OK, Gang. I held off on this, so I could see what y'all had to say. Guess you could figure my perspective would be different, so here goes...

I'm not interested in longevity. That's right; I care not a straw for longevity. It's productivity I want: output, accomplishment, and satisfaction, and the more of that within an allotted time-frame, the better. Just "living" long is not something I prize. I see many people living 20 years or more beyond actuarial "life expectancy", but all they do is exist. Not for me. At 72, my productivity dwindles, and it frustrates the living (whatever) out of me. Best always. PM

John S's avatar

We can't help the dwindling, Paul, and I'm a few years older than you, but you can still be productive, just temper your expectations around what's achievable. But you are correct imo about existing - that's never seemed like fun to me

I once heard that Bill does 100 pull-ups per day in segments with pull bars in several places in his home?

As an orthopedic surgeon I see the results of obesity involving joints & major operations. The pundits say that body weight squats, pushups & pull-ups in that order are most important exercises for longevity. Life preserving activity to help you avoid falls & strengthens your body to absorb the trauma of is fall. Regular use of these exercises will add zest to all phases of your life.

One can see who is helping the most for the trapped people in Asheville NC. It's the surrounding Americans in SC, GA, VA and other states as far away as Lousiana coming to the aid of other Americans. FEMA is lost as a goose in a hsil storm. Our $ is going to Ukraine and Israel not the Southeast US to help in the recovery of Americans and in dome cases illegal immigrants that got caught in the path of Helene. They may be illegal, but their human beings that need basic food and water to survive. Our government is a failure when these disasters happen. But Biden doing a photo opportunity flying over the deviststion really helps. Give me a break.

A German painter and sculpture, famous at his time (1847 - 1935) confided in his diary a sentence which goes like this:

" I can´t feed in as much as I need to throw up"

Hard to translate, each translation forum I checked fails to transport the utter disgust of the author. This was his reaction on the day Hitler was elected to Chancelor, 1933.

Sheesh. No air of elitism there at all. And I say this as a person who has made a good living BEING that Gardener and/or providing those services to people like Bill.

PS - Posting again about The Oldest Profession in the World. It's not what you think, ladies. It's being a Gardener, see Genesis 2:15. God made man and the very FIRST thing He did with him was put him in the garden "to keep it and tend it." This was before He swiped the rib and made Eve...

Every cell in your body is supposed to have hundreds if not thousands of mitochondria generating energy. Most ultraprocessed food damages these mitochondria. Fine - don't eat ultraprocessed food. But it sneaks in. Chickens for instance eat grains that are GMO and high in omega6 fats. It's even worse if they are grown in CAFO systems. Most people have glyphosate in their blood. That damages your mitochondria.

I thought I was free of ultraprocessed food - living 9000 feet up in the Andes, eating locally grown food. But I liked my $2 lunch at an imaginative local restaurant. She cooked something different each day. The only thing that was the same was that she used chicken each day. I could hardly walk for half an hour with the pain in my calf muscles. I cut out the restaurant meals, and I walked for an hour and three quarters twice in the past month with my dog, and three quarters of an hour for the second dog walk in the afternoon. I am seven years past my life expectancy.

regarding comments about gardening. Gardening provides exercise, sunshine, fresh air and food, a four bagger. Instead of having the gardener do it, do it yourself!

A quote from Michael Pollan also applies. "Eat food, mostl plants, not to much"

Finally regarding exercise. Work on strength, aerobics, and flexibility. Exercise is like a 3 legged stool. Miss one leg and the stool is much less effective. The same with exercise.

Come on guys. Have a little empathy for the two most important classes in the US, illegals and government bureaucrats. Whenever this administration's bureaucrats are called to task about their bad decisions or actions, it's not their fault. but bad law, those prejudice founders of our Republic, the Republicans, the weather, Martians, or worst of all "Trump". How could anyone think that Socialist or Communist bureaucrats would ever "implement" anything against their own citizens but favor illegal foreign entries! Well, in my opinion and for what it's worth, things may not be the best if Trump wins but if Harris wins, the average American citizen will get a preview of what hell may look like. I sure pray that I'm wrong. If so, you youngsters can say "there's no fool like an old fool".l

Why has Millei allowed Argentina’s gold to be taken? He claimed to be a follower of Hoppe and Rothbard but, instead he adheres to the supremacist/genocidal policies of U.S./U.K./Israeli Neo-Cons.

Type 2 diabetes is mostly related to genetics and not diet. Of course it is better to eat correctly. Type 2 diabetes is caused by the insulin receptors not working properly. Filipinos have the highest incidence in the world because of genetics. It does not help that they love rice.

Expand full comment
Bob Wetmore's avatar

This is total nonsense. It is so for an obvious reason; the incidence of Type 2 diabetes has absolutely spiraled in recent years. Forty or fifty years ago it was an occasional affliction; now that people are fat, it has become virtually universal. "Genetics" do not change over the course of a generation or two. Its the junk food and sedentary lifestyles that are responsible.

However the disposition to diabetes is genetic. The worst prognosis for type 2 diabetes is in thin people as they cannot help the diabetes by losing weight. You need to stick what you have know

and leave the medical science to the experts.

After ten years of martial arts, then not visiting a jiu jitsu class for 15 years, I toyed with the idea (for a year out of fear of breaking my neck), and then decided to enroll in a beginner class after visiting a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (on vacation in Dubai UAE) that was very friendly and welcoming. I had exercised three months before I started, was embarrassed to be old and barely able. I struggled to keep up, yet I slept, swam and ate and walked each day before 8pm daily classes. I survived, the young people, were kind and let me fail to keep up without comment. I may continue when I get home. I told them I was 62, to minimize attention, and any reluctance to accept me. Was 72 in July, many of my body hurt, and have somewhat limited range of motion. I surprised myself. Cheers to those of us who desire to be stronger for longer. Thanks for reminding us Bill.
