The US has become a banana republic without the bananas. The practical importance: shouldn’t its capital assets — its stocks and bonds, primarily — be marked down to banana republic levels?
I hadn't thought about America in those terms. A Banana Republic without the bananas. Giving that some ponder, it does seem we are heading there like we are racing on the Utah Salt Flats. Hell bent for leather. And, the lunatics sitting in Washington and state capitals are sure focused on getting us there. And, how to turn the ship of state.......that is a waste of time. There is no "turning" ahead. The seawall is dead ahead and those delusional clowns in Washington have given the "All Ahead Flank" command to ol' Gridley. Some suggest - such as ol' Bill has done - is to have a second residence/citizenship elsewhere along with some non-credit assets such as precious metals. If you think this is all hogwash......one morning you are going to be stunned in the worst possible way with no exit in sight.
"The 2% inflation target, for example, is basically a license for the feds to depreciate the nation’s currency"
While true, this statement is incomplete, likely from restriction and the need to stay on task, but the license is also an admission that the license is officially in place, because they INTEND to steal. And from whom are they stealing? From the ones who have and use the money! Why, that would be the people! Here's the naked truth: the scam sounds moderate, benign, and reasonable. What's 2%, right? Well, when you open the drawer and get out the old Rule of 72, you can see what 2% is. It's 72/2 or 36. 36 is how many years it takes at a the measly, moderate, reasonable 2% for prices to double, or, put another way, for the money to lose HALF ITS VALUE. It's pernicious, and it's happening under the aegis, approval, and sanction of the government. Somehow, it always gets back to harm coming from government, Big Man-government, or no. Best always. PM
Perhaps Ayn Rand said it best. As the Constitution stipulated the separation of church and state, they were remiss for not also stipulating the separation of the economy and the state.
To be fair, they defined carefully what the .gov was allowed to do, and even precisely what out money was to be. I'm not sure we can fault them for our failure to follow those instructions.
Of the relatively few oversights on the part of the Founding Fathers, perhaps the most egregious is what I call "Loss of Consensus". I guess it never occurred to them that half the country could get so far away from the American Ideal of liberty and individual rights via intentionally restricted government to produce an equal split in the electorate and bring the whole thamn ding to a screeching halt. Best always. PM
Hi Paul. Doug Casey had a good article yesterday where he touched on this:
“But now America is drawing the wrong kind of people. They’re not people who necessarily want freedom. Some do, of course. But many are drawn to the massive welfare benefits, free medical care, and free schooling.
Past migrants may have been dirt poor and ignorant, but they had to make their own way. The State didn’t subsidize them; it gave them absolutely nothing. But that’s not the case today. The character of America has changed, and so have the kind of people who want to migrate here. They don’t want to accept American values. They want to maintain their Somali, Afghan, or Haitian values. Most won’t become Americans; they’ll become United Statesers. America, a republic sharing a common culture, is being washed away and replaced by the US, a multicultural domestic empire.
America used to be totally unique, but now the US is just another nation-state like all the others.”
There is nothing about church and state in the constitution. It simply says that the government cannot establish a church In the name and endorsed by the government. The current Separation of church and state is being used to say there shall be no church. No ten commandments. No Bible. The Koran. That's pretty good for now....
Billy, you just can't tell the difference between a 'strongman' and a Strong leader trying to bring back some civility to civilization. You're blind as a bat Billy, but hey, at least you're happy in that.
"All the strong obey when a strong man shows them the way." (Oscar Hammerstein, II, 1927, from the operetta, "New Moon", music Sigmund Romberg, lyrics Hammerstein, the song, "Stout-Hearted Men", being popularized by one of America's finest-ever singers, Nelson Eddy)
The fundamental problem is that the old money, super-wealthy who control global finances and pull the strings behind the scenes don't want everyone else to be "wealthy"; they want this planet all to themselves. I posted this video link on Dyson's stack:
Does anyone have a problem with Donnie's promised $2,000 stimi check, our tariff bonus! But the Federal Deficit for October was $219,000,000,000! Donnie's going to borrow more money which will stimulate more inflation.
