Joel, a great comparison of different mindsets. In a way, the Argentines are lucky. An inflating currency is direct evidence of a government that will cheat and lie to its citizens. They have already learned not to trust the government and have adapted. The Europeans, on the other hand, are willingly and happily being led into the “digital slaughterhouse” that Jim Rickards has described.

Here in the good ‘ol USA, I have well to do friends that scoff at cash and don’t carry any, or keep any on hand. When asked about “emergencies”, like power or internet outages, I get a blank look. And these are folks that are otherwise intelligent and old enough to remember the world “pre-digital”. To me, it’s incomprehensible.

While I also use plastic, I shudder to think that Americans will follow their European cousins into that slaughterhouse, especially with the recent examples from Canada and right here at home. But we probably will. Part of me is almost hoping for a cyber war, if only for a well needed reality check.

Joel, Fascinating comments on your travels. The International perspective from Ireland, Norway, Argentina and Wyoming is much more valuable than anything that comes out of U.S. media. Yesterday, our Uber driver was a young Argentinian girl now two years here in Florida. She was lucky to find a husband at home who has an education in technology and it has been a lifeboat for all her relatives back in Argentina. I questioned her about how they got along back home and she said something about government health. Maybe you can talk more about what they do. Meanwhile I paid nearly $1,600 for a radiator and air conditioning parts and labor.

Buy an electric car...there are many choices.

Not buying cars any time soon. I did have a Nissan Leaf some years ago. At our place in life it's Nissan Cube, bicycles and Uber.

Yeah. That'll fix it. Then go by a $22k Tesla replacement battery. Leftists have all the answers

Hi Gary. I'm Swiss as to left-right politics. A pox on both houses. No question that the current political fools are leading us off the cliff, but what can you do? I just try not to be stupid. We've been on this path for a long time.. I like Bonner because they focus on what we can do to defend our assets. No get rich schemes, no B.S., doing their best to, as Bill always says, connect the dots. Reading deep history helps keep my mind in perspective. Society has been here many times. Change the names and dates, and it's the Peons v. the Elites. Good luck with staying cool.

It may not fix it, but it might help for 200,000 miles. By then who knows? New battery technology will continue to advance. By the way, I'm not a leftist. Your assumptions are way off.

Dorothy, I am by no means a Luddite, and major technological and social transitions are very hard on the human psyche. All through history, societies and ideas have changed, the important thing for most us us is to know how to protect our families and ourselves from the ravishes of change. I think of the Native Americans, the Catholics, the Blacks, the Irish, the Germans, the Mornons, the Middle easterners who came to America. They all endured and endure the difficulties of following their traditions. My philosophy is that we all should develop patience and respect for one another. I've been a genealogist/family historian for nearly 50 years. The one thing we have all shared is coping with life. I wish you well.

We must fight against this Marxist system of societal control. No one seems to think about the possibility of an EMP over America by some jihadi or Russian sponsored group. Your lovely internet, electricity and everything that depends on it would go away in an instant. That is when people that understand the old ways will survive and the other 90% will starve to death within one month.

What the f*ck you know about the M. system, stupid. Of course I am not on the M. side.

Actually quite a lot, given that I have traveled to China many times and am very aware of their social credit scoring and the absolute inability of the average citizen to speak freely like you just have with your rude comments. See if you spoke in that way about what is transpiring in society in China you would be "disappeared". What many people in this country do not realize is that China has so thoroughly infiltrated our universities, media and government that we can no longer pull our heads up and see what is actually occurring to our democratic process. If you study Marxism in any detail you will see that through organizations like BLM and other woke ideology they seek to sow dissent among the citizens to the point that they are fighting with each other similar to what happened between Nazi's and communists within Germany prior to WWII. The end game of any extreme group is to tear up our Constitution on public television. It was only because of a bunch of brown shirt bullies that the Nazi's took over. Very unfortunate of course, as we all suffered due to this insanity. However, it could have gone just as badly under a Communist regime and I would argue for the people of Eastern Europe, it did. Every extreme of right or left is riddled with a history of disaster. So, let's maintain some modicum of respect in our dialogue and work through things via compromise, vs. vitriol.

Joel,I agree with Mark, that the Argentines are way ahead of the people here in the U.S.A..They know their government is corrupt and live accordingly. In the U.S. we are in Lockdown again because of inflation prices and supply chain disruptions, just smart lemmings marching off the cliff. Thanks for this article on your travels.

Dear Bill,

I first became aware of you when we were both starting out in political activities. I was a strong Democrat and you were the head of the Taxpayers Association. Interestingly, I was a strong advocate of a strong, gold backed dollar and a card carrying member of several conservative money organizations such as yours and Peter Peterson's with his debt clock. That made it possible for me to sit down with both strong money conservatives and extreme liberals with equal ease. It has been of great benefit all my life, because I was able to get many Democrats, Republicans, Libertarians, and others to sit down together as friends and discuss politics. For the last sixteen years, I have had breakfast with people of all persuasions to work out political issues like sensible neighbors and honest politicians. Now we are both as old as we feel and still going. I have absolutely loved to follow your newsletters and writings about your family, travels, ideas, and Argentina. I came to love Elizabeth, Maria, and Will and looked forward to hearing from them or about them.

Sometimes you are wrong about an issue, such as the climate issue. Let me just say that I am old enough to remember the terrible air quality problems many places such as California, Birmingham, Alabama and others had due to such things as auto exhaust and other man-made reasons. Thank goodness for the people who fought for clean air.

I am also concerned about the new spotted horse that threw Elizabeth over its head on your South American ranch. I know that must have really hurt her. Please give her my sincere sympathy and hope that it will not happen again. It sounds like the horse has a problem with what is called "Kissing Spine." It can be cured with a simple operation and time to recuperate. What has happened regarding Maria's acting career? I hoped everything would work out for her, but we haven't heard anything for a long time.

Finally, let me say that the country --world-- is in such an insane financial condition that I hardly make any trades now. I am reasonably comfortable, so why should I trouble myself with so many new things I don't understand about the market?

In BsAs the law of bad money putting good money out of circulation works perfectly. What a speed of money! If the government doesn't help you you better help yourself.

I love your writing and ability to say the same thing every day. Don’t get mad but Tom Friedman does the same but is less entertaining. Do you ever get tired of it all and want to write about the ranch or love or life or quelle horreur admit that economically speaking Europe is even worse shape than the US especially France?
