It was obvious that the British Empire was in decline. And the Gallipoli campaign helped bring down all three empires — Tsarist Russia, the Ottoman Turks, and the UK.

Wow! and what a "large" Jewish population it is! Only about 10,000.
Pre 1979 it was over 80,000...

How do you feel about the 300 nukes in Israel possession with NO reporting nor Inspection requirements? The only country that has used a NUKE on another state is US. If Iran had conventional missile that reached the east coast we NEVER would have started this war. You also failed to acknowledge they offered ZERO enrichment days before we attacked.
You've bought into the narrative posited by the Trump administration. It's so easy to forget why we invaded Iraq? Who went to jail for that WMD LIE? Fortunately, Trump NEVER lies.

Today Bill Bonner, neither Prime Minister, President, Senator, nor Lord of the Admiralty, aims his Guns of Navarone at Sir Winston Churchill, laying off Trump for a day largely, and who was one of the Greatest British Statesmen in History (a rather bloody history in its Monarchy and also in Ireland) in his Know it all elitist academic isolationist anti war at all times and at any cost, libertarian nincompoop nonsense. Oh well.
I am not a PhD in History, nor desire to be one. I studied a LOT of history in college and professionally. Gallipoli was indeed a tragedy and perhaps poorly planned and poorly executed and yet it wasnt British soldiers fighting there, only the Irish (then Part of UK) and ANZ. Poor Churchill took a beating over its disaster at home. But he was not wrong in trying to take it and unblock the Dardanelles from the bloodthirsty Turks. Enter Sir Lawrence of Arabia and he lead a group of irregulars, not national army, soldiers on horses in the Middle East to LIBERATE the Middle East from the Turks....blowing up trains and so forth, in one of the greatest films EVER made, to take revenge on the Turks and tear down the Ottoman Empire. Bill says the Ottomans were already collapsing. His opinion. Maybe. Maybe not.
No man or leader is perfect and war has often strange outcomes and battles won or lost. For MILLENIA. But mankind are hunter gatherers jealous and covetous and warriors. We are who we are. We are not alone in the animal kingdom btw.
I admire Churchill immensely. He married an American who was devoted to him. Instead of Gallipoli Bill should focus on Yalta and how a DYING (Cancer, not well known) FDR LOCKED CHURCHILL IN HIS ROOM, with cigars and booze and FDR negotiated with his team the LONG TERM STRATEGY AND END TO WW2 in JAPAN, how to deal with Mao and Indo China and Korea and Truman signed off because he was rather racist and disliked Gen. Stalin ate Truman's lunch.
I dont know where we are headed for certain but take the odds we are winning in Iran despite media misinformation, and winning big and will soon be over. What happens next in Iran is up to the People once Trump gives the all clear to go into the streets and decide for themselves. Hopefully we armed with American guns. And ammo to FIRE BACK AT ANY STRAGGLERS FROM THE ISLAMIST REGIME.
An interesting take on matters, some I agree, some not. 2 things jump out at me though:
1. Men and Empires don't fall because of weakness, they fall because they overextend. This is as sure as night follows day as new conquest is required ro sustain the Empire. Hubris will bring down the American Empire like all the others.
2. I struggle to find a way of defining "winning" this so called war. Iran is like an ants nest. Unless you kill them all, they'll come back, and they'll be mad as hell. Sure, America/Israel will "win" the kinetic battle, but what happens next...? Containment of Iran, laudable, maybe necessary? Increase in terrorism globally, almost certainly.
Thanks for that. Well, its easy to opine in generalities on historical references about Empires that fell....and whether we are an Empire a Republic or something in between or if Trump has changed what and who we are. Everyone has an opinion. Some are wildly supportive and sycophants. Some sanguine, supportive but also arms length like me, and some are Trump haters regardless (Bonner despite his faux claims of objectivity). I remember the Reagan years well. Enough after 47 years of terrorism, and genocide and plotting, scheming, assassination attempts, lying and building a bomb. Plus missiles galore we are finding out they had more missiles than thought. BUT in all wars a lot happens that is unexpected. The war is going exceedingly well. We have fewer than 25 casualties. We have decapitated down THREE LEVELS of the Regime and are working on the IRGC as we speak, the last vestiges of the evil regime. Does Trump have Hubris? Sure. Who in politics doesnt? or shouldnt? Not electing a POPE or SAINT or COMMITTEE OF RABBITS.
My two cents. Disagree? Fine. Free Speech begets Free thoughts.
I dont really see the point of these essays any more - the american public is sooo brainwashed - it beggars belief - they wouldnt even know whats true even if it hit them in the faces!! And these financial news letter writers cant see past their own noses. We had Al;exander Green of Oxford Club telling us that the killing of Khameniei was a "win-win". Does he still think that now the US has been dragged into Netanyahu's war, the WTI Oil is $96 (despite Scott Bessents efforts to short it to keep the price down), 10 year yield is going to clear 4.5%. Does that knob still think this is a win-win? NO Rational person would have said this is a win-win.
A weaker U.S. dollar, resulting from such interventions, can make U.S. exports cheaper and more attractive to foreign buyers, potentially boosting sales and profits for American companies.
Please explain how this "creates' more terrorists...
A Treasury-ordered rate check for the USD/JPY currency pair can reduce the dollar index by signaling potential intervention to weaken the dollar against the yen, which can lead to broader dollar depreciation as traders anticipate and react to this move. This action implies the U.S. government may be working to support the Japanese yen, which can cause investors to sell the dollar across other currency pairs, thereby lowering the overall dollar index.
