

You can find this information on a variety of websites including irs.gov. It's actually closer to 47% that don't pay any income taxes (not to be confused with "payroll taxes" which are Social Security and Medicare), but Tom's point is still valid. What I've gathered from your previous posts is that you don't travel in the circle of people that Tom was referring to. Our problem, as Bill has chronicled ad nauseam, is that the politicos have figured out how to get what they want to give away without raising taxes (i.e. "borrowing" and "printing").

I was commenting on Joel’s note about the PEW Research Center poll. That’s where the 49% that want more spending number came from. I just generalized the 49% that don’t pay income tax from other information that I’ve heard over the years, maybe it’s 47%, maybe it’s 50%. Depends on how you count it.

Agreed, I've seen the percentage all over the map. I just chose the most conservative (lowest one) because of who I was responding to.

So the Chinese have been spying on the USA from Cuba over some of the best rum & cigars you can find.

What a waste of money that the Treasurer of China has spent, to bail out billions to Cubans when all he needs to do is get info by -

1) Subscribing to BPR for a very few coin and zero gold.

2) Have all the wisdom of the team translated into Mandarin, downloaded on to his Chinese made iPhone.

3) Read over tea, noodles or maybe Scotch or Malbec in 10-15 minutes each few days.

4) Be fully briefed on every weakness, developing economic blunder, creeping decay in the empires of the West & their democratic quagmires of governance.

I find it the definition of justice that the majority of the people were all for taxing 'rich people' when the income tax was instituted in 1913. Not many years went by before the definition of 'rich people' applied to these envious people. Selfish human nature never pays, sooner or later, justice will catch up to you. The survey results show that most people don't learn from their mistakes, or don't know history, or both.

You wrote one of the most salient sentences I have read in the past five years- ‘wars of choice’ are a racket, meant to enrich and empower the few at the expense of the many.

This debt problem has never happened before. But this is how to fix it.

Cut Interest rate, then raise Interest rate every other month for 15 years.

And create a new dollar CBDC tied to Gold.

SLASH TAXES.

Slightly progressive.

Balance the budget.

Chapter 13 reorganize.

Shrink Federal Government 50%.

Expand full comment

Hey Donald. I know you were just like me meaning a conservative. I don’t want the government to set interest rates. There should be no federal reserve in my humble opinion. Let the marketplace determine what the interest rate should be. Without the federal reserve, all these wars of choice would end.

Expand full comment

Thought the same thing many years ago. Bottom line is that Federal Reserve has become a political instrument. Their mission was changed by Congress to support full employment. In other words, they can’t really fix anything.

sounds just like the plan that Dr Ron Paul proposed in 2012 .. not a chance!

Shrinking the Federal government 50% will put a lot of people out of work.

Expand full comment

Most gov workers don't actually make anything or protect our country. The out-of-work 50 percent would stop being included in the deficit and there would be little difference noticed by the average Joe.

Those 50 percent could then fill some of those open positions in the private sector. After getting 'real' employment, they will be paying taxes instead of requiring taxes be paid by others for their compensation.

It's interesting that the NYT cannot have an article that mentions Bobby Kennedy without including negativity. Recently, for example, in a NEWS story, they said that his wife will be joining his campaign and that this might "normalize his dangerous ideas." There was no attempt to identify his "dangerous ideas", or explain why they are "dangerous" in this NEWS story. Supposedly, they are "dangerous" because the NYT says they are, and that's that! For this and sundry reasons, I've cancelled my subscription - the corruption is just overwhelming.

Sadly you are both wrong about trying to now change the direction of the USS carrier turned into a destroyer back in 2012 .. you ignored the only candidate who had a chance to turn the ship onto a different course as there was still enough political will/capital for Dr Ron Paul to manage it, given the makeup of the Congress .. today that conglomeration of misfits is no longer capable of altering the course of the USS ship .. having spent millions to support Dr Paul's campaign I can assure you from firsthand experience that you (JFKjr) don't have a hope in hell of even getting him onto the ballet .. the forces of hell have been unleashed and nothing that so called "average americans" can or even have the will, intelligence or sensitivity to realise the path they are now on .. the real Armageddon master's are in the east both in the US and Europe .. unless they somehow stop the current incarnation of Hitler/Putin and his criminal cartels embedded in EVERY aspect of human life .. the people have no vision/hope for a better future and no one to lead them and sadly JFKjr is not the right character either .. so don't waste your time effort or energy on a losing cause ..

The crowd is usually wrong, so thanks for confirming I have the correct position.

Don't assume, BTW, that I consider the US or Ukraine "the good guy." There are no real "good guys," and never were. Not even the Allied powers in WWII.

I guess that requires some explanation, since most people are ignorant of history. The Allied powers said they would never firebomb/attack civilians. Yep, they did - Hiroshima, Nagasaki, Dresden are just a few examples. Mussolini had gotten rid of the mafia in Italy. The US revived them, in order to win the war. Stalin was such a monster, that many Russians joined the Nazis, to defeat Russia. After the war, these 'freedom fighters' were returned to the Soviet Union by the Allies, and either executed right away, or slowly executed by sending them to the Gulags. Those are just a few examples. No nation has 'clean hands.' The US and the Allies wanted to win at any cost, so they made a deal with the devil. The devil will have his due.

Hi Alex. This is John Kennedy’s missile crisis of 1962. He was ready to risk nuclear war to defend his position. He did not want missiles belong to Russia 90 miles away in Cuba. Putin wants the same thing. He does not want NATO missiles on the border with Ukraine. Did you know Ukraine has been shelling to Dan bass since 2014? That’s where a sizable Russian population lives. John Kennedy wanted peace with Russia, the same as Trump did. You can see what the establishment politicians have done. I am truly amazed a person on this thread does not see this. I see you’re quite upset by Putin. Have you considered in listing in the Ukrainian army? They are taking volunteers.

In a recent Ameriprise assessment of the economy, this statement stood out to me: “If the Fed remains on the sidelines through the rest of the year and possibly cuts rates sometime in early 2024, that could give risk assets some breathing room and allow stock leadership to broaden to more cyclical areas over time.” My question to them is, if Fed inactivity is good for the markets during bad times, why not keep its hands out of the batter in good times? Their recipe seems noxious, right?