If you cannot bring yourself to call him "the President," you might at least consider calling him "Mr. Trump." Calling him "Donnie" only reflects badly on the person doing it. And BTW, I would say the same thing regarding President Biden.
Hey Flier. I've always had a place in my heart for total disrespect for connected draft dodgers who later decided they like war - whether it's Baby Bush, Donnie, Sleepy Joe, Cheney, Bolton, Clinton, etc. Just think, some unlucky poor or working class peon had to go in their place. So in my book Trump will always be Donnie or the Orange Jesus or Jeffrey Epstein's good buddy.
“One of the closest allies of the U.S., the U.K. has reportedly suspended sharing some intelligence with the Pentagon due to concern over the boat strikes in the Caribbean, according to CNN.
The U.K does not want to be complicit in U.S. military strikes and believes the attacks are illegal, a source familiar with the situation is cited as telling the publication.” Time
I guess the actions one takes might depend on whose figurative ox is being gored. Let the UK distance itself. That way, the Islamics will always have somewhere to go. Best always. PM
Since you mention Islamics did you see the pretty foto if Donnie with Ahmed al-Sharaa the current "president" of Syria and former Al-Queda leader. The FBI once had a $10 million reward for his capture. Now he's buddy buddy with Donnie. He went from headchopper to head of state, quite a career move.
"He" meaning Donnie or al-Sharaa? Remember now, in their culture, head-chopping is virtuous. If I had my way, no American politician would be associating with al-Sharaa or any other middle eastern potentate. They'll be "buddies", as you say, for as long as it suits whatever the immediate purpose is. Do I like it? No. Is it (meaning these unpleasant associations)( likely a fact of life, past, now, and ongoing? I'd have to say (sorrowfully) "yes". Would you like me to condemn Donnie specifically for this and generally for everything he does? If so, I will disappoint you. I have, however, already conceded that I don't like it, as I don't like a lot about Donnie. What I do like about Donnie is that he fought the corrupt Democrat "Party" singlehandedly, while the other Repubs stood around wringing their hands. Is that a valid reason to support him? For me, yes. Best always. PM
In their culture? How much of jihadi terrorism is a direct result of US and Israel involvement in the Mideast? Begin with Operation Cyclone and the CIA organizing the original Al-Queda to draw the USSR into a debilitating war in Afghanistan. NuttyYahoo himself admitted to funding Hamas in order to keep the Palestinians divided. Israel also provided treatment for ISIS fighters wounded during the civil war in Syria. And now we're welcoming the former head of Al-Nusra into the White House. Here's some info on our new friend's group: Documented incidents include:
Attacks on Christian villages and communities
Kidnappings of clergy and civilians, including the abduction of nuns and bishops
Destruction of churches and religious sites
Forcing Christians to pay jizya (a tax on non-Muslims) or leave areas under their control.
How much jihadi terrorism is a direct result? I don't know. I do know, from what I've been able to see and read over the years, Islam has a known violent side to their, um, religion for quite some time, going back to around 600-700 AD, or as some say, CE. Hence my remark about Arab history of violence. Yes, Hamas did come back to bite ol' Netanyahu in the arse. I bet but can't prove, there were people at the time who counselled him not to do it! Marxists aren't going to like sharing space with Islam, and Islam, according to doctrine, sees Marxism for what it is, godless, the worst possible crime in Islam, denying God, but for the nonce, their common goal of destruction of the USA and the idea of America makes them strange bedfellows, but bedfellows nonetheless. I enjoy our interaction. I enjoy our agreements, too. Thank you for not indulging in personalization. Best always. PM
Final question for the day, Paul. When you mention God I'm reminded of the Dylan song - You don't count the dead with God on your side. When we talk about terrorism just think of the terrorism the CIA has unleashed since their inception. Examples like a coup in Guatemala that led to a genocide of the indigenous people there or our overthrow of Gadaffi in Libya - Obama managed to bring slavery back there and the nation, which had the highest living standard in Africa is in ruins, the coup in Iran replacing a democratically elected president with a dictator which eventually resulted the Ayatollah taking power. And so it goes.