Yeah, missiles that Iran lied about not having - and leftists believed - reaching Diego Garcia. Totally capable of reaching deep into Europe (perhaps even targeting one of Bonner’s places.) Only a blind fool believes that once Iran has a nuclear weapon, they won’t hesitate to use it.
You can’t negotiate rationally with a regime that is irrational by civilized standards. We could negotiate arms treaties with the Soviet Union (cheats, notwithstanding) because they wanted to survive. Not so with the ayatollahs, mullahs, and assorted imams of Iran. They cherish death and martyrdom…well, not they THEMSELVES, just the idiot muslims that buy into the BS.
Mr. Sluggo, That’s the $64,000 question. Just how crazy are the mullahs? I struggle with coming up with a definitive answer. You’re correct that they’re members in good standing of the very radical portion of Muslim believers, who don’t seem to care if they die, per their public statements. But would the mullahs want to seriously hurt the majority of Muslims who are more moderate by firing off a nuclear weapon at Israel or trying to detonate one in the U.S.? I mean Iran and the mullahs would be nuclear waste---AND the rage at Muslims around the world would be enormous and would last a very long time.
This is something Bill might want to address rather than act like these radical Muslims are somehow innocent children just minding their own business while treating their people well.
I only read Bill about once a week, like today, because he is not remotely the man he used to be as early as two or three years ago. For example, he wrote today that the Iraq War cost the U.S. about $5 trillion, as if it was wasted. The old Bill would not have written this, knowing that the lion’s share of war money is spent here in the U.S., cycling through the economy. There were many millions of defense jobs created or sustained by the trillions in this spending---and via IOUs/borrowing; and, this continues, unfortunately, to present day. Is this the best way to spend money; that is, build true wealth? Of course not. But most of the money is not remotely wasted. And this from a man, Bill Bonner, who likes to jump on any bombast uttered by Pres. Trump. Talk about the pot calling the kettle black. And there are other inaccuracies from Bill today that I could jump on, but I don’t want to write a book no one would read.
Will as usual Bill I very much enjoyed the comparative history lesson. You know your names, dates and historical precedents. But as you have always said, history does not repeat rather it rhymes. The present rhyme is still sounding it way through history, what do you say we wait to see how it settles before we draw conclusions?
The mission in Iran is already over. We blew up everything that they had spent the money on that Obama/Biden had given them. We have kept our own casualties and civilians to as low as possible. They are throwing paper airplanes up in the air and sometimes they hit their neighbors. I would just declare victory, wait three months to see if Johnny wants to behave when he comes off the stool in the corner. If he doesn't, we do it again based on all of the mapping and intelligence we gather when they come out of their burrows. And the next time the EU asks the United States for help, I would tell them that I will think about it after I finish this cigar.
Well Bill thanks for being clearly one sided. You have deliberated overlooked that the Iranians said they had over 460kg of 60% enriched uranium, that not our intel, it's their statements. To be certain your response would be it was a bluff, maybe yes or maybe no. Those same people clearly were enriching uranium, and it wasn't for utility purposes as we offered to provide them all of the utility grade uranium they needed or wanted, why not, maybe part of the bluff, however you chose to ignore their statements. When they returned to their home in Iran the sounded the same alarm that they would achieve nuclear weaponry. Bluff maybe! they may have thought they were dealing with the genius and brilliant negotiators of team Obama and Biden. Thus result in the US giving them Billions to "please don't do that" or as Biden would say "Don't".
I suppose Bill might either say there was no threat, perhaps for a short window of time, but their use of missiles and drones clearly points to another conclusion, which has been cleverly or deliberately ignored, as their plan was to build so much fire power they could never be defeated, the evidence is they got close. So... even if they didn't have nukes although the information points to the contrary, they clearly had and still have a lot of fire power that could have been used to attack Europe and not far from there the US. Clearly, they had the fire power to close the strait of Hormuz and brought the same world economic scenario we are witnessing. It is simply undeniable with this regime they weren't building up armament to celebrate the 4th of July, but to take total control of the mid-east. While you love to spout history as I can as well, you seem to forget the Persians and the Arabs have no lost affection for one another, you might remember the Iraq and Iran War as an example.
Yes Bill you could be like the leaders of the past who watched Hitler, you too could be a modern-day Chamberlain with others and say just like Biden, "Don't". Maybe you were right maybe you weren't, maybe they weren't a real threat, but look at what is happening today and regardless of who is at the leadership of the US or Europe, you cannot say they were not a world threat as they could have crippled the world economy and evidentially have everyone entered into another world war disaster, what say you Chamberlian, pardon Bill, "Don't".
It may or may not end well for us. It isn't the current administration that got us here. Neither does it mean that the timing was precise and correct. And maybe we are well overspent in debt. This should have been stopped years ago. You act as if these people have not inflicted or attempted to inflict harm to the US. They have killed over 1000 of our servicemen and women together with others in their terrorist acts. Oh...and don't forget they attempted to assassinate Trump, I believe that is an act of war. I would have also been enraged if they threatened Obama or Biden, they were still our presidents and leaders.
