Bill, this is so spot on: "But at scale, ‘democracy’ becomes a fraud." I do think many Deplorables are finally realizing the Uniparty is not going to lead them to the promised land. They need to evolve into true Irredeemables. Secession is the only viable way forward. If Democracy is your goal, it will stand a much better chance for success at a State or Local level. Could also be a boon for the environment if we toss all the DC apparatchiks in the wood chipper; a Twofer :-)
Bill is off his game today. While it's impossible to argue with the fact that every penny every level of government collects comes from people and businesses (which are run by people) there are issues with some of his positions.
First, if they are going to cut taxes, who else but the high earners (producers) are they going to give the cuts? Especially when it is a fact that only about 50 percent of Americans pay income tax and the top 20 percent of income earners pay 70 percent of all the income tax that's paid. Not to mention that through various income distribution schemes people that pay no income tax receive "refunds" via tax credits (quite the oxymoron).
Second, though I applaud Bill's mantra that government spending needs to be reduced (bigly), he doesn't make a very good case for his position that "tax cuts (without parallel spending cuts) are a fraud." The reason the government's revenue has increased each time tax cuts were enacted is because it frees up capital for the producers (that would be paying more income tax without the cut) to use those tax savings to invest more in their enterprises. That in turn, produces more income (not just for the high earners, but also for those they employ) and thus more tax receipts.
As Bill points out, those that earn enough for a portion of their income to land in high tax brackets also hire high priced accountants and attorneys whose sole purpose is to figure out how to keep as much money out of those higher brackets as possible. When tax brackets and rates are modified to the benefit of these producers, they become more focused on creating income and less on protecting it. Perhaps in a future missive Bill could expound on his position and make a case for why tax cuts alone are a fraud, because a wise man once told me: If a man can design a tax code, another man can find a way around paying taxes.
What I believe that Bill is trying to say, is that the message that those attempting to get elected are saying, is that YOU the general voter, are going to get a tax cut if I <fill in the blank> get elected. Just so that THEY, the shameless candidate, can get into office. When you, I and everyone here (including Bill) knows, its a sham. A ploy. An election time stunt to get some votes, as all the tax cuts are going to go to those with the biggest tax bills. Certainly not the person living in a tenement in Chicago, or a tent on the North Shore of Hawaii.
Thank You for your message and the thoughts within.
To put your mind at rest, i am on the Paid Side of the Pay Wall. It is my favourite purchase in decades.
I too read Tom’s missives with intense concentration.
Wouldn’t it be magic if Tom proves to be right and we can buy beaten-up and beaten-down Dividend Aristocrats and then just “Go to the Beach” for the rest of our lives....and then pass them down to our Kids.
This gesture would go some way to ameliorate the quiet but intense belief, in that of the under 35’s that The System is, actuarially and practically rigged against them ever really securing a mortgage-free home and a pot of meaningful capital.
Come-on Tom!!! We are rooting for You! We saying a little prayer here and there and we are definitely hoping that The Luck of the Irish will smile down on us.
We don’t borrow from each other. We borrow from the future, from our grandchildren and their grandchildren to pay for current consumption. This cannot last.
"Families like those of Michael Bloomberg and Donald Trump? They’ve got the money. But they also have lawyers and lobbyists to make sure they don’t have to give too much of it to the government."
Funny how both were close friends in the democratic cult, and both became Republicans around the same time...
Tax cuts are a farce to be sure. The end result is increased taxes, kind of like that PPP: Public- Private- Partnership except, I never signed into the club membership. Move along nothing to see, "hear".
Since reparations look to be in the millions per person as proposed in California, will they lose over half the first year they file income taxes? It would still be a net loss for whoever funds this steal. Local tax regions may benefit the most.
I told my friends back in 2018 that the tax burden gets paid by the working people and corporations. period. 50 % of the people get net benefits from the government. They will pay nothing. So all tax "breaks" do is shuffle the other 50% around with what they pay. The Trump "cut" cost me more in taxes. It was a sham, and all Repubs bought into it. Funny thing is that Demoroncrats knew it was not a real break and still whipped up their masses into a fury. The Feds have systematically isolated the real backbone of this country and have fostered a deep seated loathing for the government among people who carry the load.
Bill: "Politicians say they want to ‘protect America’s hardworking families.’ But in the dank and dark of megapolitics…the middle classes will have to pay. "
Joel: "Brace for impact."
Jonathan CV: Is this really, positively, at this point in time, the unarguable truth? If so, what is to be done? If not, then what other outcome and challenges should we prepare for?
What Matters Most Is What Lasts Longest. Which preparations serve us and those around us for all possible societal near futures? I am certain that there are such preparations, and they have at least something to do with money.
Got me thinking, especially after Dave J wrote his piece about taxes and the rich. I wondered what the US, citizens and corps were paying in taxes. Stats were rather revealing.
In 2020, the US made roughly 20T in GDP. Same year, roughly 5T was gathered in taxes. Roughly 25%.
Of that 5T in taxes, here were the apportions:
41% from US citizens
5% from Corporations
25% from Social Security Contributions
12% from Property taxes
17% on general sales taxes
Total 100%
The Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development tracks member countries, and their tax vs GDP numbers. The highest taxed country was Denmark, at 46.9% of GDP. The lowest was Mexico at 16.7% GDP. The US ranked 33rd out of 39, in ONLY taxing their population 26.6% of GDP, ahead only of great powers like Costa Rica (24.2%), Turkey (22.8%), Chile (22.2%), Ireland (21.1%), Colombia (19.5%) and Mexico (16.7%).
The average taxation rate amongst OECD countries was 34%.
Does anyone see a problem?
No?
How about a solution?
Do all the things that Bill suggests in his Clowns and Jokers post, Dec 23, 2022.
Then to accelerate the draw down on the deficit, let's move the tax rate to the AVERAGE tax rate of 34% of GDP. Getting another 2T in tax money, while saving a sh*tload on all the other cuts (especially the military) and the deficit could be wiped out in less than 10 years.
Now if only we could stop the politicians from making more asinine promises.
OK Luke, before I begin let me first say that anything I say here is offered with all due respect and with malice toward none. I took time to reread Bill's "Clowns and Jokers" piece just so I am on the same page with you. I would point out that in his "Modest Suggestions" section of that missive, he does not mention anything about tax rates, tax cuts or the income side of the government's ledger. He does make bold suggestions for changing military policies and spending, eliminating the fed and cutting other types of spending like foreign aid. Most of which I agree with, but it doesn't corroborate or refute any of the points I made yesterday.
