I agree that this shaking up of world trade is messy, but it seems to me that each of your arguments has at its core the assumption that everything was perfect before the changes. It wasn’t. Bretton Woods created a system where US (we the people) paid for Europe’s defense. We had essentially the same deal with Japan. Most of your (and most every other) analysis is one sided accounting. In your case all debits. Where are the credits? In the Trump administration analysis it is all credits. Where are the debits? The truth is no one knows - yet.
Were we actually paying for Europe's defense? NATO is a great way for the MIC to sell their overpriced weapon systems. So maybe we were just filling the bank accounts of the MIC. Also, our "defense" of Europe allows us to control them. Military bases in most of their countries and Alphabet agencies working to insure their leaders march to our commands. If you dona little research on Operation Gladio you will see how deep our control is.
Yes, we were and are paying for Europe's defense. Despite m I c just look at defense spanning as a percent of g d p . Our allies have been consistently short per NATI agreement For decades. The numbers theyre giving us are probably overstated.
But why do they need to spend so much in defense when Europe internally is going down hill just like the US. Defend against what? I wish I would have saved the quote but a retired US general said at a conference in Europe before the Russian invasion that the confrontations in the region were good for business. Perhaps the MIC and NATO are just money laundering schemes - sucking up taxpayer dollars and distributing them to themselves.
Do you believe America has more control over the EU, than Israel has over America? I think Israel has us locked into a straight jacket. I agree with most of what you say. I am just curious as to your opinion. Thank you in advance.
Uh no, Mr. Avondet's statement (which is the one I replied to) was, "Most of your (and most every other) analysis is one sided accounting." The "your" in that sentence was a reference to Mr. Bonner, not the Trump administration. Competent reading comprehension is necessary to be an effective commenter on here.
Sigh, the comment I referenced was about Bonner which was also who the commenter was referring to, and who in my opinion has strong leftist/Democrat leanings.
A year ago the FED was concerned about the affordability of a new car plus insurance for the average American. Adding another 20% to the cost will only make things worse. The spiral affects voluntary unemployment because your transportation broke down and you can't afford another car. Perhaps we could take some of the money from the military industrial complex to provide a robust public transportation. I don't think the lobbyist would allow that to happen. The EU is entering a recession and doesn't have the financial wherewithal to resist the US, so they opted for time. Japan is undergoing a debt crisis and can offer NO resistance. The thyme here is kick your "friends" when they are down. If I were the Japanese, I'd close down all US operations - it would be far cheaper in the long run. It would only affect about 300000 US jobs. A much better strategy at the same cost.
Is the EU controlled by idiots or have they been bought by the US? They complied with the US sanctions of Russia for the Ukraine invasion and bought more expensive gas from the US. Then, Trump rewards them with 15% tariffs.
What amazes me is that the US has invaded Syria, Afghanistan, Iraq and Libya just this century without one sanction placed on them by the EU. Same goes with no sanctions on Israel. When will the Europeans wake up and realize they are getting screwed by the EU leadership?
This may be true regarding Netanyahu. What about years before Netanyahu where the 2 state solution would have materialized if not refused by the Palestinian authority even though they got 90% of what they wanted.
Hey Starboard, I'm not a leftard or a rightard. Where is the bullshit in the fact that Nuttyyyahoo funded Hamas and that Mossad had to know about the 10/7 attack? Israel knew where the Iranian scientists and military officials were located over 1,000 miles away but didn't know that Hamas was preparing an attack right on their border? That sounds like a great bullshit story to me.
I hear you , Cartero - though I would argue your assertion that you "don't pick sides" based on many DISQUS comments I have seen you post on ZH, and maybe GP if I recall correctly. Anyway -
I too have researched whether Netanyahu is responsible for Hamas, including the 𝙤𝙣𝙚 document/report you ALWAYS reference, as well as many others. In my opinion - the claim has not been proven, but we could argue that all day.
Let's not. Instead, let's assume he did "help" an existing band of lunatic murderers in some nefarious way for reasons only he knows. Exactly HOW DOES THAT EXCUSE the tens-of-thousands of rockets indiscriminately fired into Israel over many years, plus October 7th?
OR, assuming you are correct, can you enlighten me on the next step of how that possibly JUSTIFIES what Hamas has done to both Israel and the "Palestinian People" over the last 20+ years?
