The terrible irony here is that if the GOP were to radically balance the budget, the job losses would be horrendous, and the folks across the U.S. would backlash, putting the Dems back in power across the board, And the Dems would MORE than reverse all the cutting, not to mention other radical horrors, such as reopening the border, turning 20M third-world illegal alien peasants into permanent Dem voters, shutting down free speech on line, slapping thousands more regs on business, trying to take away guns from law-abiding citizens, pushing trans men on women athletes in locker rooms and sports, etc., etc. So what good would the GOP do the American people by committing electoral suicide via radical budget balancing?
So I think this is why Bill only drones on weekly about how horrible the GOP and Dems are about not balancing the budget, then stops right there, not telling folks the rest of the story; i.e., the horrible aftermath of radical budget balancing.
It has to be done gradually over a couple of decades, which is highly unlikely; and, thus we are probably well beyond the point of no return. Hyper-inflation at some point. But Bill needs to provide a realistic analysis; not this virtue-signaling, fantasy-land nonsense. People are flawed human beings, not just transactions on a ledger.
Well, at this rate we’ll be getting through the Fourth Turning a lot faster. But then, what will the First Turning look like? A high for freedom lovers or tyrants? Most likely something in-between. Either way, we can take comfort in knowing that while we're enjoying the new high, we'll be busy building a brand-new disaster for future generations. I wish there was a cycle for clear thinking… that kept getting better.
Bill's disconcerting but convincing remark that the USA's debt is so massive that it can be never paid makes me wonder why would anyone buy T-bills.
I can't help but wonder what happens if they don't, or even if they just meaningfully reduce their purchases?
And desperate is how I interpret the dominoes whereby lending money to Japan (buying their bonds) props up their currency to keep it from selling our bonds that would increase the cost of our debt.
If this and other financial artifices stop working, then maybe the USG will have no choice but to actually start paying down our nation's debt; not just its interest.

Well after reading Bill piece today and reading through all the comments as of 13:01 EST, I see no option but to stay LARGE in cash and MUCH larger in that old useless relic, Gold! I believe somewhere down the road, and not to far, our treasury leader will announce that the US is holding gold at "Mark to Market", not $42.22 which it is currently held on the books. This will make our cash holdings MUCH higher and give the deep state more cash on the books to play with. With all the stupid things we've seen to date, I believe this will be the GRAND event our our lifetimes!

More cash = more inflation. Cash will be best for the option of transacting into something more valuable, not holding for too long; timing will be paramount. Get your gold before any “mark to market”.
First your right about the cash. Second, the gold is very OLD. I haven't bought anything new in ten years, no need to. When I cash some of it out, I'll be able to eat well for the next 20 years....that will be the end of my time in this world. I always had confidence in the governments ability to destroy our currency. Plus a little mental health money for the grand kids. Nice way to exit this life.
You may be aware that the central banks have been buying gold like there's no tomorrow for several years. Clearly they know something us little people don't.....stay tuned.

Agreed. Same here but no offspring, favorite charities for what I don’t spend. My most worrisome thoughts are of the exit plan, hoping the AI Deep State doesn’t pillage and plunder my years of hard work and savings before the charities acquire it on my passing. My rural neighborhood suddenly has 4 new Flock cameras in areas infrequently traveled (relative to 2 nearby interstates where I have found no cameras, so far), doesn’t make sense so obviously I don’t understand what’s really happening.
I do already, just can’t itemize on federal and no state taxes (its just what happens when you owe nothing). Will do QCD’s when RMDs required.

Isn’t there a deeper time-horizon problem here? Democratic governments have strong incentives to deliver benefits within the current electoral cycle while pushing part of the costs—debt, unfunded commitments, and underinvestment—onto future governments and generations.
If so, is the trajectory you describe specifically an American problem, or a long-term tendency of democracy itself once the institutional constraints on borrowing and spending begin to erode?
