“Alas, Mancur Olson, who taught at the University of Maryland, pointed out the problem in the 1970s. He described it in “The Logic of Collective Action.” In short, what’s good for some isn’t necessarily best for all”.
In 1974 George Washington University Professor Of Mgt Science Jerry B Harvey introduced the Abilene Paradox. Via a parable of a blistering hot and nasty road trip to Aibilene he demonstrates how groups end up making decisions or doing things that none of the individual members would ever agree to if they had the sole decision making authority. A link to the original article he wrote is below. It has been a guiding principle for all aspects of my life.
My dad gave me a copy of this article in 1977 as my graduation ‘gift’ from college, along with his own missive on how to bring value to my new employer. At the time I thought it was a strange gift. It did not take me very long, working at a large firm with 1000s of employees, to realize how valuable the ‘gift’ really was and armed with the lessons from the parable (and blessed I suppose with stellar ‘brain genes’ from both my parents) I was soon punching well above me weight. Which ultimately led to multiple promotions, a paid sabbatical to finish law school, and retirement (the first time) at age 45.
"he demonstrates how groups end up making decisions or doing things that none of the individual members would ever agree to if they had the sole decision making authority."
In other words, none of us are as dumb as all of us put together.
You are most welcome! I still have the original copy my dad gave me all those years ago. It is pinned on the underside of our chart table (we live on our sailboat) so every time I flip up the top I am reminded of my dad and of the paradoxical lesson.
Thanks for your note. Happy holidays to you as well. Eric.
Edward R. Murrow was a true investigative journalist who stood up to Senator Joe McCarthy in the late 1940s to mid 1950s. He would be ashamed to see where newspaper reporters and journalists today have sunk in this past honorable profession by ignoring stories of corruption and governmental destruction of our Constitution and the Bill of Rights. Supposedly, the "Fourth Estate" main job is to expose misdeeds of those in power and protect the ordinary citizens from abuses of power. In the past several weeks, Bill has raised numerous issues that men like Murrow, Cronkite, Reasoner would have run with and powerful people would have been publicly exposed and prosecuted. It seems that the reporters and editors of newspapers and television news channels today are graduates of the "Joseph Goebbels' 'Big Lie" School of Journalism. It's so sad to see our nation where it is today. Bill, keep telling us about these important issues. Maybe, a true investigative reporter will rise from the current journalistic sewer and run with the issues you expose to us daily.
Murrow worked for William Paley, the head of CBS. Paley built a strong CBS news division, based on the premise that entertainment and news should be completely separate. Making a profit was for the entertainment division, not as important for the news division. Murrow and people like Cronkite were trusted in their reporting. Today, the separation between news and entertainment has totally broken down, so that the profit motive is more important than trust or accuracy in what is being reported to the people. As a result, no one believes or trusts the news any more. My two cents...
Robert A. Caro’s epic four-volume biography of former US President Lyndon Johnson is among the most meticulously researched and elegantly written chronicles of the life of a single person. Spanning more than 3,000 pages and stuffed with meticulously detailed notes and sources, The Years of Lyndon Johnson collection makes for a sobering read. There is one overarching and inescapable conclusion drawn from its pages: Johnson was a grotesquely corrupt person willing to say and do anything to accumulate power and enrich himself.
“Trade with all, align with none“. That was George Washington. Solinski, a puppet installed by America, has been shelling the Don Deas since 2014. Prior to that the Ukrainians had a democratically elected president. Zelenskyy has shut down all free-speech in the Ukraine. My heart breaks for all the lost lives in the Ukraine and of course the Russian military. Putin would love to end the war now with assurances of no missiles in Ukraine. All fourth turnings come with war, and as we are currently in one, this is what we have. Americas elite have to have a distraction for the collapsing economy. Please take a look at the last 20 years. take a look at which country in the world has invaded many sovereign nations and killed hundreds and hundreds of thousands. No I am not an anti Semite. Saying that is just like using the race card. When Madeleine Albright commented on our sanctions it in the Middle East. She was asked “if it was OK but half 1 million children died”. Her response was it was worth it. Nobody kills like America. Very sorry, voice text.
Nam was lost on the ground by half assed, erratic decision making; as well as weak and confusing policy's. 54,000 young men for nothing !! Even the architect of that travesty admitted on his deathbed that it was a mistake. The courageous people at CBS and other outlets - rightfully opposed the 'war' [which was never declared a war]. I do not give a rat's butt that those poor souls were uneducated, Buddhists, "rice paddy dwellers" --it was their country and this wicked nation had no business in it. And fie on you, sir, for minimizing and condoning what that "crook - Nixon" did.
