Bill, your logic is a bit tortured. What you are skipping over is that it was Russia that invaded Ukraine for no justifiable reason. And that the deaths on the Russian side are soldiers who invaded a sovereign land, whereas the Ukrainian deaths being mourned are civilians, including children, killed by apparently targeted Russian strikes. Plus, giving examples such as China, India and Mexico is not impressive from an ethical perspective.

Both Donetsk and Lugansk had voted for independence from Ukraine in 2014 after a U.S.-backed coup overthrew the democratically elected president Viktor Yanukovych. The new, U.S.-installed Ukrainian government then launched a war against the provinces to crush their resistance to the coup and their bid for independence, a war that is still going on eight years later at the cost of thousands of lives with U.S. support. It is this war that Russia has entered.

No. Don't you find it odd that there has been zero diplomacy from the West? No to NATO and no more killing of Russian speaking Ukrainians in the Donbas Region seems like a good alternative to having your entire country leveled. Let's be honest, the West can care less for the Ukrainian people. If they cared, they would have resorted to diplomacy prior to Putin's invasion. They had their opportunity and they purposely ignored it.

Read up on History from an accurate unbiassed HISTORIAN. How as you claim, has the USA saved Aus from CHINA. I haven't witnessed any conflict unless you believe different views constitutes war. As for the Second World War, I think you should observe USA's history in that War from which it made billions of Dollars on each occasion - the price of war. The USA entered the Second World war when Pearl Harbor was bombed and not before. Australia, per capita, committed huge personnel ie numbers to both wars yet entered at both outbreaks. No adverse impacts drew us into these two wars. Aus experienced no landings on its shores from the first WW and several years elapsed before any impact on Australian shores in the Second WW. The USA learnt a very valuable lesson the second time around which was simply if you go to War don't arrive late on the scene and fight on any land but not on USA soil. Every time Australia was called on by the USA we stepped up to the plate and I reject your blinded comments about the USA being the Be all and end all of the World. What world are you talking about because countries like Russia and China and there are many others who certainly don't share you biased view. Look what transpired with "weapons of mass destruction" which drew Aus into a falsely premised war which even your ex General Colin Powell (his political rank I don't readily recall) said " he would have to live with that decision for the rest of his days" I do admire Powell because he wears the ticks and the crosses like a man of honor. Many USA lives were lost including those of its allies - Australians among them. Again its obvious to me and I am sure others you are blinded by the king of Trumps. I'll let historians eventually rule on Trump tri-umps and failures but if I'm not mistaken at his urgings many of his supporters committed high treason when they stormed the White House. God forbid Australia ever elects such a person whose only claim to real success was his golfing game improved while he was the absentee president of America. I reassure those who may read this, will accept I caste my vote in any election on who will deliver for the greater good of Australians and in the wider sense for the greater good of Mankind.

I visited Melbourne and Perth in the late 1950's while in the Navy. The best Country I have ever visited. The beer was outstanding. The people were loving and likeable. The dialect was a little hard to get used to. I was there nine days, with Shore leave every day from 0900 to 0800 the next day. It was Summer there. I was there from Dec. 27 thru Jan. 6. The Australian people would call the ship every morning and ask them to send 4 or 5 'Yanks' to X address for a party. The first day my friend and I went sightseeing at the Beach. A young lady took us in tow, and I asked her where I could get a cup of coffee. She took us to a Milk Bar. My first exposure to Expresso. After leaving Hawaii, we were not allowed to have US Money. We were paid in script: Military Pay Coupon, MPC. I exchanged $20. MPC for Australian Currency. When I left, I changed my money back to MPC. I received $19.00 MPC. No one would let us spend any money! Women 'trained' to Melbourne from I don't know where. The second day my friend and I went sight-seeing downtown Melbourne. A cab came by and stopped. A shipmate said get in we're going to a party. We went to a residence in East Malvern. That's where I spent the next seven days and nights.

I said all that to get a point across. At that time Australians loved America, the USA. I have read someplace that at that time Australia was the only Country that loved the USA, because the rest of the Countries all owed money to the USA. You are a Historian. I will let you find out if that was true or false. Just Saying! Florida Jimmy.

Hi Jimmy, I'm a Melbournian and appreciate you kind words on you Australian experience. We believe in Democracy as does your country. Wars come at a human cost to both sides but my guess is the greatest cost is to the defender not the aggressor. Ukraine is an example as are most who fight/defend for just causes. I'm sure we borrowed from the USA in the second world war and likely the first as well. I have never researched the topic. My only comment is that be careful who you sell product that do you harm. In short, there are countries who should never be supplied no matter what the profit. When Europe in particular becomes so dependent on Russia, the very country they have concerns about, then to a large extent they should blame those that made such decisions. We in Aus have made mistakes. One instance - our trade reliance on China. There should be less reliance on profit and more on fostering relationships with like minded nations. If this was the case the trade sanctions on Russia would impact and not rebound on the citizens of America. We are by no means a big populace but we can and have punched above our weight when it comes to world conflict. Out ties with the USA are strong and will remain that way. We in Aus should never forget our origins when the Brits arrived and dumped their convicts on these shores completely ignoring the first Australians. We share historical similarities with our USA cousins and both made tragic mistakes towards our indigenous brothers. My son in law is an American who lives in Aus and has been very successful because he was welcomed and put his shoulder to the wheel. Let our two nations be exemplary in the way we solve the issues facing the world which in my view is emphatically Climate Change.

