Both parties now accept deficits. Both approve of more debt...and of diddling interest rates to make it easier to borrow. Both now offer the voters ‘something for nothing.’
Once again, Bill, gives us an essay that states the obvious, and already known to us, situation in America. He, also, elevates a tin pot politician that grabbed the brass ring in NYC to national prominence. Personally, I don’t feel the NYC success or failure [my bet failure] with this new clown has any significance on my personal financial wellbeing. But, Bill wastes ink on him anyway. Here’s an idea, Bill: Write one essay a week, maybe on Sunday when we can ponder your literary excellence over brunch and coffee. Give the week days to Tom and Dan. They actually offer up advice on ways for us to proceed with saving our wealth. I know, I know, cash, metals and shipping stocks with a bit of bitcoin. However, I get something from Tom’s recommendations every week and I get real knowledge from Dan’s explanations every week. What I get from Bill is a daily diatribe on DJT [not much on Sleepy Joe it seemed] and now maybe some stuff on NYC’s debacle. Kind of like a soap opera in that just watch the Friday episode and catch up on everything that happened that week.
Bill is a perpetual pessimist - obviously leans way left politically. I read Bill's junk posts as I would a comic strip....getting a few laughs at his narcissistic & negative personality spewing forth in everything he writes. Well...all writers of editorial type papers have to be dramatic or the papers just don't sell. I would prefer, though, that he (at least) refer to the President as President Trump....clearly delineating a higher level of importance over Bill's own level of importance in the whole scheme of things. Agree...one essay a week (or less) would be more than enough, as occasional comic relief (good grief!). Kudos to Dan for his articles, with detailed explanations...and Tom's, close behind.
Agree except for the comment that Bill is "way left politically." He's a libertarian as far as I can see, but more importantly, he has a terminal case of TDS. So, no balanced analysis of Trump's policies, only negativity.
OMG!!! I wish I could give your comment 10,0000 likes! Took the words right out of my mouth as I've said pretty much the same thing over and over again, but not as eloquently as you just did!
Thanks for the compliment, John. Don’t chime in too often anymore due to the chain-reactions that come from later comments. This one started a regular s***storm with the last few going into how wonderful China has been for the Chinese! My bad…
Sadly, I fully agree with Bill's conclusions. I was raised on the American dream and that has been fully dashed. Eisenhower warned of the encroachment of the military industrial complex and Jefferson warned that the biggest threat to the republic would be when the citizens figured out how to get their hands into the treasury. Both warnings were not heeded and we are now at the end of empire in America. At least Rome took a tribute from conquered peoples. We simply enrich our oligarchs by rebuilding the countries that we bomb the crap out of, whilst our government goes bankrupt during times of relative peace with foolish spending on stuff we simply don't need at prices we cannot afford to pay. Now, we will all pay through hyperinflation, as the Federal Reserve has no choice but to return interest rates to the zero bound, or below. This will create an economy awash in cash that will yield much pain and suffering for the common man. All I can suggest is take Tom Dyson's advice and hold things of real value, i.e. precious metals, income producing properties, reliable dividend stocks, cash in your safe, etc. Anything denominated in dollars is subject to Weimar Republic, or God knows Zimbabwe style inflation.
None of us get out of this world alive, nor do we take possessions, wealth, or any other thamn ding. I just never figured this applies to countries as well. Haha, joke's on me AGAIN. Took me a long time to realize most people just aren't serious. Best always. PM
I first visited NYC in 1961. My Dad, on a business trip, took me to the automat for breakfast. We walked from the hotel to the automat. We went to Yankee Stadium at NIGHT with no particular concern or consideration. The subway walls and the cars had no defacements. I have made many subsequent visits, and things have never improved. After a while, derelicts relieving themselves in public is no longer shocking. Panhandlers and crooks fencing stolen merchandise no longer surprise. In 1998, I took my own two sons to NYC, and everywhere we went, many single women, all white, would come up to me and each would, in a soft undertone, ask if she could stand next to us. We did not refuse the comfort or the cover. My second son went a year or so ago with his family and said upon return, "Dad, don't go back. Please." Progress, right? Best always. PM
Why do we continue to support the fallacy? Do you mean to tell me our vaunted elected officials are opting us in? Horrors! Perish the thought (and act)! Friends, we're not voting our way out of this. Best always. PM
There's a difference between a fool and being made a fool of by others? Right? Please? Tell me I'm wrong. What's that? There is a difference but the outcome is the same? Oh. Best always. PM
Bill why do you and CNN continue to report "alleged drug boats" are being blown up by the government? We have technology that can see into the boats from the air at a 200 mile distance. Moreover, we are second to Isralies in terms intelligence, with technology and covert ops for which you have no understanding. For God's sake Bill, these drug boats are running three outboard engines skipping across the open ocean at 92 miles per hour. Given those parameters what else can you call them except drug boats.
