Who would have thunk it. Russian hosting an international conference and helping to bring peace between India and China. Meanwhile at the NATO conference earlier this year, the NATO countries were figuring out how to expand the war between the Ukraine and Russia and keep the death toll of Ukranian's rising. NATO which was a defensive alliance should be disbanded to further world peace. Its mission was over when the the USSR disbanded decades ago. I don't think the West appreciates how much the developing BRICS resent the old guard in the West. They have alot of countries applying for membership and have 50% of the economic output int he world and like 70% of the population. The West sticks their noses into everything and lots of times makes a mess.

The Chinese breached border agreements that kept the peace for 25 years, to take advantage of the Wuhan virus and seize territory in multiple places.

The Chinese hardly backed off from the goodness of their hearts. Clearly they have other pressing matters to solve first. Before we get all misty-eyed about the freedom between BRICS nations, we should note China is the same bully at a regional scale - just check with the South East Asians.

No collection of sovereign states is equal in which China and Russia are members. Putin dreams of the old Rus, and Xi imagines that he is entitled to rule the world.

Color me skeptical when it comes to BRICS.

Oh Billy. Again with the gratuitous Trump insults? Whom in your little circle of shadow puppets are you trying to impress? Beside your statement being false on its face, you know as well as WE do that Trump was not referring to China, India, Turkey or Russia (ok, well maybe India) with his otherwise VERY accurate assessment of certain Countries around the world. Do better and stop with the gaslighting and half-truths spewed from your keyboard just because you have an irrational hard-on for Donald J. Trump. Contrary to what you may believe, it is not a flattering look.

This coming from a guy who is an alleged 𝙚𝙭𝙥𝙚𝙧𝙩 at identifying and then connecting Dots? Dear Bill, if you are going to make a statement like this then you need to also let us know when it 𝗜𝗦 time to start "worrying" and what actions we should take to alleviate and/or protect against that worry. I'm not a Financial, Real Estate or International Living expert, but I am astute enough to realize that the solidifying of International Settlement methods other than SWIFT (y'know, like what they DID accomplish at last week's BRICS meeting) likely 𝗜𝗦 something that deserves maybe a tiny bit of "worry", and perhaps even some complimentary action to protect our hard-earned treasure. As mentioned, I'm not an expert so I don't know what those actions should be. That's kinda why we're all here.

Nah - Bonner says essentially don't worry, no action needed, carry on.

Sheesh man. You really phoned it in today, didn't you?

Finally, I will say "Bravo" on the magazine cover. How very fitting that the USD is on fire, starting at the method of Propulsion...

It seems to me that Bill has a lot of experience and tries to disturb a few feathers to understand what moves us. I hope so anyway. Maybe Bill doesn't have a lot more knowledge than the rest of us, just more a knowledge about how to make money or keep money.

Now Trump's latest idea of getting rid of taxes and replacing them with tariffs seems brilliant in the context of reducing government, although not part of his argument intelligently. It seems likely to break part of the leftist idea of big, bigger and biggest state protection system, that which is corrupt and growing. I can think of nothing more infuriating to the leftists than to get rid of the tax system and the 100,000 new IRS agents. I believe in free trade but it also seems there are times when a nation needs to rely on itself and although the world isn't that friendly (understandable for sure given our propensity to attack) but maybe it is time to work within the US to create an honest culture, one with integrity of its leaders to exhibit humility. My take on the Developed Country leaders right now is they are liars, war mongers which are printing and spending like idiots trying to retain power desperately. I like whatever disturbance Trump and instigate to these bleeding hearts. They don't know what they are doing but have a narrative which they think they can push onto society and spend it into oblivion. They believe they have control of the economy and that they can control society with all their collusive efforts and propaganda. The wars and simply foolish spending (on windmills for god's sake, their narrative) provide in my view the destruction of America through hubris. I view it as a bunch of inexperienced comrads who are going to stop hate and sexuality. I don't see Trump as the brainchild of solution at all but he does have the guts and audacity to stand up against these clowns.

I'm going to buy an Economist now. Got to have that cover on my wall too.

When I started studying economics I remember thinking the Economist must be some insightful magazine. But then when the stock market usually did the opposite of what the predictors predicted I was confused. Business Week had the same effect. Eventually I realized there was always an agenda behind these guys. They were amazingly wrong! It was like they were trying to deceive.

Bought the mag. My opinion of the Rabinovitch and Curr article was that it was weak. It might be that America is "in the lead" but the analysis seemed very European to me. What has helped America was the immigration, the government stepping in to save the economy, the reserve currency,...

I think the far better article was "Free Exchange" on Daron Acemoglu, Simon Johnson of MIT and James Robinson from U of Chicago. They wrote " The Colonial Origins of Comparative Development: An Empirical Investigation" which proposed the idea that institutions are central to economic growth. "America, Australia and Canada attracted Europeans settlers by offering them a chance to share in the wealth they produced via private property and free markets." My thoughts are this is the reason why America has had better productivity than most all these other nations which the following simple example demonstrates well. When one has an idea or a product which is free to be used as every individual American desires, in his own way as opposed to a centrally planned product like forcing everyone to use an EV, then this produces a million (or the number of people in the country) the ability to use that product or idea in each of a million ways. The result is a better product or a better result with a million different tests. If the society is forced to use the idea in the way that a few elite want it to be used then that only represents a few ideas or a few tested products/ ideas. Guess which system will provide a better result? Freedom and liberty are also an extremely important part of free ideas and free testing. Furthermore the motivation to utilize the idea and to improve the idea are not restricted. These centrally planned ideas are so restrictive and provide essentially no motivational aspect to use and distribution.

Yeah, BRICS is going to be the answer, because they are all going to be "equal", like the start of the US. Let's see! China has the largest world's navy, a million man army, a government that rules it's unarmed citizens with an iron fist and no thought of expanding. Additionally, we have countries acquiring atomic weapons like a popcorn machine spews out kernals. However, we know that none of these "equal" countries or "non members" would ever make a mistake (for whatever reason) and use one of those weapons, because all countries would eventually be "equal".

I am guessing that the "acquiring atomic weapons" comment refers to Iran. Is that correct? Are there others? I'm asking sincerely.

Expand full comment
kenneth dame's avatar

I have no reliable info that there are others but I read something about South Africa having plans to do so. But Atomic Weapons aslo include Neutro Bombs (I believe that's the correct spelling). This is an atomic weapon that is exploded in the atmosphere and immediately destroys the electrical grid of a vast area, without directly killing people or structures. Anyway, you youngsters no far more about Atomic Weapons than this old man. Besides Iran, what about North Korea, that already has them.

Hi Jimm -

Don't look now, but it seems like that is exactly what they did last week. Settlement System first, new Currency with real Tangible VALUE second...

https://www.reuters.com/world/factobox-main-points-brics-declaration-2024-10-23/

It is VERY difficult to find anything that informs as to what decisions were actually finalized last week. I had seen something last Friday that mentioned the adoption of the BRICS Cross Border Payment System and the BRICS Clear Depositary (that's how they spelled it) - doing a quick search now and can't find anything.

Hmmmmm. In light of the complete ignoring the summit got from the Western "media" last week, I'm sure I'm just not looking hard enough.

Not. Looking. Hard. Enough...