I tell you, President Trump, he seems like a nice fella, not very good at, you know, anything involving consequences, but nice.
President Trump is the only man who can look at a five-thousand-year history of “this doesn’t work” and say, “Yeah, but what if I do it louder?” He never studied history, but he’s weaponizing confusion by taking a timeline, shaming it like a cheap snow globe, and saying, “Close enough, send the troops.”
He treats war like a limited-time offer. “Act now! Supplies of common sense are already gone!”
Dragging the US into conflict on “trumped up charges,” which is ironic, because the only thing more inflated than the charges is his ego. The man couldn’t find a stable outcome with GPS and divine intervention, and he’s out there comparing himself to legends like he’s browsing identities at a thrift store. “We’re not dealing with Churchill,” he says. Yeah, no kidding pal, Churchill at least knew which war he was in. Trump thinks Gallipoli is a new Italian appetizer.
And then, oh, this is my favorite part, he invites allies after everything goes sideways. That’s like setting your house on fire and then texting your neighbors, “Hey, quick favor, bring marshmallows.”
Mission accomplished? Yeah… if the mission was to turn strategy into abstract art.
One mans win-win is another's absurdity... Bill's musings will change nothing it offers him a platform to connect dots that will not change the price of tea in China, it gives his dear readers a glimpse of our eminent demise from the dots he chooses to define our route. Oh I love the past, what could have been if the dots I didn't connect were only connected.I take none of this conflict lightly but be it wishful thinking or how the dots got this soon to be 74 year old to a point where Bills dots, histories dots are not how or why we got here but a reality of the life we live. If you have time Bill could you connect the dots that make a Schumer, Pelosi, Durbin, Jeffries, Booker, Sanders, Harris, Newsom, Obama, AOC. Shake things up a little, I might understand this dot thing better if we focus on how these buffoons became a dot... they would all say fuck the dots, fuck you, could you connect those dots? All the best Billy B. AC
Well, the TDS crap is getting very tiresome. I get useful information from Tom and Dan, but Bill, I don’t even read any more. I believe Trump is right with Iran and fanatic Islam. All they needed is one nuclear weapon set off 250 to 300 miles above our country to put us back to 1850s technology, which means no electricity of any kind. If your phone dies and your car won’t start, it’s happened and the grid will be down for many years. Gloom and doom, maybe, but are you willing to bet your and your families lives on it. It only takes ONE. The electromagnetic pulse kills it all. I’ve read multiple reports that claim that 90% of us would be dead in 90 days. Don’t take my word for it, do some research. Even fictional books are written with that as the theme. I recently read one by Bobby Akart, Silent Night. It’s chilling but it could happen. Just sit down and think, what would be affected when we lose electricity? Are you prepared?
Tom, Angry’s comment about trade is so far off-target it shouldn’t require explanation. This is not about trade.; it’s about the collapse of the two pariah/terrorist states in the world, Israel and Israel-led (Trump’s USA!) deservedly friendless but somehow blackmailed by the murderous Israelis who see every negative comment or rational explanation as an opportunity to do battle as they did in Jericho. To wit: 1) their 70-year concentration/torture/prison camp, Gaza; 2) their arrogant US-approved take-over of the West Bank; purposefully created chaos and targeted assassinations in 3) Syria, 4) Iraq, 5) Lebanon, bribed control of the political system of 6) USA and 7) attempted beheading of their pending Waterloo: the 90 million ancient and subdued, but now awakened, Persian Empire, which now holds all the cards, including the support of the other 170 nations on the planet, 60% of the US electorate, ultimate control of the artificial Arab neighbor “states”, and cheap weaponry capable of eventually turning Tel Aviv and Haifa into 21st century Jerichos!
If 5-time draft dodger, DJT, foolishly decides to duke it out, yes, Iran will suffer massive losses. It will also unite most of its diverse population and become capable of overwhelming the exhausted IDF (exhausted just be by bombing, killing and raping an unarmed prison population, no less). It (Iran) has already proven its ability to change leadership not only in the last month but during the last 36,000 months. It’s two lone enemies’ ‘leaderships” are both on the verge of being replaced. US exports of goods and services are already being rejected and substituted thanks to Angry’s hero, Trump. China, in a matter of months observing his arrogance increased its exports from $900+ million to $1.2 trillion while US farmers and manufacturers went bankrupt.
Not sure comparing the follies of WWI is at all analogous to today's Iranian nuclear threat.
Blocking a waterway vs threatening to "nuke" major cities are two entirely different problems.
Those that do not agree Iran should be curbed...
Should inform the rest of us how to proceed when Iran does obtain "the bomb".
Spot ON !!!!! We are at a different level compared to the historical events presented today. I sincerely hope / pray that the outcome is better. How about Israel's hundreds of "bombs"? Those really worry me!
I think the world community should find a way to remove those.
... ever see the infamous building mural in which the U.S. flag's stripes turn into bombs, stars are replaced by skulls, and centered in this derision are large black capital letters; "DOWN WITH THE U.S.A."
The theme is ubiquitous in Iran.
Not Israel.
I think you need not worry... unless Iran wins.
Unlike you I can handle those “mean” sentiments snowflake!
What do you expect after all the trauma we have inflicted on that nation!
If you were Iranian you’d hate the US too!