Or better yet, in light of PROVEN Hamas actions, how has the alleged Netanyahu funding helped Israel? Or are you declaring that Netanyahu is a TRAITOR to the Country he has served his entire life? If so, isn't it reasonable to assume that over all the years he has had Power, he could have done WAY more "damage" to the Country than even you allege he has??
Do you see what happens when you REFUSE to look past the Noise in search of Signal? You have to begin believing more and more unlikely and ridiculous things to edify an imagined chain-of-events - all because you so desperately want others to join you in your Hatred.
I'll wait for a reasoned response to any of these questions...
PS - I know it's "fashionable" right now to hate on Israel and blame them for everything from dumbing-down American students to Donald Trump. News Flash - eventually the WHOLE WORLD will turn against Israel, even America, and you'll get your wish. I am not an Israeliphant by any stretch, but I do notice that you and those like you shout from the rooftops whatever anti-Israel theory you have - then NONE of you take the next step. That would be, (assuming you are right) what exactly does your typically unproven assertion about the Evil of Israel mean in the grand scheme of things and how, exactly, does that fit into the verified History of Hamas' words, action and atrocities? Y'all are searching to justify your Hatred, but your stuck trying to get out of the batter's box - screaming and arm-waving that a Ball was a Strike.
Nuttyyahoo has been around since the '90s. How does are support of Israel make the lives of Americans better? If you compare a list of the countries in which Nutty said regime change was necessary in his 1995 book it's very similar to the list that General Wesley Clark was given by a Pentagon official after 9/11.
Projection is ALWAYS the first (and last) steps in their playbook. It sandwiches Deflect, Deny, Ignore. Seriously. Think about virtually ANYTHING today's dimocrats do or say, particularly when they get caught doing something they shouldn't. It is ALL carried out under the auspices outlined...
The point was the EU went along with sanctions against Russia because of the Ukraine invasion even though it's hurting their economy. But the US has invaded multiple countries just this century without one sanction imposed by the EU. Plus, Israel is bombing the hell out of Gaza without one sanction imposed by the EU. Why?
Why not answer the question? I'm not certain about anything except that the government lies to us. Why no sanctions on the US for destroying Libya but thousands of sanctions on Russia?
This in My opinion , is what happens when people become lazy and expect the good ole government to solve their problems. It is the government that caused all these problems!!!!!!!!!!
I will give You that one , it was not like it used to be . I am afraid , well not afraid, but I face what is given to Me and deal with it according to My knowledge.
Merkel's Muslim mania managed to do in a few months what the Byzantine, Sasanian, the Crusades, the Visigoths, the Ghassanids, the Frankish, the Balkan wars and countless other armies spilt blood for centuries to prevent.
Merkel also ignored Putin and shut down the nukes.
Bill makes some great points in today's missive IMO - and a lot of other points that are based purely on conjecture and worst-case outcome thinking. That's one way to live, I guess.
An alternative would be to consider the fact that Trump has opened up new markets to US goods and services all over the world, while balancing long-standing trade discriminations that went against the US in others. We are now charging foreign producers for the "right" to sell their products in America, the world's leading consumer market (by a mile.) Finally (for now), the doom and gloom over 'tariff Inflation" on the American people has yet to materialize - but boy-oh-boy are some people pining hard for it to become Reality.
The jury is still out on pretty much every point Bonner tries to make in today's missive, even though he tells us these things as though they are foregone conclusions.
At this point, they are not.
Sadly, he seems to be rooting hard for Guilty verdicts all the way down the line....
Mr. Bonner is a perfect foil that enables those of us that can think our way out of a paper sack to demonstrate to others how much of what he writes is nonsense. There's more useful information in Starboard's post above than in Bonner's entire article today.
I said "useful". SE lead with IMO "in my opinion". The vast majority of everything written on here (including by our dear Editor) is opinion. Some opinions are just better reasoned than others.
Reading books written by people with axes to grind is usually a waste of time. I chose to read books by the likes of Locke, de Tocqueville and Levin. You demonstrate your ignorance by making the statement, "I just hope democracy survives that charlatan."
