I've never understood why our Federal government hasn't resuscitated the Guest Worker program as a means to -- ex-post facto -- let gainfully employed people and their progeny obtain a temporary residence permit.
It would be a form of documentation that would allow the "gardeners and burger flippers" now here to stay plus provide a strong impetus to a policy requiring people interested in this program to apply at the US Embassy in their country
It wouldn't eradicate desperate people from sneaking into the US but it would allow those who have become productive members of our society to become belatedly documented.