So looking at the stats you presented in your response to me I will say a few things. First, the numbers you present are an orange to my apple. Why? Because when we discuss cuts to income taxes it skews the analysis when other taxes such as payroll (i.e. Social Security and Medicare), property and sales are brought into the equation. Because Bill's reference to tax cuts in his diary entry yesterday most certainly was limited to federal income taxes (because they affect everyone and state income tax varies widely) I will focus only on them. There are other issues with your numbers because the federal government doesn't see any of the property and sales taxes that are paid, those are retained by state and local governments (this makes me think you might not be in the U.S.?)
During the federal government's last full fiscal year 2021-2022 which ended in September 2022, they collected 4.05 trillion. I'm fairly certain your $5 trillion number includes money paid to and collected by state and local governments, which again makes this apples to oranges.
But, to put this in perspective based on what you seem to think should be a $1.8 trillion increase in federal income tax receipts, let's analyze how that pencils out:
161,031,000 People Employed during April 2023 (Source: U.S. BLS)
82,125,810 People that pay federal income tax (51% PEW Research)
To get your $1.8 trillion in additional revenue from federal income taxes, rates and brackets would need to be changed to increase the tax an average of $21,917 per individual tax payer! If there's an attempt to spread it out by increasing payroll taxes (which will affect everyone that's employed) there will be an even lower Labor Participation Rate (it's only 62.6% now) because the government handout programs will be even more competitive with net pay from employment (that's a whole other problem).
On the other hand, if by cutting taxes for those that can expand GDP so that the $20 trillion pie gets larger, tax receipts absolutely rise as they have done historically. Clearly the situation is complicated, but I think Bill's suggestions in his "Clowns and Jokers" article are spot on, but it doesn't entail doing anything with tax rates and brackets. The government simply needs to shrink, bigly.
I am pretty well the same as you. Just posting stuff that I read or find on the Internet. Only for fun, also with malice towards none.
I too was concentrating on just federal taxes. The link in my post, is where I was getting the info. The IRS says the same. Mostly. $4.9T in federal taxes.
Raising taxes is always a tricky endeavor. That's why Bill steers clear of it. In fact, if all the points in Bill's "Modest Suggestions" were implemented, taxes wouldn't need to be raised.
But let's face it. No one's going to phase out Social Security or Medicare overnight. And like Bill said in today's missive. "Someone's gotta pay."
So how about those 80 some odd million that don't pay federal income tax? 161M employed, but only 80M pay?
Amazing.
While my tax raise would potentially cost an extra $21k per individual taxpayer, your numbers are also a bit outlandish too. If 5T came from its citizens (as the IRS states actually happened) and only 82M paid any tax by your claims, that means that the average person was paying 60k per year in taxes in 2022.
Hardly.
We know that averages don't tell the whole story. Some people will pay more, and some less. However, if you've ever played SimCity on a computer, you know that if you raise the tax rates too high, you're in for unemployment, chaos and rebellion from your digital plebes. Same in real life.
Cut the tax rates for those that can expand the GDP, and they're going to create trust funds to shelter that cash for their own families. Not expand the GDP. Tax rates aren't what drive the majority of entrepreneurs. They are in it for the profits, and charge accordingly. The tax line is an expense. Tax cuts are bonuses, but not incentives to create new lines of business. Opportunities to make another buck is what drive entrepreneurs to open another factory or another store.
As a result of this discussion, I investigated the BEA (Bureau of Economic Analysis) and exactly what comprises the US GDP. Too funny. Another publicly funded organization, I bet that 99% of the populace has NO clue even exists.
Total amount of Goods (things that people make, grow or extract from the land) and Services (actions that people do for others) produced within the United States in a year.
I'll have more to post, after I dissect the GDP for 2022.
I haven't had time to look at your links, but totally agree that if Bill's "Modest Suggestions" were implemented it would not be necessary to raise taxes. And as I'm sure you'll agree, Hell will freeze over before any of his ideas are implemented. What I also tell people is: Regardless of what system is used to collect taxes, they're always going to focus on taking more from those that have money to take; and, until they reign in spending such that it has some connection to what they collect, taxes are just going to keep increasing.
I'm always up for a good debate. But, it will have to wait until a bit later on today as I'm off to the driving range to get ready for a round this morning. I will get back to you on this for sure.
Bill summarized what goes on in our land to the dot. He offered no solution. Perhaps we should consider creating a new party like a National Socialist American Workers Party like Hitler did. This would be an incredible brand name where democrats could hide behind even better than their present democratic (manipulative) party.
America loves brand names. It makes it easy to determine just about everything and no thinking required. There are hypothesis that Hitler borrowed from America the concept of racial purity. That is no joke. Those naive enough to believe that American government stands for democracy have to dedicate some of their attention to the next election.
Bill’s post unfortunately and most likely reaches those that share his view. The others would not consider any controversial position and walk away from reading what others have to say.
It must have been God’s will to create people in these various categories like manipulators and suckers. The suckers have their tentacles rapped around the manipulators because that is what they think is it their mission in life.
Military recruiters visit high schools all over America looking for boys to serve their country. How little do these boys know that they serve an elite not the flag that represents the people in the trenches. The elite is interested in one thing, money and they will not come short of taking any step to place their paws over it. They thrive in peace and war.
It was Trump, the first president, who came into the presidency with a plan to take real care of our veterans. Before Trump the masses of soldiers returning from useless wars were treated like a tool that outlived its usefulness.
Only half of past presidents served in the military but played the role of commender and chief. How should Americans know where their spirit lies? Their campaign rhetoric is worthless. We do not even know if there is a possibility they can serve an enemy. The big advertising money is good for corporations not the future of our country.
America needs to revamp our system of picking a government to serve the people.
The length of the story is not an issue. The story is. Ultimately it is about progress where the old Empire ways see the darkness and a new way leading to peace and prosperity takes over. Can it be done is the big question.
What's with Mr. Jarsen's posts being removed? I don't support that, nor am I offended by what he said (his curses were not really directed to me). His responses should remain for all to see, not censored.