Allow me to educate you. You won't find the word "democracy" anywhere in the U.S. Constitution and with good reason. Our Founding Fathers despised democracy. They were students of history and understood that democracies always devolve into rule by mob ("mobocracy"). It's government by and for the lowest common denominator. We are not a democracy, we are a constitutional representative republic. You should read some books on the subject, it will be illuminating for you.
Maybe they aren’t foregone conclusions. However, I don’t like that government is limiting my choices of where to shop. One of the main arguments for tariffs is that is will restore manufacturing. Doubt it. Even assuming EPA and OSHA regulations can be eased enough to make it a reasonable prospect, state and local jurisdictions, along with NIMBY attitudes make it very unlikely. And even if it did happen, we have so easily forgotten the days of “buy American” where we were expected to step up and by the Harley Davison that leaked oil all over our boots and garage floors, Pontiacs were literally pieces of shit, and Fords were not quite found on road dead. Tariffs protect industries, they don’t give them incentives to compete, and they take away my right buy what I want at a competitive price.
Bill, you described and explained the Devil’s Calculator perfectly: TARIFFS, a tax on us all, blue collar, white collar, or shirtless in the rain with a welding torch, but what the Elite forget to mention is what the Devil scribbled on the back of an IMF napkin: Tariff + Sovereign Ego = Global Economic Apocalypse. If T = Tariff %, P = Price of imports, M = Money supply, then to offset the cost, central banks everywhere are silently doing this:
M’ = M × (1 + T)
That’s right, countries don’t eat the tariff; they print their way through it like rats in a cheese factory. Every time a 30% tariff hits, the government prints 30% more currency. Not just America, but China, the EU, Brazil, India, all of ‘em. Inflation doesn’t scream, it simmers. It’s the synchronized printing press waltz that keeps everything appearing stable. But appearances lie. It ain’t a bubble anymore, it’s a global balloon, and buddy, the needle’s getting closer.
Let’s take a look at the Grand Illusion of Mutual Misery: CHINA: the misunderstood dragon. Folks think they’re itchin’ to kill the dollar. Nonsense. They love the dollar bloated and cocky, because it camouflages their own currency manipulations.
R = (CPI_US × FX_CNY/USD) / CPI_CHINA
Where R = Real perceived stability ratio. If the US inflates, China inflates just enough to stay under the radar. They ain’t trying to torch the dollar, they’re using it as a smokescreen while shifting their chess pieces, one Belt and Road loan at a time. It’s mutual assured deception. Every nation is cooking its books at the same time, and no one’s calling the health inspector, ‘cause they’re all serving from the same poisoned stew.
So when’s it all going to blow? That’s the wrong question, folks. The right question is: Why hasn’t it already? Answer: The Devil’s still laughin’. Markets are no longer tied to value, they’re propped up by prayers, propaganda, and quantitative crack. Every “deal” just prolongs the high. But here’s the grim finale: when this synchronized printing spree hits critical dissonance, meaning when one country flinches, defaults, or exposes the others, the crash won’t be localized. It’ll be a domino detonation. Stocks? Gone. Fiat? Worth toilet paper. Monopoly 1929? Child’s play. This’ll be tariff Armageddon, the Last Great Depression, starring Jerome Powell as the bartender and the Devil as the DJ. The bottom won’t fall out, it’ll be yanked. And the laugh you hear echoing across the smoke and ash? That ain’t thunder, partner. That’s the Devil cashing out.
Egypt - I didn't know you had it in ya. Beautifully crafted and - frankly - spot-on. The World is coming apart. The West is doing anything and everything it can to maintain its dominance and losing. The East is trying to separate itself from the hegemony of the West and the US$. The East doesn't want to invade the West at all - what for..and Sun Tzu has three quotes: 1.) There is no instance of a nation benefiting from a prolonged war (and the U.S. since Korea has been in one war after another creating the $37T debt): 2.) Never interrupt your enemy when he is making a mistake; and, 3.) An Evil Man will burn his own nation to the ground to rule over the ashes. The West can't stand they have lost their hegemony so what do they do - threats, threats, a bomb here, a bomb there, and then more threats. And, what can we peons do - try to prepare as best as possible. Again, thank you Egypt, for your thoughts
He didn’t cause the storm, but he sure is selling umbrellas filled with gasoline before the lightning hits.
Let’s not call him the architect of the apocalypse, more like the renovation manager of a house already on fire, grinning wide and saying:
“Trust me, it’ll be tremendous when it burns down. Best ashes you’ve ever seen.”
