Some homeless are savvy enough to travel to cities that have better services for them
Others (from personal experience where I live) refuse city services (e. g. , especially shelters even on the coldest of nights) because they don't like rules that shelters impose and/or the theft of their "things' by other homeless.
I've come to conclude homelessness is a choice even by those who were once housed.
Of this group, it's the homeless veterans that baffle me most.

I have a business associate that has turned his landscaping business in Southern California around by providing a contract service to city and county governments where he puts his guys in Hazmat suits and they go into areas where homeless congregate and "disinfect them" on a weekly basis.
As a result of dealing with homeless in many different places on a regular basis he has come to a few conclusions:
1) 80% of the people that are homeless absolutely want to be. The reasons vary, but the vast majority of this population have substance abuse problems, suffer from mental illness or a combination of both.
2) Most of the local governments in So. Cal. do not want to pass the ordinances that would have the teeth necessary to seriously reduce homelessness. In large part it's because it creates jobs for the government staff in those cities and counties. (It also benefits related service providers like my associate.) It's become an industry all to itself.
There are multifaceted solutions, but they require the political will to implement. They won't be cheap, but neither are the status quo approaches currently in use. The problem is that the status quo is benefiting a lot of people that don't want change.
The solution to homelessness is not FREE homes or free lodging that just encourages more homeless. Pouring Bilions of $$$ to quote "solve" the homeless issue in total B.S. - it is just buying votes for the democrates.
The real solution is providing free eduction to the homeless. Vocational education can be used to get them employed and out of the streets. Why can't our governments see that as a solution.
They also makeup a large portion of home cleaners..However, the national home cleaning chains hire the latio's for $20/hour and charge the customer $160/ cleaning - Whoa - huge overhead charge of. over 85%! They are the real crooks.

Mr. Murray, So true. I've noticed that the new Bill quotes almost exclusively leftist publications in his essays. And he generalizes and cherry-picks stats, like they do. Typical propaganda, such as his generalization of the third-world illegal peasants in the U.S., failing to mention that 98% of them would vote for radical leftists if ever given the right to vote via a mass amnesty because these leftists would simply buy their votes with promises of free stuff (almost all of it borrowed, by the way), and knowing these peasants are culturally supportive of Big Govt. That is why the countries they flee are hellholes. And he rarely criticizes leftists anymore. Very telling. For example, in his essay today, he singles out some GOP lawmakers who question Pres. Trump's initial move out of Germany with no mention of almost every Democrat in Congress who he knows oppose the move. With leftists/globalists, it's not what they say or write, it's what they don't say.
And Bill ironically is writing this essay while living it up at a fancy resort in of all places, Nicaragua, a terribly-poor, backward country led by Daniel Ortega, whose govt. has been accused by the U.N. and various human rights orgs over the previous few years of various horrific atrocities against hundreds of its own citizens for merely speaking out against this government. And these victims are the only ones brave enough to come forward.
It makes me wonder if Bill actually writes many of these shallow leftist essays anymore; or, because of his advanced age, it's one of his children or young assistants? Many wealthy businessmen have trust-fund kids who are sent off to elite universities and come out brainwashed into believing Big Govt. is God, ironically just like third-world peasants believe.

The country is going to change in a big way once we Boomers are gone. It just might be that the Big Loss is postponed until then, and all of us worried about nothing. Atthe mid-point in his career, Bonner had a pragmatic, practical bent which is now gone, forsaken perhaps, and he now sees himself free to express his core thinking? I don't know. I think his visceral dislike of Donald Trump got into him and drove him to distraction. He is borderline monomaniacal as a result. Maybe it's all a pose; maybe he delights in our discomfiture. The word "illegal" offers a clue. They crossed into the country illegally for four years under the Biden administration. That's a crime. Largely because they were unvetted and we don't know if they came as "burger-flippers and gardeners", or construction workers, or to sponge off of the welfare system, or God knows what. We don't know.
Illegal and criminal record are not synonyms. You have to be detained for a crime to get a criminal record. But don't forget that Trump used illegals at his resorts. Donnie also commuted the sentence of Sholom Rubashkin whose meat packing business employed 389 illegal immigrants. Apparently both teams like using illegals to keep labor costs down.
