There is no such thing as a "winnable" war. If one nation blows its competitor-opponent into the Stone Age, the conqueror becomes responsible for the conquered's welfare and restoration. If the conqueror shirks that obligation, another nation (or coalition of nations) will pick up the slack in some form or another. If the conquerer merely absorbs the conquered into his system/sphere of influence, his overhead increases there as well. This idea was best expressed in the slogan popular under Bush 43, "You can win the war, but you can't win the peace." At some level, maybe intuitively and maybe consciously, and somewhat unwillingly, we learned this lesson in WWII, and ever since, we have fought "police actions" instead of wars, seeking not to destroy or conquer, but merely discipline. The approach/policy has been an expensive, disastrous failure. The Romans did succeed in literally wiping Carthage off the map, but did that "success" solve/eliminate Rome's problems? Best always. Wiping Carthage off the map solved the Romans problem for centuries. In fact, that problem never came back.

How long do you think it takes to declare victory?

Expand full comment
Paul Murray's avatar

Yes, you are correct; it solved an immediate problem, which was eliminating a competitor. We have done the same thing. As a result of WWII, especially the way it ended in Japan, we eliminated all competition, which gave us a skewed perspective on our role in the world and what we could or could not do; in fact, it encouraged us to think that the rules didn't apply to us. Soon we were overextended, and the answer was not to change our thinking or adjust our policies, but to spend money we didn't have, until we are $35 trillion in debt. Rome got the idea it was not only invincible but infallible. The "centuries" to which you allude are due to the fact that the world didn't move as fast in the days of Rome as it does now, so our catastrophe is upon us sooner. Thank you for your response. Engagement is always good. Best always. PM

Depends on your definition of winnable. A few nukes launched by either side will end the war, and make restoration, a non-issue. As no one will want to venture into the fallout zone. For a few hundred if not thousand years.

Expand full comment
Paul Murray's avatar

True, but in a limited context. After we've nuked every habitable space, then what? Best always. PM

Lucas Kandia's avatar

Even with thousands of nukes, not every habitable space will have been targetted. The fallout may blanket most parts of the planet, but life will continue. Check out "habitable zone Chernobyl" for life after radiation. Or better yet, hop on a plane/train and visit mankind's best works in Hiroshima, Nagasaki for some first hand evidence.

And civilization as we know it, will start over. First on the agenda? Weapons of deterrence.

"Manpower and determination beat techpower. "

Wise words for the dimocrat/communists and our "leaders" to remember when they:

A. Succeed in killing Donald Trump

B. "Successfully" steal the Presidency in November.

Either circumstance is going to result in a YUGE blowback/shitstorm that they are currently counting on Law Enforcement and likely elements of our Military to be able to quell. It ain't gonna happen like they think.

ProTip: Hey Joey, your F-15's aren't going to be the gamechanger you think they are.

PS - I feel like I have to share this. On the suggestion of a friend I downloaded an app called RedAlert. This is an app that sends out text warnings when Hezbollah (or in the past, Gaza) launches rockets into Israel. Typically there is less than 2 minutes to get into a bomb shelter once the alert is received. The alerts come out with the towns listed where the Rockets could potentially land, and there are maps that show any rockets that actually hit the ground and explode, based on each warning that goes out. The reason I'm writing this here is because the last 48 hours have been a complete eye opener for me. My phone literally goes off nearly nonstop in the early evening and the very early morning hours. Dozens of Alerts in the last TWO DAYS. And this after the leadership of hezbollah has been decimated. It's astonishing to me to think that were I in Israel right now, potentially my life would be at stake every time the alert comes in. What a horrible way to be forced to live. It's become very clear that unless you are in Israel, you have no idea the threat that they live under. I invite you to download the link from any App Store and just leave it on your phone for a few days. In all likelihood it will change how you view the current situation around Israel and the Middle East. At the least, check this site to see what has been going on in the last 24 hours:

The premise of the Dow/Gold ratio is that gold is a constant (k). I have sold physical gold many times since 1980, sometimes for outrageous (comparatively) amounts, and other times for disappointing amounts. In every instance, I wish I had not sold. Why? Because I had to buy it back when I could, or suffer permanent reduction in personal capital, and when I had the ability (cash on hand) to "reload", the situation "on the ground" was not always (meaning: seldom) favorable. The problem, as I see it, is lack of flexibility in response to circumstances for the "average" man. My creditors and my obligations/infrastructure failure never said to me, "We understand that you can't pay right now, because the 'timing' isn't favorable. We'll wait until the arrangements are more favorable to you." Even though the Dollar is essentially worthless, it's still the "coin of the realm", and as such, a participant in the "system" needs "cash" to negotiate the maze, and he/she needs it at the ready and in ever-growing quantity. Best always. PM

I've been hesitant to post anything for a while. Here goes now. I've been thru death, disaster, disease, dishonestly of family and 'true friends', divorce, drouth resulting in disappearance of wealth and assets, but I perserve with the love of Christ in my heart. Pure bull-headedness, tenacity and intestinal fortitude have kept me going.

So I had checked cattle one day last month and they had held condition well regardless of the dry weather and limited grass. As I shut the gate and leaned on the pickup, I made a small prayer, "Lord, if you would like me to have more pasture for the animals in my care, send me a sign".

I drove down the road a quarter of a mile and there was a sign in the ditch...it said 'Land for Sale'.

Not wishing to disappoint the good Lord, I pulled the phone out and called the realtor. I said, "Consider it sold". He said, "I just put the sign out". I said, "Are you a sign hanger or a realtor?"