Should never make a serious reply to a liberal/communist. If anyone agrees with Biden’s “Reset”, they are either ignorant, dumber then a rock, anti American, evil or all the above. Not necessary explaining to these creatures, as you can’t fix stupid…
Yes PV, and Cronkite was part of the bought and paid for journalism America has dealt with for decades. Really the beginning of the corrupt media industry…
The reason why productivity has fallen is because people are very aware that they are being short changed in their pay. They, the employers, pretend to pay their workers, and the workers pretend to work. A command economy does not work. The Soviets proved it and now we are affirming it all over again. Freedom works. Free economies work better (although not without problems) than command economies. Too many rules spoil the economic incentive. Granted, some rules are good. But we are far far from a few good rules. We are mired down is a sea of junk rules. The Woke crowd is a prime example of sand in the gears.
So, what can be done about it? Well, start by throwing out the damned Federal Registry and start over from scratch. Of course, that won't happen. So, what is a practical way of renewing the nation? A mega crash would do it. And that is exactly where we are headed. When everyone is out of work and big corporations fail, then the rules change. But not before the crash. It takes a Great Depression to rebuild a nation.
As a business owner in my 41st year, I would say you are both right and wrong. Any well managed business would not tolerate people that "quiet quit" because they would weed out the lackluster performers and delegate their duties and responsibilities to those that actually want to work and be productive.
Conversely, a lot of big tech companies and other large businesses are really quasi-government operations where the management get paid huge money to grow their staffs and budgets. The idea is they get paid better as a Chief if they have more Indians. The Indians don't necessary have enough work to do, but it benefits the Chiefs because it justifies more compensation.
I have a lot of municipal and county government agencies as clients. I could walk down the City Hall or County Seat building in any one of them and randomly dismiss one-half of the staff in all of their offices. The discernible difference the next day? Absolutely nothing, and that is the same scenario in most big companies. They simply raise their prices to their customers (or in government's case, fees and taxes) and the whole perverted system perpetuates itself. It's not how this country was built, but it sure will be its demise.
So the U.S. has had to export its inflation and import deflation (Off-Shoring) since they officially ditched the gold standard back in 1971. Ask yourself this question: Would they have had to resort to this (Off-Shoring) if people didn't consistently vote for more big beautiful government? Contrary to public opinion, someone had to pay for this big beautiful government as there's no free lunch. The biggest pot of money lies with the middle class so that's exactly where they went. So by consistently voting for more big beautiful government the middle class played a leading role in their own demise. Statolatry mixed with economic illiteracy is one lethal cocktail. The apparatchiks should be very thankful ignorance is bliss; otherwise they would be dangling from lampposts all across America :-)
I'm not sure what to say. You are correct, in that, most do not understand the "ongoing" situation. I've tried to explain, to my friends, that the politicians we all love and adored, did nothing, but the same. Everyone loved Reagan, Bush, Trump, Clinton, but they all did the same thing, spend money we don't have. Moving to another country is a great idea, not because their government is better, but because it is smaller. They have less rules to stagnate their economy, sometimes. The founding fathers were correct, a smaller government is a better government. Jim C
This is a flat out lie. Granted it's a lie that's been around for a very long time, and a great many people consider it the truth, but nonetheless it's still a lie. There wasn't a balanced budget (net zero or surplus) a single time during Clinton's administration. If you don't believe me you can go to the US Treasury web site and look up the numbers yourself. The supposed balanced budget was nothing but accounting gimmickry between public debt and intragovernmental debt. You'll see that the national debt INCREASED each and every year of Clinton's presidency.
So, Cat, maybe you can explain how we could have a balanced budget and an increase in the national debt at the same time.
Or perhaps like the word "Is", a "balanced budget" just depends on your personal definition.
I looked up the national deficit for each fiscal year since 1929. In billions, 1998 was ($69), 1999 was ($126), 2000 was ($236), and 2001 was ($128). Then Dubya blew a hole in it with tax cuts and 2 stupid wars. A sane person won't cut his income and increase his expenses at the same time.
Actually, Clinton had little to nothing to do with the budget during his tenure. That's the purview of this thing we call "Congress". Newt Gingrich and the Republican Congress during Clinton's tenure, those are the people that understand how our government works and know history give the credit for the almost balanced budget during the Clinton years. It was a nice try though.
Involved to the extent that Clinton didn't get much of what he wanted. I get that Presidents have influence, but Gingrich and his boys were running the show.
C: they never remember anything good or positive things about any Democrats. They only like negativity, even if it's made up. Have you heard one thing from them that was negative about Trump? So far he has gotten away with too much...should be incarcerated..hopefully soon.
I'll give you plenty of negative things about Trump. Starting with I did not vote for him in the Republican primary election in 2016 and I won't vote for him in the 2024 primary if he has an opponent I like better (paging Ron DeSantis!). I don't like his hubris, braggadocio or the way he attacks anyone that even mildly disagrees with him. He turns a lot of people off, which is why my side would do well not to elect him as our nominee.
