The fastest path to a gold standard would be a comprehensive audit of the Federal Reserve. We all know what happened to the short-lived audit the Fed movement. Our overlords told us there's national security issues buried within the Federal Reserve. Absolutely; we can't have the Plebs finding out exactly how their ox is being gored. The sad pathetic fact of the matter is that the Plebs simply couldn't handle the truth. Luckily for the Plebs, we've already crossed the Rubicon. There's no fixing this mess; only delaying the inevitable. Only one way out and that's secession :-)

Knox vault containing what appeared to be gold bars. The government fights tooth and nail to keep everything about the gold supply secret, suggesting that they may have much less gold than advertised.
Weren’t some people put in jail after the Great Depression? When revolution happened in Cambodia, weren’t the educated mainly targeted? I think we are “nicer” here in America to those we call criminals, but after reading the first bit of “A Modest Theory of Civilization Win-Win or Lose”, I’m not so sure it will last through what is coming. People don’t forget who caused their grand daughter to go hungry or die from a collapsed financial system and fallout that entails. I wouldn’t want to be a high and mighty government rear echelon person pointed out in a bread line down the road the US is on.

Bill sadly America 'exported' this perversion of democracy to most of its western allies and now we all have to find a pathway back to ethical/moral financial government .. I wonder if we can? most of the non-aligned countries do NOT hate 'American People' .. they just hate the duplicity/hypocrisy of our elected representatives and the perversion we send down the TV highways of the world .. sadly they have neither the means nor the power to change their trajectory .. I wonder if we can?
I think you have made the problem quite clear. My nature is to address and offer solutions. I will and have been writing some thoughts of mine. I wish i had your abilities to write. I don't but will try to express my views. Defining right from wrong is lacking. How much money or being elected which results in money rules. History does not support this. It will end without change. When?

We can’t peg the dollar to gold. Foreigners would just drain all our physical gold. Then we would have worthless paper and NO GOLD.