I'm not religious, Paul, but I think it's a stretch to claim Arabs (Islamists) were the only ones being violent since 600 AD, as you seem to imply. I thought it was Christian Europe that instigated the crusades? Let alone all the European wars carried out between all the various States since then. Religioius "heretics" burned at the stake, the Spanish inquisition, catholics v protestants??
There is an old saying- Do not believe anything that You hear and only believe half of what You see. There is always a sinister thing happening behind the scene. So sad is this world that We live in.
The elites are fast turning this country into the have's and the have not's, with no middle class. The result is the rise of socialism. History is full of examples of elites gaining most of the wealth, power and control in a nation, and then thinking they are safe and untouchable. History also shows that things don't always work out as planned. An example is France. The king and queen thought the same but it ended up costing them their heads, and those "have nots" only had knives and pitchforks. Let's pray it doesn't come to that in this country, if and when socialism is tried to be implemented in the entire US.
The middle class has been on the hamster wheel for a long time now, Kenneth, run faster or fall off, and most are falling off. It was always the plan; our skills are neither appreciated or needed.
Beyond brilliant in stating our basic problem. All Trump had to do was to keep his promise to stop the wars and build the economy. Instead he tied himself (and the rest of us) up in his (our?) petty prejudices against ALL immigrants and the one super-implementer of US-invented and forever -inspired free enterprise, China.
Yes, the job (re-creating individual responsibility, enterprise and achievement against Wall Street, Democrat Party and government wealth concentration) was difficult, but we believed in his words, plan and cleverness. Instead, he created international distrust and warmongering plus a domestic criminal enterprise to benefit himself and his friends. Who? What? Now?
So, now, NYC, the face of capitalism and America, is majority-populated by 3rd-world "immigrants" who have no real knowledge and understanding of America, what she is, or how she came to be, and that demographic falls for the pigeon-drop scheme of something for nothing, and their pandering pimp, Mamdani, and all because of our "petty prejudices"? Hardly. We welcomed Albert Einstein, and Julius Seligmann Oppenheimer, father of J. Robert Oppenheimer, and both were (gasp!) German Jews. Try again. Best always. PM
I can't believe I forgot to include "Best always." I often agree with you Paul, and sometimes not, but I always enjoy the way you make thoughtful comments and keep things respectful.
Paul, great observation of which I would hope we’re all aware. We also know every Jewish immigrant was not an Einstein. And there were people then (like you, today) who opposed even their immigration. And then you jump to conclusions about the new mayor even before he walks into his office!! One thing even YOU can’t deny is the total off-the-table pimping of Trump for convicted criminals who owe lots of money to their victims.
