“Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other.” —John Adams

Since the American people (and really, the entire world) no longer understand that God is ultimately in charge, that Divine Providence guides and directs all things, “we” have come to believe that everything must be improved/fixed/redeemed by man alone.

As such, the search for programs and regulations to “correct” the “sins” of human beings. This belief is nothing more than a rebuilding of the Tower of Babel which will result in the same type of destruction that befell the people in the Bible. This time, the destruction comes from the hand of humanity itself, not from God…who will simply allow it out of His Protection of our free will…

Completely disagree!! God doesn’t get involved! He expects man to raise himself up in God’s image and find himself. I argue with good LDS friends whom claim the constitution was divinely influenced and guided. My opinion (as an agnostic at best), it was just smart educated men that knew that people can manage themselves peacefully and prosperously as long as the proper restrictions are put into place restricting the powerful from gaining too much control and by providing equal justice to all and insuring a respect of life, liberty, and property.

What is the origin of these “inalienable” rights enshrined by these really smart and educated guys? Are they only inalienable because we say so? Well, what if we say (or someone else says) these rights are no longer inalienable? Are we just lucky that some really smart guys happened by chance to all be in a room in Philadelphia in 1776? Why did these really smart guys say these rights were endowed by a Creator? Was that just to placate the religious right?

Hey Greg. The founders were mostly devout Christians. Not all. I believe the hand of God was involved with a founding of this country.

Yea, we were lucky, some smart guys were in a room, but not by chance! Your argument that the Devine creator was the “origin” does not hold water. Why? What was the origin of the creator? The universe works as it does, and when examined we can assign some basic laws about how it behaves, it’s called physics, the nature of animal behavior is the same, as humans we just have the ability to reason a bit better and regulate ourselves; go watch some David Attenborough describing the animal behavior as some animal is getting torn apart for dinner by another. So, we humans have determined some basic laws to make life better, kinda like killing off all the wolves so our kids can walk unmolested in the forest. But what this means is that us humans have to keep reaffirming these basic laws, otherwise, they degenerate into eat or be eaten. Don’t see God getting involved, even if he is present and watching. (I had to come back and edit this and delete a last comment that was way too sarcastic. Deleted it. I respect your beliefs! After all, I don't know the truth and nor claim to. Wes)

Congress!! That’s where we desperately need term limits

Expand full comment
Spiff's avatar

We have term limits every two years.

I voted against my CONgressman who cares more about a foreign nation than the invasion of our country by the millions.

But he won the primary with over 80% of the vote.

The politicians are not the problem.

The people are getting what they deserve.

I agree, but at least with term limits the pricks would have to sit out at least one term and go back and live with the people they have been screwing

Why is it always the liberals who propose changing a constitution that has made us a great country? Why not change the leadership that is continuing to regulate and destroy the integrity of our country.

Paul Murray's avatar

The Constitution is being and has been ignored by those in charge, so why bother changing it? In fact, leave it alone and in place. That way you can give the illusion that everything is still "the same" and "OK".

Change the leadership? What leadership? The Insiders are faceless and clever. The mechanism provided to us, voting, produces sameness, not change. That's what the Insiders hope we never figure out. Best always. PM

I find it distressing that apparently half of the USA thinks the 5-perzon break-in at Watergate wasa huge threat to democracy but shrugs off the far more incideous use of the FBI to spy on political opponents and to cover up the truth about Hunter Biden's laptop and "the Big Guy's" corruption of thevice presidency for financial gain, which itself may explain why $billions and nearly a million lives were squandered on Ukraine. Not to mention censoring 200 doctors whose thousands of patients took hydroxychloroquine and avoided C-19 almost entirely.

The "President" has been on the beach in Delaware now for 16 days running. The Vice President is out holding her own coming out party, courtesy of the Insiders. Venezuelans hold forth in Aurora, CO, and the so-called authorities tell us it's "isolated" or "contained", when, in reality, they either like it or are being told to "stand down", recalling the Ferguson, MO mess of 10 years ago. We are certainly now no longer "self-governed", if we ever were. The system no longer serves but is to be served. It all ends in full-bore communism, but not to worry: this time it will be implemented correctly (as it always is). We are now so feckless I doubt whether we can muster the effort for war. Happy Labor Day, y'all. Best always. PM

More brilliant strategy from the leftist who controls the entire West. As the west falls into bankruptcy over the next two years, all the blame will go on those who sit in power, and the majority of the idiots will blame the right for the left’s destruction. Trump will be sitting in the hot seat and it will be so entertaining to watch our media continue to rip him to shreds. Just hope he’s strong enough, and has enough backing from the 100 million who will vote for him to make the necessary changes needed, starting with the arrest and prosecution of most of the leftist heads in control…civil war may follow🤔

As with the DJT prosecutions, they would not have entered into those without firm knowledge of the outcome. I believe the same with Comrade Kamala: they would not run her if they weren't sure of her success. The DJT presidency was an unforeseen eventuality to which their response was "Never again." Nothing that has transpired since has dissuaded me. Best always. PM

It is obvious that the constitutional reforms proposed in the article published in the NY Times would be a disaster for the country. I live in Washington State which is a microcosm of the country. The western half of the state has the large urban population centers around Puget Sound and the Eastern half on the East side of the Cascade Mountains is rural. People on the west side of the state want state government to enact more regulations such as rent control, and more services such as free or subsidized housing. People on the East side want to be as independent from state government as possible. For almost 40 years Washington State has been run by progressives and it has become a much less desirable place to live with urban decay (large portions of downtown Seattle are now vacant

or boarded up because of rampant crime. Burglary and shoplifting go unpunished, and the number of police has been cut over the last few years. Under the constitution the rural states act as a check on the large population state's ability to grow government even larger with new and bigger social spending programs.

When you can't get your way under the old rules, change the rule book. Actually, it amazes me constantly how a very small group of mostly young men were able in a very few words to create the guidelines for a country that has done moderately well for about a quarter of a millenium.