On the flip side, I'd vote for a bottle of ketchup before I'd vote for whomever the Marxist/Leftist/Democrat party puts forth as a candidate. I don't know how old you are, but I'm guessing you're at an age that you should be able to recognize the difference between today's Democrat party and the one your parents or grandparents supported. My parents voted Democrat for 50 years until Barack Hussein Obama rolled in. As died in the wool as they were, they were smart enough to recognize how destructive his ideas and policies were. Not to mention his "we're going to fundamentally change the United States of America!" crap. I ask you, do you want to fundamentally change anything or anyone you love? (I didn't think so.)
And they still think that he was the greatest president ever--someone who will be charged with seditious conspiracy--should be treason, too. They should all be dropped on their heads and then have their brains reassembled. But don't get me started . . . .
Not the greatest ever, just one of the greatest. He's not going to be charged with anything because he didn't do anything wrong. Why has Garland appointed a Special Counsel if the evidence against Trump is so strong? Why isn't Trump on trial for all the things of which you accuse him? Do you have one critical thinking cell in your brain?
Though PG just laid it out perfectly, you won't be able to see through your jealousy and hate to recognize the truth that he explained in detail. It's sad that we have to spend our time offering pearls to swine.
As entertaining as Trump is, I have come to believe he is now unelectible. His unfavorable numbers are simply too high for him to win a national election. There are too many Independents and pansy Republicans that either won't pull the lever for him or will just stay home. Sad commentary on the state of play, but you can't govern if you can't win an election(s).

PGV: Then you are really stupid! I thought you were at least a little smart, but I see that you are not! Pardoning all the Jan6 people isn't doable. You do the crime..you do the time. Trump doesn't care what happens to all the rioters. He only cares about Trump and being President again and screw everyone else. It aint going to happen.
You are Delusional. Prove he tweeted twice; he kept watching it on TV while it was happening and DID NOTHING! His personal FBI people might have known but no one else.
Much of the problem with free speech and the Internet rests in the fact that good analysis and "easy to generate, fun to do, shoot your mouth off" analysis has equal access to the Internet and the general public, busy keeping their heads above water does not have good tools with which to distinguish between the two. Good analysis is needed more than ever to navigate the waters of a small planet with a population of 8 billion, likely 11 billion people by the end of the century. There has always been a surplus of the other. The issue exposes the soft underside of democracy. As far as working more time is concerned it would be interesting to figure in how much of that time is spent on surfing and considering the wasted time in the calculation. Likely productivity would be calculated to be higher.
More like “The Big Drop” again, Rickards takes the lead down the stretch, the #4 horse is dead in the water, come on Russell Base, whip that pig to the finish line! 😂
Happy New Year to the stock market, 😃👍😂, it is time to rebalance your portfolio dear friends. Move around your funds so that you don’t look like a schmuck in the negative going into the new year! Yay!
The trend is your friend, and your friend is still on a downward path homeboy! The path if least resistance Buddha.
Markets trending in the negative on their way to recession land. The yield curve is shot. Oil prices making new lows? Why? What happened to Russa and Putin stockpiling this black sleek substance? Not much, plenty of oil to go around, oil prices drop and the price of gold rises like the land of the Golden Sun, a picture perfect recession indicator. 😃
If they didn't cover it it is of no consequence. And I told you before that a study of news outlets showed that the highest accuracy and neutral positions were found to be AP, Reuters, NPR, PBS Newshour, and BBC. Then "Here are some of the most biased news outlets that you should avoid: FOX NEWS, MSNBC, InfoWars, Sky News, and Breitbart News."
Maybe that much power & money would make me abandon the ethos I live and run a business by, but I don’t think so. It’s why I would not be electable in the first place. Doing the right thing is always the right thing to do.
Yes Bill, Hillary said “it takes a village” to raise your children. As we see, our village is run by the village idiot, and “the majority is always wrong” as we all witnessed in our banana republic fake election process…
Bill, Great article. Is what happened the Abilene Paradox (as Moody brought to our attention),or is it a Deep state conspiracy to enslave us,work for slave wages , and be happy with no freeodoms,or both.
Is Trumps Trial ,the tail wagging the dog( they prefer we stay idiots and not see what is really going on).Was his threat of draining the swamp in Washington, taken seriously by the Alligators and united them to drain the Constitution and Bill of Rights. 9/11 started the momentum with the Patriot act, which every President since has renewed. Just thoughts.
I remember reading one of Bill’s missives in the early 2000s... where he wrote that he hoped people got their money’s worth from reading (it was a free service)

But what gave the US policing rights in Vietnam?
Amen! We need to mind our own business. Defence contractors made a fortune. Another war of wasted blood and treasure.

Bill,
Much of the problem with free speech and the Internet rests in the fact that good analysis and "easy to generate, fun to do, shoot your mouth off" analysis has equal access to the Internet and the general public, busy keeping their heads above water does not have good tools with which to distinguish between the two.
Sayonara! 😂
YOU are the swine, horrible man.
YOU are tedious and vexing. Stop commenting to me.
"He tweeted twice for them to be peaceful"--big whoop! That was hours after telling them to go to the Capital and fight like Hell.
I need information on stocks.
