The US literally can't afford to default on its debt. If it did, then to attract buyers for its future debt, it would have to raise interest rates. And it would likely have to buy back its defaulted debt perhaps at a discount.
The major fallout would be the loss of the dollar as the Reserve Currency (killing the attractiveness of US debt) and the collapse of a vast array of Federal programs thanks to the money that once funded them being directed to pay the new, larger and more costly National Debt