And yes, partially agree, he stirred the pot like a meth chef with a Red Bull problem, but that stew was already boiling. The global system’s been wheezing like a chain-smoker on a Peloton long before the orange-tinted demigod took the wheel and about to drive us off a fiscal cliff while tweeting in ALL CAPS.
Let’s be honest, he ain’t the Devil. He’s the contractor the Devil hired off Craigslist. The gears of the machine are grinding to dust, and Donnie-boy just dumping in a few fistfuls of gold-plated sand and saying, “It’s running smoother than ever, folks.” So he didn’t write the script. He’s selling the movie rights and starring in it while we buy tickets with counterfeit money.
Does all of the above still apply if/when the Satsuma demi-God (pretty good, I made that up) and his henchmen from the tribes of Bessent and Lucknik actually DO take some of the current and coming windfalls to apply directly to the national debt?
Don't answer - neither one of us has the inclination or temperament to deal in Hypotheticals. But maybe, just maybe, the current troupe will make a small dent in the irresponsibility of the Congress - which is where the ire of ALL of us should be aimed....
Yes Bill, “ Ms. Russell, who lives in Texas and has four children, must not have much free time. If she had, she might have thought this through a bit further.” And you who live everywhere else except America really shouldn’t care about anything an American says. We know you have too much free time, as you should at your age, but stop wasting your precious time on this nonsense. The left has so many more problems to solve and address like Sydney Sweeney and her Jeans 🧬 commercials:)
Hey Steve. Our summer has been excellent! The weather just broke here in West Virginia . We woke up to about 53° here this morning. Loved it! Steve I hope everything is going well with you and yours! Best wishes the rest of the summer into the fall. As always We will hope for the best but prepare for the worst. May god bless us all
Beautiful! Same with the weather here! It was so nice these past two days, after two straight months of 90+ weather, we finally hit the 60s here in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains😊 Been doing lots of traveling and enjoying family and friends time during these most beautiful days while still in remission. God is great and so grateful for the extra time I was blessed with🙏 Stat happy and healthy and best wishes going forward 🙏 God has already blessed us both, just need some help for the rest of the world 🙏🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Ya know Bill, you wonder how that woman finds the time to write good things about Trumps latest moves but you always seem to find the time to say bad things about him. Hmmm..
I am getting tried of your "sky is falling" articles. I like it when you write about repairing your house, the activities of the neighbors and similar stories.
Yes Bill, all good points if “free trade” ever really existed in our jacked up world. Unfortunately, free trade is not possible with the multiple layers of different entrenched governments around the world. So far, our previous “non-reciprocal” tariffs policies of previous administrations has only hollowed out the working middle class of the U.S. (you’ve previously said so yourself in these missives) and formed working middle classes in other countries. I want my children to have a good job here in the future.
This article, and most of the comments on all sides of our situation are well written and the deep divide and confusion is clear for all to see. I do believe that "only time will tell" applies perfectly. It is my thinking our ever growing $37 trillion debt, and huge interest payments that come along with it are at the core of America's problems. No one is addressing this, and the terrible truth seems to be that politically it can not be dealt with. Did not Musk/DOGE prove this beyond a shadow of a doubt? Who could possibly be elected now while cutting down the size of the federal government, and the odds on Trump's plan to grow our economy enough to support all of this spending are what?
Odds are NOT good and every word of your comment is straight-up FACT, IMO.
It's a shame we can't put the distractive bickering aside and come together to address the root issue that you have perfectly outlined. After all, there are at least 325 millions of us (Citizens) and only 535 of them.
Back of the Napkin - I calculate around 67 Barrels of Tar and 2,388 chickens will be necessary. Plus we can have a great BBQ afterward and figure out how we'll deal with the 2.3 million generally Do-Nothing Unelected Bureaucrats that remain...
blah blah blah - something new is tried, I happen to agree with Rickards. The American consumer is tapped out, if industry could have charged more for their product they would have. The Tariffs will be bore by the importer/exporter, else their stuff will simply sit on shelves. All you do for the last 3 or 4 years of this newsletter, as I been following this board is cry the sky is falling, the sky is falling yet, I get up in the morning and I put on my blues, then I walk to chow in my shiny shoes.