You are so right!
Iranian hates the U.S.
Seems Iran and the U.S. both have dirty hands... and disparate ideologies.

Do you forget...
Islamists consider infidels 2nd class citizens.
As a Christian I will never be accepted as an equal and will always be repressed by Muslim culture.

Seemingly a Muslim can worship and engage wherever he chooses, in any country.
But a Christian had better heed to Islamic rules...
-
It is apparent you don't take the Iranian threats seriously....

To each his own I suppose!
By the way did you know that Iran is home to the largest Jewish population in the Middle East outside of Israel.

They don't seem to be oppressed by those nasty "Islamists" you sneeringly refer to.
Maybe you should broaden your sources of information beyond "Hannity" every now and then Angry Icebergs?

I believe what Iran tells me.
Don't you?

To ensure their "religion of peace" endures and propagates;
Iran has spent heavily in arms and weaponry.
Muslims make no quarrel; they do not accept infidels as equals.
Iran made it clear they want to "eliminate" my Christian culture.
I do not hear the same from Zionists.
-
Please refrain from using the "we're the only ones that ever used a nuke" quip.
Don't you think the Nazi' would have?
The Imperial Army would have?
The CCCP (in 1944)?
The Red Army?
They all would have and likely dropped more than just two.
Times were different...
The Imperial Japanese Army were rightfully viewed by the U.S. military as enemy, not humans.
U.S. military knew invading Japan would cost more lives on both sides.
The U.S. fire-bombing raids killed more Japanese civilians than both bombs combined.
Even after dropping both bombs, the Imperial Army did not surrender!

And I read today the secretary of the treasury ordered a rate check for the USD/JPY currency pair.
They are creating more terrorists than they can kill.
A weaker U.S. dollar, resulting from such interventions, can make U.S. exports cheaper and more attractive to foreign buyers, potentially boosting sales and profits for American companies.
Please explain how this "creates' more terrorists...
The last i looked the US dollar is Going UP.
I had the same notion, but Ai tells me:
A Treasury-ordered rate check for the USD/JPY currency pair can reduce the dollar index by signaling potential intervention to weaken the dollar against the yen, which can lead to broader dollar depreciation as traders anticipate and react to this move. This action implies the U.S. government may be working to support the Japanese yen, which can cause investors to sell the dollar across other currency pairs, thereby lowering the overall dollar index.

Interesting...precious metal/commodities stocks might be in play then. Just looked, and the precious metals stocks are catching a bid today.
Bill is correct with the history he quoted. The big difference today, we are not dealing with bows and arrows. Don't sell your gold.
Jim Marshall
Bill,
I very much appreciate your commentary. As always, thanks for providing a historical perspective.
AC
Bill never stops speaking truth!
God bless!
More historical framings always a good idea!
thanks ddes

Brian, could you be just around bit more specific?
A great one, Ed, my sentiments exactly.
100% agree with both Ed and Pat.
Thank you Ed! Spot on.
Gallipoli is like Gettysburg; if only Stonewall Jackson had been there to lead the charge of Little Round Top, history would have changed.
It was Churchill’s plan; it was a disaster. It was not a disastrous plan; the execution of the plan by the admirals and generals was the disaster.
Churchill was responsible for the idiocy of WW1 which led to the slaughter of WW2 and the demise of the Empire he loved.
Iran is more like Napoleon’s invasion of Russia; overwhelming force meets ragged determination.