With regard to your comments on deficit spending, you have for years said the economy can only survive by kicking the can down the road staving off a default indefinitely or until the time when there are no more cans. Yet you continue, and often, demean and exscoreate Trump when he and all of his predecessors spend in the deficit. You have always said "inflate or die". Yet when our leaders inflate you call them names. As you say "money is our beat" so please tells us what needs to be done in order to balance our budget. I am well aware that our political system would never do what it takes, but your readers would very much appreciate your plan to balance our budget.
Balance the budget? "Money" has nothing to with it. The budget (show me one from the last 20 years btw) is a blueprint. We don't bother with that anymore. We just wing it, making it (and the money) up as we go along. You know, dependent on whatever votes or constituency need to be brought "on board". Best always. PM
Bill has no solutions except for broad generalities. But to come to his defense to a degree, and that's saying a lot because I bash him constantly for his inane comments, Bill says "inflate or die" not because he believes it as a policy, but because he believes the government has put us in a position which makes this the only option. The only other option is to drastically reduce government spending (which is most likely politically undoable since we are at a point where too many people believe in handouts and the Democrat party is their advocate) and grow the economy, the latter of which Trump is trying to do. I don't think this will be enough.
Because they are alleged drug boats! Have you seen any proof put out by the Trump administration to show that they’re not! I’m not saying there are no drugs involved at all, but most of those boats couldn’t reach the United States if they tried!
The United States has been after Venezuela for over 20 years with one accusation after another!
Perhaps you should read some of the articles put out by the Gray zone or listen to Judge Napolitano s interviews with Max Blumenthal, who actually knows about the area! It’s mostly not about drugs at all!
Sometimes you get what you vote for. If enough of those NYC policeman accept those 5 thousand dollar offers from other cities and leave, NYC residents may get to experience first hand what a large US city encounters without adequate police protection. They may end up begging for "anyone" to send in the national guard, even Trump. Also, all those women that voted for Muslim leadership in NYC might have studied all Muslim country leadership and see how many women are in leadership positions in those countries. Also, there don't seem to be "any" women walking around in public wearing the latest fashion design outfits in Muslim countries. Obviously, being a man prevents me from understanding NYC women's voting logic. I'm sure that some of you youngsters can enlighten an old fuddy duddy like myself, why those NYC women voted in mass for Muslim control.
Because half of them aren't native-born Americans; they have no knowledge of America, her origins, her charter, her history and have limited or no ability at all to understand, process, and apply that knowledge. The other half are self-delusional who know better but prioritize feelings, appearance, and image over reality. Best always. PM
Interesting how those that mindlessly advocate for open borders seem so unaware of the Federal I&C laws function to vet immigrants, not only for malevolent intent, but for importing human, animal and plant disease.
Laws passed with one eye on the numbers so as to encourage an assimilation conducive to preservation of the American character and culture.
Although, listening to the hard Left and their leadership in "the Squad" and now, NYC Mayor elect Mondavi, this may be a feature rather than a bug.
Bill Maher nailed it when he dubbed the radical Left as 'emotional hemophiliacs". Most women look to provide "caring" under any and all circumstance. There are exceptions though - a Condi Rice for example or a Pam Bondi. Those born with detectable levels of male DNA on the Left are, for the most part, just "moccasin chewers" (from the 80's movie "Little Big Man"). Best to just ignore.
Both Republican and Democrat politicians are complete losers and idiots. CUT government spending by 10% across the board. No department gets a pass. Also, go back to the budget approved in 2018 or earlier. If we continue on the road created by both political parties, those that are able prepare to move to another country. I don’t know exactly when doomsday is coming, BUT it is coming. It’s laughable listening to these politicians.
I am going to cut social security, gov. pensions, medicare and medicaid and then I will start my new campaign based on that 10% cut. New York surely has proven that won't work. Enough talk of budget cutting; it ain't gonna happen. How do you spell screwed?
Our politicians are complete idiots and losers. True, but what's that make us? You know, the ones that put them there? Just asking... This is why Bill quotes the old Chesapeake codgers, "Why vote? It doan make no diff'ence no how." Best always. PM
You are right. It is a copout to blame the politicians. The citizens are to blame and the politicians are just reflections (for the most part) of what the citizens think. Or they are just not paying attention. Probably a little of both. But, pretty soon, not paying attention will not be an option.