Guess what, the sky, it hasn't fallen. I'm not saying someday it won't, in fact it most likely will. But Geez BB, give the guy a break. New attempts at correcting past F ups are warranted. You and your democratic brethren certainly mucked up the fed go've almost to the point of non-repair.
Why do you insist on faulting the man trying. For an intelligent man that you once were (BB(based on history, yes I been reader of one newsletter or another for probably 25- 30 years)) you sure have become a chronic cry baby.
I don't know what we would do without Bonner gleaning the MSM for every negative comment about the Trump administration policies.
Hey, Bill? Could you give us an update on what's going on with the Trump administration's actions on energy production, including deregulation so that nuclear power plants can be built in a timely manner. And what the EPA is doing to get rid of onerous regulations that have accumulated over the years as well as promotion of oil, gas, and coal development and minimizing the wasteful solar energy and windmill developments. Just wondering if you are looking at some of the important things that are happening besides the negative stuff the MSM spits out on a daily basis.
Well John, from My side of the ledger, all that is being proposed takes more than one day to accomplish. Most likely will not happen in MR.T.'s time as Pres. I mean the fruits, if that is a proper term. I would like to see many of His works for America to come to pass. But what he is doing to the rest of His trading partners has something to be desired from My view .
I guess this means a re-ordering as the swamp gets flooded. Besides my understanding was the EU annointed was accelerating their net zero goals away from those dirty assets and asses.
I agree that this shaking up of world trade is messy, but it seems to me that each of your arguments has at its core the assumption that everything was perfect before the changes. It wasn’t. That's the way it works with the Marxists/Leftists/Democrats, there is never any double entry bookkeeping.
I can't help but point out that if we stick to what's written in the comment you're answering, you've just called the Trump administration Marxists.
Uh no, Mr. Avondet's statement (which is the one I replied to) was, "Most of your (and most every other) analysis is one sided accounting." The "your" in that sentence was a reference to Mr. Bonner, not the Trump administration. Competent reading comprehension is necessary to be an effective commenter on here.

Link your sources that prove me wrong - because I can show Evidence that everything I wrote is happening now...
Brotha D - are you trying to blow up Patty's little mind with Truth?
These people are laughably and arrogantly ignorant....
1. I'm a glutton for punishment.
2. Laughter is supposed to be good for your Health...
"Maybe, even if, doubt it, even assuming, very unlikely, even if it did".....
You running a hedge fund or making a comment?
"𝒀𝒐𝒖 𝒓𝒖𝒏𝒏𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒂 𝒉𝒆𝒅𝒈𝒆 𝒇𝒖𝒏𝒅 𝒐𝒓 𝒎𝒂𝒌𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒂 𝒄𝒐𝒎𝒎𝒆𝒏𝒕?"
😂😂Oh man, it's good to have you back.
Just pointing out the “what ifs”. You a gambler?
Not when I have a choice - or find something akin to candy from babies*...

LOL!!
R = (CPI_US × FX_CNY/USD) / CPI_CHINA
Well, said my friend.
Right behind Bill Bonner?
And Damn that Orange Hitler for causing it all!
AmIright?
You’re not wrong Star-Man ⭐️🪐🔭.
Hiya Gypt -
Fair assessment on ONE condition:
You know, Steve I never heard before of Sid Sweeney. But when I saw her pictures on 0 hedge, I can see why people like her.😂😂😂
How are you doing brother? Hope all is well with you and your family 🙏 enjoy the rest of the summer!
God is great and so grateful for the extra time I was blessed with🙏 Stat happy and healthy and best wishes going forward 🙏 God has already blessed us both, just need some help for the rest of the world 🙏🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Pitting Ursala against Donald, what alternative outcome did anyone expect?
The fight of the century!
Grey Bush vs Orange Man. Coming soon to a White House lawn near you. Loser gets a hit with a fifteen percent tariff. DING!
She lost before she put on her jockstrap.....
pS - "Grey Bush". LM8thgradeAO.... :)
They all left.
They've grown tired as well.
P.S. They didn't get paid for their repairs to the gypsy wagon.
Hi Frank -
Odds are NOT good and every word of your comment is straight-up FACT, IMO.
1.Currency war
2.Trade war
3.World war ?
1930 redux?
I want to cancel this "service". Mostly trash.
The point is rather dull.
