I don't understand what has happened to women during my lifetime. When I was young, it seemed to me that young women were primarily interested in getting married and having a family. Three children was ideal. Today, so many young women are mainly interested in ensuring they can get an abortion on demand, or transitioning into a man.
After 5,000 plus years of selfishness, people are losing their vitality. Adam was at least 12 feet tall, and his brain electrical activity was 100 times more than people today.

The 'human race' is dying, and no amount of technology can change that.
Regarding a recession, remember that one of the components of the GDP is government spending, no joke! So big increases in government spending can keep the GDP from going negative but is that really economic activity?
They are broke, but they havenβt run out of (printed) money yet. Since the debt ceiling deal was reached the federal debt has increased by $985 Billion - just in the past month! The spending is beyond out of control, but it will come to an end. The entire US economy may crash concurrently or nearly so. They have created a fake and criminal economy and have killed much of the productive capacity that powered us out of recessions in decades past. This is going to be very ugly. Unfortunately there is no other recourse.
I gave up reading Newsweek and Time decades ago. Too expensive and too leftist. I have been reading The Economist, but now it is becoming costly (around $450 for two years) and is drifting leftward. So good by to it. By "average" does Newsweek mean "median", "mode", or "mean"? There are big differences in these three "averages".
Bill doesn't need another house, but he is a sucker for a fix-it-up project. Since I have started reading his writing some twenty years ago, he has written about fixing up places in Maryland, France, Argentina, and Ireland. And I may be missing one or two. If that's what keeps him excited about life, then I recommend that he go for it!
Having spent the 4th of July weekend in New England, which is a good eight hours from my domicile, I can faithfully report that all those missing people Bill highlighted must be on Highway 95, the road I took to drive to/from New England. I had to break speed limits most of the time to stay in the pack. Too many people; too many trucks too. Mama Mia!

just spent a week in London visiting my daughter who is working there. My wife booked the accommodation and my daughter the restaurants ... so now Iβm also keen to know about those free houses in Sicily!!

If you could work remotely, what good is a free house if you don't have a thriving community and businesses and your family and friends live thousands of miles away, not to mention the cost of renovation and the limited availability of skilled tradesmen? And I'm sure the view of Mount Etna is beautiful until it starts erupting.
For someone like me who has lived in large cities away from family my entire life, living 5 or 6 hours away by plane in a different direction is no big deal. Also, with a small villa in Italy, I'll likely have more family/friends visitng than with my small apartment in Los Angeles. LOL

Absolutely and I bet there are many in the U.S. with Italian roots (like me) who would strongly consider this a very fine overseas retirement option.