For me to deny PDJT's inconsistencies would be to make myself look foolish, but at least I'm self-aware in that regard, and so I don't do it. You might enjoy my response to Cartero Atomico today, as he tries to pin me to the figurative wall on the Donald's vagaries. Fact: I don't oppose immigration. To characterize my position in that manner is inaccurate. I do oppose unrestricted, uncontrolled immigration, especially in those cases where it is apparent the immigrants are bringing few talents and abilities with which to contribute, and who are innately possessed of limited ability to understand our country, our system, and our culture. If that makes me the bad guy, then I'm the bad guy. Fortunately for those who think I am bad, unhelpful, obstructive, unfair, prejudiced, biased, bigotted, they can comfort themselves with the fact that at 73, my time, thoughts, and opinions will relatively soon be irrelevant. Their opinion of me will not make me alter my opinion or belief. So far as my "dissing" Mamdani, before he even starts, I did the same thing with Clinton, Obama and Biden, and though you might think that bad, I think it's a 50-50 deal with regard to general opinion. Funny how that mirrors the general political state in this "country" today, isn't it? I don't have time, and it's not appropriate for me to co-opt this space to expound on Mamdani's total unsuitability for the job to which he has been elevated, and the danger he constitutes to America. By the way, please refrain from pesonalizing the argument with an italicized "YOU". For me, this forum is a space for honest, respectful discussion. Personalization is out of bounds: It's classless, and I expect better from you and all of us. Best always. PM
I never have claimed to have “class”, but will consider your suggestion—carefully considered as all of your comment. Your very premature judgement of a newly elected official, despite your lenghly justification, is even more disturbing than before. With such “insight”, why didn’t you warn us about Trump. Your “ability” to predict the future contributions of individual immigrants and their off-spring is equally questionable. I don’t think that the US government was administering IQ tests when your 2 very selected examples were admitted to the USA. I don’t think anyone, especially one with racist views, can make such predictions.
Here's something I learned in nearly 50 years of marriage. I always get in the last word: I say, "OK". I'll be blissful in my racist ignorance. You can be blessed in your superiority. It's not easy, I know, but you'll find a way. You've had tons of experience. Best always. PM
Politics is small ball. They want you to keep fixating on their scripted political theater while they continue draining the treasuries and robbing you blind.
Whether it's Trump, Biden, Obomber or Baby Bush they are war criminals in my book and do not warrant our respect. If a man who's diligently working to insure the Epstein blackmail operation files are not released, helping to cover up for pedos, deserves respect you are welcome to give it to him.
Yes, economics is the modern version of astrology and MMT is the mathematical lipstick on the pig of official process of using two crooked sets of weights to fudge the accounting of transactions in the official unit of exchange, the USD, with the predictable result: relentless erosion of its purchasing power So our polity rushes towards its fiscal singularity as prescient shorters prepare to Soros' calling UK's bluff on the soundness of the pound Sterling. No surprise that the best politicians stuck with this situation can offer is emulating Professional Wrestling trash talk as substitute for viable policies, which they know their constituencies will reject as too harsh.
I for one block out negativity. Seems like Bill you are focused only on the worst parts of our great country. Please look for something positive before you get much older. We all are in this together. I for one have found solutions the good old fashion way. Hard work whether it’s one or two jobs. Save at least 20% by paying myself first. Then tithe 10%. Give God all the honor & glory. The more I give the more I inspire others to give. And the more I receive from my Creator. Then always be on the look out for wealth building opportunities. It’s called “Acres of Diamonds.” I am sure you have heard of it and I hope you have or will read it. My children and grandchildren and great grand children are on the same path I set in motion some 67 years ago. The world will come to an end and I for one am grateful I will live in the USA till I pass away. God bless America ❤️🤍💙🇺🇸
You give Banana Republic a bad name. The banana plantations of Central America were a worthy achievement, an American achievement, a wonder of profound accomplishment. It amazed me. Somewhat like Schwabs Bethlehem Steel, Sparrows Point, MD, self contained corporate city. Infrastructure for everyone. Transforming. All from a jungle .
Damn Bill, you go on and on about the strongman thing now that Trump is president, but didn’t Biden write tons of executive orders too. I used to hit that “share” button quite a bit but not so much lately.
I had a PhD Chemical Engineer talk with me about modeling once... "first, assume the horse is a sphere,..."
Also, Biden (as usual) didn't know what he was talking about. Inflation going down means prices go up less rapidly. For prices to go down, that would be DEflation...
I hadn't thought about America in those terms. A Banana Republic without the bananas. Giving that some ponder, it does seem we are heading there like we are racing on the Utah Salt Flats.
PM
You and I both know that Mamdani is a communist, Paul.
Little wonder that Ed would take offense at your mild criticism.
All this BPR rampage and not a single reference to Newsom.
We all could use a little Jesus.
