Tariffs are a tax, which is bad, but they are also a bit of a head fake. How so? The people whom the tariffs are nominally protecting, meaning US industries nominally, and US consumers actually, are the ones who PAY the tariff. China, Mehico, and Canada are not ponying up at the customs house to get into the country. We, who would buy demanding the foreign goods, are paying the upcharge for the privilege of having access to the products we demand. The government portrays this situation as "levelling the playing field" and/or "protecting" US firms from "unfair" competition.

There is a difference with tariffs: they can come and go as desired. Other taxes are not so flexible; they are established by law (and its cumbersome process), not decree. Therefore, the tariffs can be a useful tool either to make a point or to buy some time for a specific purpose. In this case, the specific purpose is to show the "unfair" competitor that the market he takes for granted can go away at anytime. The US economy and enormous consumer market are still the straw that stirs the world economic drink. Can exporters afford a sudden 25% reduction in exposure to that market? We'll find out. The tariffs can go as quickly as they come. They can increase or decrease as needed. Not so with income taxes, property taxes, intangible taxes, use taxes, excise taxes, sales taxes, corporate (production) taxes, and all the other loving assessments with which our government saddles us. They're structural and nearly impossible to undo, as all of us learn very well, very quickly.

I hate taxes. They are the physical manifestation of government. Still, in this case, in this political game of chicken, I'm interested to see where it leads. This time, I might actually benefit from my "contribution". Best always. PM

Excellent, Paul. THIS is the very real flip side of Tariffs and what actually gives them true Power for the one instituting them. It's also the part that Bonner refuses to even slightly acknowledge...

Yes Steve, it’s not so much a philosophical war due to the zero logic and lack of common sense on the left, but a very uncivil war due to the extreme mental illness in control of the Democratic Party. The democrats are officially the party of mental illness and will continue to be so until we reopen the mental institutions that should have never been shut down. Also need to address the causes of these mental disorders and stop putting these people in positions of authority due to DEI nonsense.

I spent 30 years in the machine tool business and witnessed first hand the stupidity and greed of decisions made to move manufacturing offshore. There was a time where we made everything under the sun in house and its time we returned this to America. Trumps methods are the first step in its revival. Give it a chance.

Weirdly, deficit spending counts towards GDP. So if Musk is successful in reducing the deficit, which I think Bill would like, GDP goes down, for which Bill will blame Trump. This is akin to saying that if we stop the patient's bleeding, we won't need as many units of blood to keep him going, and that's bad for the economy.

Secondly, there is a big dot here that Bill doesn't seem to want connect. What if, just maybe, tariff's are initially a tax to help close the budget gap, but also to incentivize reshoring, and also as a first step in a transition from income and wealth taxes to consumption taxes?

Trump is not a typical negotiator. Most people say "I want this" and the other party says "I'll agree to that if you will do this for me". Trump hits you between the eyes with a 2x4, and the other party says "What is it you want?? Whatever it is, I'll do it!!!"

I'm glad you at least mentioned that other countries cruelly use tariffs to also tax their citizens. It's not unique to Trump's selfish nature. Many of Trump's tariffs are reciprocal, leveling the trading space with some countries. Other tariffs are intended to change behavior on boarder security. But what Bill fails to mention (because of TDS) is the TRILLIONS in commitments to build factories and produce American jobs that have ben exported over the decades under the Globalists. Actual, good-paying manufacturing jobs that certainly will not be held by the investment class but by working-class Americans invigorating the base. If you're going to rip someone's actions at least do a fair job of covering the expected outcomes. 1.7 Trillion in commitments so far after only 6 weeks! Some of it is because of tariffs (hello Honda and Apple). Some of it because we're reducing regulation and opening our country back up to manufacturing. Press pause on the doom, Bill, and get some help for your very obvious TDS.

Wondering if tariffs are good or bad, whether there is gold in Fort Knox, whether Musk should be deported, whether the Gulf should be renamed, or even if Representative Green is an idiot (well, that seems to be beyond question) are just distractions. The US$ and the fiat currencies worldwide are going to blow up and with it the credit/derivatives bubble. All the other comments - reshoring, close the gap, cut government waste.......just continuing nonsense. The Progressive Fascist Nihilist Democrat Horde don't expect you to pay for it. It's all for FREE!!! They want you to feel indebted to the government, unable to do anything on your own (with the help of severe all-encompassing regulations), so they can control you. An independently thinking and productive person is a threat to them because this person doesn't need their help, hence why they also want to limit free speech in addition to the regulations. Their policy is state control (fascism), and the destruction of productive effort which includes the need for energy (nihilism).

" Economic dominance is not determined by who best and efficiently presses out your flip flop from a piece of sponge roll. Nor, the worker snaps together an automobile in an "assembly plant." Economic dominance goes to those who produce the most energy, the most steel, the most ships. Heavy, heavy industry with sound governance of the supply chain is the foundation upon which any economy is built. The United States ran its heavy industries off. Environmental regulation, taxation and the lure of low labor cost which nowadays is a small part of production cost was our failing. It's time we bring our capital, financial and intellectual back.

Like most of the naysayers Bill you ignore the immediate results of the threat of tariffs. Businesses are onshoring manufacturing in these United States. There are more to come in the trillions of dollars of investment that will bring high paying jobs to Americans.

You also seem to ignore the outrageous tariffs other countries are imposing on our goods making it near impossible for American manufacturers to compete in the global marketplace. Imposing reciprocal tariffs on them is fair. Any ensuing "trade war" will be short lived for the simple reason we have more staying power that our "trade partners" and they will have no choice but to at the minimum meet us half way.

Your "free trade" screed is an empty one. In reality there is no such thing as free trade, there never was and there never will be because governments can't resist interfering.

We have provided the world a police force for free since 1945. Meanwhile they have been buggering us with exorbitant tariffs. It's time they started paying for that police force and if they bitch about it we need to triple whatever tariffs we are imposing on them.

Aren't you supposed to be some kind of economic/financial gee whiz kid? I don't see it.