And yet, and YET, our side continues to cling to the idea that we can solve this, turn the ship around, recover our lost glory by voting??? WTH? Voting is what got us into this mess! Somewhere along the line, we decided that everyone could vote, and with that, we inherited the problems (and expectations) of the entire population. And with what have we supplemented our population over the last 50 years? Didn't help that whites, by and large, quit having kids. I did my part: I had five, but too many of my friends, associates, and peers had NONE or one. Best always. PM
Well Bill, a sad end to the week but it's hard to disagree. We have rose up faster than the previous five empires and it appears we are going down faster than the previous five!
The last 70 years has surly been a downhill slide.
That is absolutely spot-on. Technology accelerates time. People now have more propaganda (as opposed to information and knowledge) thrown at them in huge heaps. And, most, are busy struggling with life to give it any real thought even if they were aware enough to think it through. Voting is a "joke" since the elites pick what choices are offered. Statesman and statesmanship are antiquated ideas. There are those that go into politics, those that going into finance and corporation structure and the masses are the working stiffs. Like Jim said in Blazing Saddles - “What did you expect? ‘Welcome, Sonny?’ ‘Make yourself at home?’ ‘Marry my daughter?’ You’ve got to remember that these are just simple farmers. These are people of the land. The common clay of the new West. You know—morons.” And, that has worked because of the "exorbitant privilege" America has had and squandered away it in a few short decades. Greed comes with the elites and why they want Power and then Money. Similar to the minorities in NYC - they want things for free. It is human nature. And, it is going to get uglier quicker than anyone knows. It is impossible to imagine how chaotic this is going to be - especially, when supply chains break and shelves are empty. Horrific may turn out to be too kind.
"The last big problem the US government solved was WWII. Since then, from the war in Vietnam to the war on drugs, it’s been one failure after another."
I dunno, the war on "the we the people" has been pretty successful.
The worst decision ever made was sanctioning and confiscating Russia’s reserve assets. It weaponised the $US … and in the process losing its safe haven status. That started WW3 … the rest will be history. That happened under Biden’s watch and the Democrats.
Fortunately for every other country in the world and the world itself, a phoenix has arisen which doesn’t just preach “peace” and “prosperity”, but actually practices both. In the greatest of ironies, China does NOT rejoice in the cruel collapse of Israel and the US, but, inspired in part by US/Flying Tiger support during WWII, is creating a world of REAL “Peace and Prosperity” to which the US will always be invited to join. Trump, the unfortunate heir and literal epitome of US proud-full hate, destruction and murder (27 million foreign dead since WWII), is merely administering the final blows.
How can you call a society which has killed 70 million of its' own citizens, sterilized and enslaved the Uighers, smashed Tibetan society, suppressed freedom in Hong Kong and is now threatening its' neighbors and Taiwan a creator of REAL peace and prosperity? Preposterous assertion Ed!
Ok, Invector, tell us your math: Number of countries invaded or governments overthrown since 1950? China, 1; USA 50+. # combined days with soldiers actively fighting and killing civilians/soldiers on their home soil: China 0/14; USA 100,000++/100,000++. #foreigner casualties: China 0/100 at most?; USA 27,000,000+++ combined both civilian and soldiers according to US statistics.
Oh, forgot, your ilk only believes the sanitized and beautified stools disgorged by US spook agencies and Hollywood. You don’t know how or want to deal with REAL figures. Sorry for misjudging your capabilities.
You threw a fist full of math at me a while back, Ed, and my response to it then is the same as now---I don't give a 💩 about your math.
Nor do I give one about the strawman you crafted and knocked down.
I'm under no obligation to justify America's foreign and domestic screw-ups---if it was up to me, none of them would have happened. I'd be more than happy to stay the hell out of every other country's business, so save your "real figures" for someone who cares.
All that being said, the fact remains that you are an active simp for a murderous, totalitarian, death cult called the Chinese Communist Party; an ongoing regime responsible for the death and misery of more people in the past 100 years than any other entity in world history.
Any person with even a tiny spark of freedom and liberty burning in their soul has no interest in your ChiCom version of peace and prosperity.
I don’t know about the 70 million but do you know that in the United States certain media groups love to say that. But I do know about the 1970’s cultural revolution wherein students persecuted and killed their teachers. I get the impression from talking to survivors and others aware of that absurdity, that almost nothing is more scary to the average Chinese than any other political action that could be taken by the government. Even that was a partial rebellion against the government. Regarding Xinjiang, the Uighur province, I believe that it has the highest growth rate of any province and is now just booming—probably because so many of its inhabitants have learned Chinese and can participate more in its economy and its Muslim majority has apparently conformed to Chinese law requiring ALL religions’ leaders to be appointed or at least approved by the Communist party which favor internal and external peacemaking, not warmaking as preached in practice and reality by both our dominant religions and our War Department.