Awright, PG V, I gotta' chime in here!

Americans are "Defenders of Freedom and protectors of human rights?!" Try telling that to any black American! How about the Native Americans? Or the LGBTQ "community." You must be thinking of a different America than the one I know!

Every red state in America has been going Hell-bent to deny voting rights to blacks and hispanics. America as a whole has fuc*ed-over the Native Americans since day one. This is THEIR land! They were here, first! Yet, even today -- after America slaughtered millions of Native Americans in their attempted genocide and tried to destroy their languages and cultures by stealing their children from them and imprisoning them in their "residential schools" where they were raped, beaten and murdered -- Federal, State and local governments, in conjunction with farming, ranching, and corporate interests are STILL screwing the Native Americans. And, regardless of whether you're pro-LGBTQ or anti-LGBTQ, they are PEOPLE! They are human beings and children of God! If they are to be judged, it is God who will judge them, not the fuc*ing Republicans!

I understand that you're one of those "America, my country, right or wrong" types, and anyone who disagrees with you, you label as an America Hater. So be it. But, you also fancy yourself a student of history. So, why the hell don't you look at the history of race relations in America and how America has treated gays, lesbians, etc. before you spout off some nonsense about America being "Defenders of Freedom" and "protectors of human rights?!" The only people whose freedom and human rights America protects is white-skinned, Christian, heterosexuals. Everyone else can go get fuc*ked, because that's the "American Way!"

I agree with you most of the time. Ukraine and Russia War is not like Vietnam. The French finally gave up and left and LBJ put us in there. We had no business taking over from the French. The way I see it, it was a Civil War between North and South: with China backing up the North.

I have oodles of Vietnamese friends. I even attended a Vietnamese CMA Church that met in my Church Building after we finished our Service. They were even trying to teach me the language. I would defend any one of our Vietnamese people in the USA. Plus, they are really good at doing what they do.

We had no business in that War.

Ukraine and Russia are a different situation. Ukraine and it's breakaway Southern and Eastern cities or districts or whatever, may have been a Civil War because they were part of the Ukraine Nation. Russia recognizing part of Ukraine as Sovereign Nations does not give them the right to attack Ukraine and commit the terrible atrocities they have done there. In the case of RUSSIA, a Sovereign nation attacking UKRAINE, a Sovereign nation is a War. If Russia is not stopped there, I believe they will continue on to the West and the North. I do not support boots on the ground in Ukraine by us or NATO. I do support us and NATO supporting Ukraine with military assistance and refugee assistance. The Atomic Scientists Doomsday Clock was 2 minutes till MIDNIGHT in 2021. It is 100 seconds till MIDNIGHT now: that's 1 minute and 40 seconds. What is Madman Putin and Rocket-man going to do then? Sorry to hear about Carlos. The cattle rustling, encroachment, etc. It might be time to call in a Clint Eastwood Spaghetti Western type gunslinger.

On the Russian front, USA proves there's nothing dumber than getting involved in foreign entanglements. Ukraine upon independence from the former USSR democratically elected a pro Russian government. Russia took of the duty of running the welfare state that is an independent Ukraine. In comes the CIA funding a Fascist (yes their flag is emblazoned with a swastika) militia staging a coup the result is a pro USA government. With this brilliant move USA takes over the cost of funding what has been designated the most corrupt government in the world.

Harken back to the Ukrainian people it seems genetically they share all the same DNA as Russians. On the surface this makes sense because Ukraine translates to Border Land.

I'm no Putin supporter but it makes sense to understand what one is getting involved with before plastering the Ukrainian flag on one's FB profile or on the bumper of one's vehicle. As Americans we love to route for the underdog even when they are dogs of sorts.

From Putins perspective the USSR was Russia as such promise made by the West should still be observed. Ronald Reagan's famous "ear down this wall" speech sounded great but behind the scenes it was not mentioned the USSR allowed Germany to reunite because America promised not to add any Eastern nations to NATO.

This is how government works in USA the president is held up as a hero when in fact most times the problem solved was created by the USA to start with. The Cuban Missile crisis was not started or ended because Kennedy was tough on the Russians but because he agreed to remove the nukes we set up in Turkey if they removed the nukes they set up in Cuba in response.

Sadly for USA we have already set the ground work for WW3 this time around there's not going to be any restraint everyone has nukes and most would have no compulsion using them on USA because we are the bully all over the world.

Media is amazing Trump had most of the nation believing the media is mostly fake news and yet the very same people now believe CNN, MSNBC, etc and every news reel from Ukraine is truth.

Russia has a good reason to invade Ukraine it was never a independent nation in all of history save for a couple months after WW1. It is the border lands of Russian and always has been. Nato was created as a deterrent to Russian communist expansion. Nato was still born when the USSR dissolved. What better why to stage a war and a great reset then create a pro USA government in the borderland of Russia and then station Nato troops on the border. This would be akin to Canada electing a pro Russian government and stationing Russian troops on our Northern border.