We don’t borrow from each other. We borrow from the future, from our grandchildren and their grandchildren to pay for current consumption. This cannot last.
And while all this is going on, the politicians and press push a straight white phobic social content to keep people divided. ...JJ
Wait untill the new monies get their introduction to the IRS tax codes. I remember my first 1099 filings. This is going be interesting.
Megapolitics? So if I see something I don’t understand am I supposed to say “That must be Megapolitics”, and move on? I prefer delving a bit deeper.
"Families like those of Michael Bloomberg and Donald Trump? They’ve got the money. But they also have lawyers and lobbyists to make sure they don’t have to give too much of it to the government."

Do not. I repeat Do not raise the debt ceiling.
No one listens to us.
So they will raise it at the last minute.
And we cannot un-elect the politicians who keep voting for it
One of two things are happening.
Either our vote does not count.
Or it does and politicians can’t change anything.
Both are bad.
SO DO NOT RAISE THE DEBT LIMIT.
Let this dumpster fire burn out.
Then when we are starving & dying in our homes.
Ask us to vote for you.
Hey Donald. I for one do not intend to be starving, nor dying in my home. There is still time to prepare.

SE,
Is it possible PGV has just been flushed out explosively? I strongly suspected his absence could never last.

I just changed my moniker, very easy to do. IJ’s denial smells suspicious….
That's not PGV, the writing style is far too different. That is until IJ got to the "fuck you" part-lol.
Did you mean Personal Guided Vehicle?
Don’t know what PGV represents. I have never heard that I’m PGV but perhaps I am.
It's a long story.
Bill did provide a solution. Back on Dec 23rd, 2022 in his post called Clowns and Jokers.

We're still trying to find the brave soul that will run with that platform. CV would include:
a) absolutely no family
b) wears body armor 24/7
c) thick skin
d) can withstand the biggest bag of cash dangled in front of nose
e) actually wants to do the right thing for everyone, other than him or herself
