WOW, Bill, Five whole dollars. Aren’t you the generous one. He should be able to get a hot cup of coffee to help him warm up his cold bones. Maybe someone who isn’t a multi-millionaire will pony up enough for the guy to get a hot meal as well.

Well, its unfortnate that we are more and more heading toward a cashless society.

A toast perhaps?

It wasn’t a long fight. It was a long capitulation. The founders set up a system that endured for as long as it did because it was genius. But American’s never fought to preserve it. They let America’s enemies take every strategic advantage. Right minded Americans eschewed politics and went to work and enjoyed the civil society that the wise had created for them. They never understood that it needed tending, that if ignored it would rot and sink like an aging house ignored. No one should wonder what happened. It wasn’t a fight lost. It was a fight never fought.

Your Right Brien, Benjamin Franklin told us we had to keep the republic.

"The Articles of Confederation were ditched in favor of a strong central government."

And that marked the end of what was a promising beginning.

I don't agree with much of your politics but this is an exception. WE have truly lost freedom under the guise of state security. They have their hand in every aspect of life, it must end.

We all have more in common than we are led to believe regardless of political parties.

Bill I always appreciate your writings. I do think you might be premature in giving in to the beast. "But who today still laments the ‘unwarranted invasion’ by the federal authorities into every aspect of our lives?"

I am one and you have some others around you.

"The War Between the States closed the door; there would be no escape."

And yet still today Lincoln is celebrated as one of our greatest presidents when he was in fact a treacherous tyrant.

Bill's given us another chapter in "Empires End."

More: When Trump denied landing rights to the President of Taiwan recently, it helped explain why she is now looking to Xi for succor.

And now that Canada is selling to China the natural gas that it once sold to the US, Trump delivers another cost of living bump to us, a perverse Christmas present. What a guy.

Speaking of unwarranted government invasion into our lives has anyone seen this secret list NSPM-7 of domestic terrorists? Just think of the possibilities, no matter which team is in power the government can add your name to the list because they found one of your social media posts to be threatening. Tell me again what was the purpose of the Revolutionary War?

This article has nothing to do with economics. This does not help me on how to keep my hard earned funds. I do have a quotation I heard many years ago.

“When people give up freedom for security, eventually they lose both, freedom and security”

Marry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah and Happy New Year to all of you, including Bill Bonner and family. Hopefully, next year more economics and less B.S.

Abe -- Thanks for the festive greeting

Re: your remarks about today's article: Bill crafts opinions. Sometime they have to do with economics; sometimes not. I enjoy reading whatever he writes.

His partners,Tom Dyson and Dan Denning, provide the financial advice. If you don't subscribe to their missives, you're doing yourself a disservice

Spot on. It’s time to defund the bankrupt warmongering central government and let the people of each state do their own thing. Not only has generalísimo Trump done the other 190 countries of the world the favor of realizing that the USA is no longer their reliable guiding beacon, but an aimless corrupt collapsing slaveholding wannabe, maybe each individual state can come to the same realization. Thank you, Donald (and corrupt family and vacuous friends and overly-greedy corporatists) for your one contribution to all of humanity: our real freedom from tyrannical maniacs like you.

Gee, Bill. Your command of the English language (along with who knows how many others) and history is remarkable. Congratulations. I'm just one of those peons that just speaks English, and doesn't have full command of that). I do understand and speak a few phrases of French, learned while stationed in France in the 1960's. I do feel that anyone a citizen of the US, irregardless of race, creed or color should be "required" to learn to read, write and speak English well enough to function in our society. If he/she or "it" can't do that then they shouldn't be allowed to have a driver's license or a specific job that endangers other people's lives. I'm trying to be a Christian but don't believe that every citizen has to be the same. In fact it's fine with me that you are what you are born. I do believe that being born with male genitalia, makes you a male until you die, period. Also, if you have an IQ of 180 or you are filthy rich more power to you. However, if you use one of these attributes to try to make me conform to how you want me or my family to live, we have a problem. If so, I don't believe in violence to solve the problem but to use the ballet box instead. Now, if someone attempts to kill me or mine, then I have the right to use my weapons against them (as guaranteed by the constitution). Likewise, when and/or "anyone" or "group" comes to take my hunting or self protection weapons, we may very well have "another gun fight at the OK coral". So, Bill, please continue writing your beautifully written and constructed prose, for we ignorant peons that voted for Trump, instead of that wonderful Democratic noninee, Harris. Can you ever forgive us???

Hi Ken. The ballot box will not protect us from psychopaths. Washington D.C. is full of them.

So true, Bob, so true.

I suspect Mr. Bonner will continue to need to use examples from the past to shed light on the present. The politicizing and bastardization of the modern version of the world leaves very few paragons of virtue to reference. I want small government. I seek refuge in the past. I applaud individual rights and abhor the Nietzschesque like creep of AI. I recoil at ideological extremes. I still can't comprehend the reality of WWII and nuclear proliferation; two events that are not just indictments on humanity but the universe itself. All driven by competitive forces and fear of the "other". All are guilty. There are no clean hands or clear consciences. The individuals' sphere of influence does not extend beyond the line of sight. Virtue can only be found in ourselves and spread to those closest to us. The world can't be saved. There is too much hostility, too much frailty, too much ignorance, and yes, too much reliance on the "technocracy". We wait for the inevitable crash, and then try to stabilize it. Same as ever.

The first HOA spelled the end of America. Coincidentally, a good friend has moved from the people'd republic of Pennsylvania to the Fredrick, Maryland area. Rolling hills of farms and former farms, have been replaced with housing developments, planned communities where it is required to wait a full 4 seconds at each stop sign even if there's not a car in either direction for 4 block. Where speed cameras and AI have replaced traffic officers. The efficiency is beyond imagination, I would bet the entire system is a third party corporation kicking back a percentage to the local government crooks. No, I didn't receive a ticket but I did get a warning for only counting to 3.

As much as China is hated, we've allowed American government to institute the same policies in control of citizens. Real ID, phones required to access apps, Easy Pass, in Philly the birthplace of the nation pulling over to talk on the phone garners a ticket via a hidden camera. No longer are we allowed to face our accuser in court because they don't exist.

The real hero's are branded criminals. One of my tenants racked up $80,000 in moving violations. It seems he fashioned a plastic cover over his license plate. When the plastic is energized it is clear, when not it turns white. His down fall his car had something inside the car's rear windscreen, a piece of clothing, or hat. The State Police spotted the car with the white plate avoiding toll on the PA turnpike. In Philly murders and not prosecuted on the first offense but this fellow did far worse, he's cooling his heels waiting for the big day in court.

As for my friend living in the HOA he's thrilled, the association allows Christmas decorations!

His neighborhood is not for me, the idea some group of neighbors might not like theTurkey decoy on the front lawn or be bothered by an old pickup truck in the driveway or the crop of corn, or my grandkids ramshackle fort is not the part of America I want to support with my tax dollars.

Ah, once again Bongo Bill gives us one of his uplifting columns while sloshing through the sewers of our past. Nothing about those trying to return us to a Constitutional Republic based on individual rights - to Bill, they don't exist.

for once, in a while, I agree with Bill! But what can we do?