Considering that this property is surrounded by big operators that can and will cut a check in a New York second, I knew I had one quick instance to make the deal. Screwing around with bankers for getting the funds would be 'iffy', considering that that it would take time, aggravation and disappointment (since I had been told during a recent unpleasant divorce that my finances showed the 'Hooker formation'- no visible signs of support) I went another direction .

I cashed in enough precious metals to put the total amount in the abstract companies escrow account.

My question then is: while my head says it is the right thing to do, my heart says it is the right thing to do and I'm sure the cattle says it is the right thing to do...I would entertain the opinion of those more world-wise and experienced than me to counsel.

Is this time to exchange precious metals for real estate?

Not the worst time for sure, especially since you bought land which can not only hold value or generate gains but can also feed your cattle. Gold is at an all time high, you still have gold in your portfolio and neither you or the cattle can eat the gold. Good luck to you.

Bill: Your sentiments on war are well known to your readers, and generally I think we all agree with your perspective that war is terrible and should never happen. Nor, should anyone support war as a solution. Not speaking for anyone else, I agree fully. However, I see a dilemma with your “pie-in-the-sky” approach to the Middle East conflict. The muslim-based countries [some not all] hate Israel and the US and want to destroy them. They cannot be persuaded to not hold this hatred, and they cannot be persuaded to stop trying to kill Israel or the US. We are isolated by our oceans [negated by our open border] so we don’t have the daily fear of being killed by the Muslims. Israel, however, has no such isolation; therefore, they live in fear EVERYDAY that they will be killed by a religious zealot or hateful government. There is no need to point out to you the thousands of attacks against Israel, and hundreds of thousands of attacks thwarted by Israel. That threat hangs like the sword of Damocles over Israel’s citizenry. Would you live like that, or would you like your grandchildren to live like that? Of course not. So, why should the Israels? If one is confronted by a mad dog, one has only one choice - kill it. Israel can live in peace with its neighbors. It has proven that. Further, Israel has asked for peace from its enemies, but has not gotten that. Until Israel’s enemies stop trying to kill it, there will be war in the Middle East. Blaming them for what is happening in that part of the world is like blaming the dog-bite victim who killed the mad dog.

Bill, I have been faithfully reading your daily blogs from France, Ireland, Argentina, Baltimore and wherever else on the Globe you may roam over the last few years, and I am impressed with your knowledge of history and didactic prose. But, I'm getting a little tired of your incessant negativity. Do you ever have a positive thought in your brilliant mind.

Regarding your most recent writing, what do you want Israel to do. Sit back and be annihilated by every antisemitic terrorist organization in the Middle East that wants to kill or subjugate all the Jews it can get their hands on.

The problem with the present feckless administration is they think the way to wage war is only to defend yourself and then declare a cease fire before you have a chance to go on the offensive to decisively defeat your enemy. How would that have worked out with the Germans and Japanese in WW II. We would still be fighting the Nazis and the Japanese Empire.

Biden/Harris/Blinken naively think a cease fire will lead to a 2-state solution. That's nonsense. Ask the PA or Hamas if they even want a 2-state solution (rather than asking Israel to settle for one) and they will never ever agree. They want a 1-state solution, all Muslim. They have been offered a 2-state solution on a silver platter 3 times over the last 25 years with Israel making all the concessions and they do not even counter-offer. They are afraid that if Israel agreed to a peace deal they offered, which has to include by definition a Jewish state, their leader would be assassinated.

The phrase "you are either with us or against us" was used by Bush a number of times. The earliest that I can find some semblage of it in the media was on September 20, 2001 when he addressed congress on "Terrorism."

https://www.presidency.ucsb.edu/documents/address-before-joint-session-the-congress-the-united-states-response-the-terrorist-attacks

" Every nation, in every region, now has a decision to make: Either you are with us, or you are with the terrorists. From this day forward, any nation that continues to harbor or support terrorism will be regarded by the United States as a hostile regime."

I swear I heard him say those words "you are either with us, or against us" in the rubble of the twin towers in the days following 9/11, but I can't find the video or transcript.

Yet.

Tom: Does the Dow in the Dow/gold ratio contain dividends?

Unwinnable war seems to be the only kind we have experienced in the last 40 years. Someone of wisdom might consider this when getting into the next one, someday. On the other hand nothing like a good scapegoat for any story. The Democrats and Republicans just can't afford to stop killing people when they have great excuses to come up with for retaining their power.

Expand full comment
JW's avatar

I am not Tom, but I have thought about the Dow dividends in relation to Dow/Gold. Dow Gold is USD price of 1 Dow / 1 ozt Gold. If Dow dividends were reinvested, the Dow side of the ratio would become greater than 1 Dow and the ratio would no longer be a 1:1 USD price ratio. Dow with dividends reinvested / 1 ozt Gold would not be a meaningful price chart. If you want to compare Dow and Gold as INVESTMENTS, just use a "What if I invested" calculator, pick a point in time to start your Dow with dividends reinvested and compare it to the USD performance of Gold over the same time frame. This is not what the Dow/Gold ratio is for. Dow/Gold is used as a long term trend signal to tell us when stock investments are expensive or cheap priced in non-depreciating wealth (gold).

Expand full comment
JW's avatar

I ran the IYY (iShares Dow Jones U.S. ETF) from its date of inception, June 16, 2000, investing the price of 1 ozt of gold that day ($289.25). The Dow 30 with dividends reinvested would now be worth $1716.99. So, gold has well outpaced the Dow 30 over the past 24+ years, even with Dow 30 dividends reinvested along the way! Interesting.
