Major cycles — from boom to bubble to bust...from consensual democracy to Big Man rule...from a dynamic, growing empire to a fearful degenerate one — are well underway
Thank you, Bill Bonner, for having the C.O. Jones to call out (and shine an intense spotlight on !) this Administration's growing abuse of power ! Our supercilious President is now using the public purse to amass public ownership in private companies. This is not "Cricket" ! Yes, Mr. President, please continue to reduce government inefficiencies wherever possible ! That task is expected of competent leadership. Using the people's money to satisfy one's insatiably arrogant deal-making addiction is not !!!
Yes, I call it the Secular Trinity...Big Government, Big Corporations and Big Academia. They all embrace the power of "the BIG" so they all support taking the decisions away from the market and moving them to the Elites. And this is not a right vs. left issue...it is in essence a return to "Elites Rule." They only disagreement these political factions have is "which of them will call the shots."
Seems that Bill missed the fact that Trump has been telling everyone for a long time that he wants to build American manufacturing and resource utilization, Rare earths and energy and manufacturing in general. So it seems that your TDS, Bill, gets in the way of your honesty and integrity. Sure someone profits but someone always profits. Do you think any of these companies that grow America will act based upon the system prior to Trump that want to stop all carbon based energy procurement and all mining and anything that might disrupt a NIMBY? Do you think they are going to invest when the Biden admin wanted to stop everything but alternative investments and support of EVs, wind and solar and won't let there be any development in carbon based energy? Get real Bill. Obviously Trump isn't perfect but at least he is heading in some development of America that could actually be beneficial rather than pandering to some radicals who haven't the slightest idea what science is. Seriously your persistence in TDS makes me seriously question your insight.
I note from the comments that many readers want to point the finger at particular politicians, but this is a problem that goes back for at least several decades. When the regulatory agencies were established, it immediately became the goal of the corporations they regulated to get control of said agencies, so as to ensure that the regulations favored them, and largely protected them from new competitors. And how do they get control of these agencies? By buying influence through lobbyists who offer great perks to politicians who play the game.
There is no doubt that Trump is playing this game as well, but he is just following the precedents of the presidents who came before him, of both parties. And it doesn't just apply to presidents - members of Congress from both sides of the aisle are up to their eyeballs in this game. There may be some exceptions, but they tend to not get re-elected unless they wise up and join the game.
Now that Trump has begun remaking the US government in the image of China, one wonders where his worshippers have disappeared to? Their commitment to the principles of Free Markets are so shallow that they are willing to abandon them for Big Man government.
This is not like China. Otherwise a lot of these Republicans would be in jail or worse. There the government controls the corporations so that they basically work for the benefit of the people—e.g., the seamless rail, subway, Didi (Uber-type, except for Didi’s super-low cost), rental electric scooter, rental bike that allows EVERYONE extremely low cost freedom of movement virtually throughout the entire country. The 8 million member Communist Party punishes 80,000 party officials every year for corruption. Our governments—no matter the arty—incentivize corruption AND theft from the general public.
"buying something that is backed by no one." Clearly, at least to me, what all the borrowing is actually "backed" by is the government's unrestricted and unchallenged ability to tax. And before I get bombarded with how impossible that is, rebellion and all, consider that government already has direct control over 40% of GDP via jillions of taxes. The power to tax is the ultimate power. Best always. PM
Don’t we already invest with the government? Isn’t it called taxation? And like a corporation, the stockholders are allowed to reap the rewards not squandered by the Officers or allowed by the Board of Directors. Maybe we should vote for the Directors and Officers of the country as though we were investing in a company’s stock. I’m sure we all do our due diligence when we do investment, right? Right?
This is first cousin to Will Rogers' Depression-Era observation that we should invest in inflation, because that was the only thing that was going up. Per your scenario/recommendation, I take it that it's about the closest thing to insider trading the common man could ever get, right? Best always. PM
Bill, great stuff; however, didn't you leave a couple of names from that list like Nixon and Obama?? Also, gold may never provide a yield but when it becomes revalued to $5,000, $10,000 or more to the dollar, millions of people will find out what is currency and what is money.
Somewhere, maybe in a smoky tavern in Hell, there’s a gold-toed boot just itching to kick the derrieres of Yellen, Bernanke, Bessent, Trump, Biden, and Powell. Each one strutting around with their “fix”.
The Great Moderation, financial repression, hedge-fund treasury schemes, tariffs on kitchen cabinets, all while debt balloons, bonds wobble, and gold becomes the world’s unofficial therapist.
And the absurdity? It ain’t just their scams. It’s that these jokers think they’re gonna bend history with a phone call. Five thousand years of war in the Middle East, empires rising and falling like poker chips, and in 2025 the White House figures: “Eh, ring ‘em up, and tell ‘em to knock it off.” That’s like trying to stop a stampede with a sticky note, or some billionaire’s kid graduating summa cum laude without even knowing where the campus parking lot is.
Five thousand years of blood, and they think diplomacy is a couple of telemarketing calls! What do they say? “Hi, this is America, press one to end your holy war, press two for tariff relief!”
Yeah, right. These people couldn’t balance a checkbook, but we’re supposed to believe they can balance the Fertile Crescent. Meanwhile, the Fed’s playing slot machines with your retirement, and when the reels stop spinning, guess what, you’re the jackpot.
I heard the President’s plan is to call the Middle East and tell them to “cut it out.” Sounds good. I once tried that with my bookie. It didn’t work out, and I lost a finger.
Cycles, folks. Boom, bubble, bust. Freedom, Big Men, corruption. They rename the scam every century, but it’s the same grift, money moves from your pocket to theirs and war keeps the machine oiled, while the masses cheer like it’s progress.

What awaits you in that dark corner of hell... careful projecting who you may meet there....

You forgot to mention crooked Obama
Governments have been corrupt since time began. It would be nice if something was left for us
A good video someone sent is fabulous

A very worthwhile read. We need another like him.
Thomas Jefferson
...Thomas Jefferson waiting in hell?
Likely a few old friends but not Mr. Jefferson... lol
Weird watching our world fall into the pit!

These Chinese bots are annoying, but it's hard to deny that they're often good for a laugh.

... everything in this missive makes so much sense, why not simply invest with the gov't?
Anyone following the gov't lead since last November knows this.
Right?
...what I meant was...follow the gov't lead and invest in the same "trends" with them.
If you have been investing with the gov't "trends" your portfolio knows it in a spectacular way.
Many of the Ai stocks have doubled and tripled...
If you haven't, I would jump aboard now...
We are in an Ai war...
We are in a space war...
We are in an energy war...
We are in a REE war...
We are in a military war...
-
BPR and a lot of media tell us it's over hyped, over P/E'd and over cappexed.
If you look at what Ai affects (everything), and the fact young folks are flocking to the market because they have nowhere else to invest;
I think this a valid argument of sustained market gains... for now.
This is first cousin to Will Rogers' Depression-Era observation that we should invest in inflation, because that was the only thing that was going up. Years ago we studies the cult of the personality as it applied to Mao in China. It seems much the same today.