Ed, I'm always glad for your participation, lest the board become too one-sided. I keep waiting for the day when we agree on something. Today might be the day. Peace in China? What there is of it is enforced by threat of death. Now, that is a high price, but peace is worth it, right? Best always. PM
I don’t know if you’re kidding And I don’t know how much the threat of death makes China so safe, but on several occasions I’ve dropped money on the sidewalk and in each case bystanders have come running after me to return the money. I’m also aware that the Communist party prosecutes about 80,000 of its own members for all kinds of crimes and that sometimes involves capital punishment. Have you ever heard of the Democrat or Republican parties disciplining their own members? Bill has pointed out specific examples of members of the current administration who are making millions by forgiving criminals—even when it directly harms their victims. And I won’t even mention ordinary street crime that’s rampant in the United States and practically nonexistent in China.
Yes, Ed. You just described the book, "1984" by George Orwell. China might not be quite that bad, but it certainly is a version of it. The CCP allows enough freedom in order to get from its citizens what it needs. They are tools to an end and nothing more.
Xavier, normally I agree with what you say, however, I’m at a loss trying to reconcile your statements that I don’t “see reality” and that I “believe the prevailing lies”. The prevailing lie is that the US government has been working for peace and economic prosperity in foreign countries. The reality, as my figures demonstrate, is that we have plotted and slaughtered for the purpose of perpetuating our hegemony by instilling fear throughout the world. Please note those numbers are yet to be disproven even by the most ardent of the many supporters of unlimited violence to be found on this site.
I agree with you; China seems to be the successful moral force in the world. There influence is peaceful but there influence is getting immense because they lead the world in manufacturing and you can’t do that without effective government. They must provide bounty to the people they govern, need voluntary acquiescence to whatever vision the have. The Chinese people have suffered, now they don’t. In another 50 years that could all change, as things have changed in the US. The US is a devastating militaristic force in the world; I hazard to guess the millions we have killed in the last 70 years.
I could not have said it better. There's a reason I've been a Daily Reckoning follower since 1999. There's no other source of such clear thinking. Thanks my friend.
"As for taxing foreigners, the idea was silly from the get-go. Any real businessman tries to sell as much product as he can, reducing his margin to an allowable minimum. If his costs are increased, he has no choice; either he raises his sales prices or gives up the market."
This attempts to frame the debate as though it's Trump against the little business guy. While there certainly exists that small businessman and his coveted profit margin, so too exists a leviathan of foreign government functionaries' intent on layering on their own "costs" at port of export and even prior to that.
Too much of anything (tariffs) is not good but neither is ignoring the blatantly obvious and multiple layers of export taxes, fees and regulatory hurdles levied by the gloved hand of a predatory foreign government. The current arrangement, in total form, that has been targeted by Trump and his savvy band of highly educated and experienced, moneymen.
The irony in the timing of this particular write-up Bill, is that it seeks to portray both political parties as equally guilty of running up the deficits and the national debt at precisely the point in history where democrats are actively seeking to slap a $1.5Tr "band-aid" on their Obamacare debacle, using blackmail in the form of ever-increasing pain on government workers and now, the public at large, in lieu of and in avoidance of the Constitutional process of debate and legislation. We have a SC ruling on whether the Executive has the power to levy tariffs at the same point in time as half of Congress has abdicated its role in legislating anything and everything.
Moral equivocation under these events is even more egregiously wrong-headed than telling "the folks" that a 10% tariff will add 10% inflation to their household budgets. An obstructionist and partisan driven, overly simplistic theory, that has already been proven wrong in marketplace statistics and in only a matter of months. Many of us with more highly attuned "BS meters" based on real-world experience are now waiting for an explanation for this predictive myopia, and those who instead will choose to respond by simply doubling down, are losing all credibility in real-time.
Only you BBB can post a picture of the newly elected communist, then steam roll into how Trump f'ed us and it in the 8 years he has been in power (disconnect eight years mind you) all of the countries ills are his fault. Yes sir, as the Ol' LSO shit for brains said - this is spot on.

Technology enabled the time warp. Best always. PM
You're wasting your time arguing with him, my friend. He's either a Chinese bot or a communist simp.
A ChiCom's idea of "peace and prosperity" bears no resemblance whatsoever to the definition you and I would give it.
But hey, you keep doing you.
OMG that was good.
Most of what I buy comes from China. I am amazed at the inventiveness of the smallest product. Being a producer forces you to innovate.
China is a wonder, its infrastructure superb.
You don’t get what China has without effective leadership.
They produce value products, what the US did. There is a basic morality in that.
I applaud what works and everyone works , in China, for the betterment of each.
What the Chinese leadership has done for China and the Chinese people, over 50 years, is a miracle.
Sadly, we are dependent on China because our government has been a failure; it puts riches in the hands of the few and screws the many.
Why, at this late date, do you erudite believe the prevailing lies. Not seeing reality.
WTF?
